My First Paid Job
Looking backward from 2009-11-29.
Somewhere around the middle of November, 1972, during my sixth grade year, I got hired as a pot washer in the WPSBC main building kitchen. I worked all three meals for about a half-hour each. Initially, my job was to rinse and dry the empty pans that other boys had retrieved from the various dining rooms, emptied, and washed.
The work paid a dollar per week which actually, was quite a step up from the weekly allowance of a quarter that comprised my total income before this new position. I picked up my pay, in cash, each Friday from one of the secretaries in the front hall, though I don’t remember right now which one it was. One did not receive his pay as a check until he acquired some seniority. Greenbacks for the green, as it was.
