1978: Year in Review

Looking backward from 2009-12-19.

Memorable Events

  • 1978-01: Fell in love for a second time with [First Love], and for the rest of my 11th grade year, I campaigned to “win” her love though I never succeeded.  The first half of 1978 was my first intensely love-sick time.  I was obsessed.  Fantasies of [First Love] colored my every experience from January through June.
  • 1978-03: I visited Seven Springs ski resort for the first time, to attend my first Key Club convention. I’d also get to passionately kiss [First Love] on the first time, on the balcony of my room on Saturday night.
  • 1978-06: I was grateful that eleventh grade was done because I was tired of feeling the intense pain of [First Love]‘s repeated and relentless rejections.  I knew that a few weeks away from her would cure my upset stomach, which it did, at least for the rest of 1978 anyhow.
  • 1978-06: Worked the first hay cutting at Oswald’s farm in Bellwood, PA, bailing hay.  This was, per hour, my highest paid job to date, at $2 per hour.
  • 1978-o7: I took my Pioneer SX-1000-TW receiver up to Spring Lake, where several friends and me blasted it and unfortunately, burned it out. However, an engineer at KDKA radio repaired it for me in 1979 and the stereo still works today.
  • 1978-08: Worked the second cutting at Oswald’s farm.  This really taxed me physically, as the weather was hotter than in the first cutting.
  • 1978-09: I took over the technical lead role of our school’s AM radio station, WPSB AM 1200.
  • 1978-10: I also assumed the responsibility of providing the music at the WPSBC school dances with various sororities from the University of Pittsburgh.  Since I had access to the music in the WPSB AM 1200 radio station library, I was able to put together some very popular dance tapes of the current disco and adult contemporary hits, which we’d then play at the events.
  • Sept: Secured an internship at KDKA radio 1020 in Pittsburgh, which I worked each Thursday morning throughout my senior year.
  • 1978-10: [First Love] invited me to her new apartment, where she cooked me a spaghetti dinner.  However, we had to throw out the first attempt, when she inadvertently dumped a whole bottle of Annice seed into the sauce.
  • 1978-11: Met a great friend, who my sister Mary Ann actually discovered and dated for a time.  Then, sister Christine dated his brother as well.
  • 1978-11: Prepared and sold Christmas Trees at WPSBC
  • 1978-12: Went on my first double date with that great friend’s sister, the great friend, and sister Mary Ann.  We all liked that song by Dr. Hook:  Sharing The Night Together.
  • 1978-12: I decorated my bedroom with multi-colored C7 Christmas lights; I ran them around edge of the ceiling.
  • 1978-12: Mom and Dad purchased for me a Realistic AM & FM portable radio that really sounded great, and for the next three years, I learned most of the top 40 music through this cool radio.
