Abstaining from Caffeine

Sunday, October 17th, 1999

Dear [Lynn],

Ah, thank you. I do endeavor to be organized. It keeps life’s many stresses at bay.

Avoiding coffee, tea, pop, and hot chocolate took much soul searching, and getting used to not having them around. But I feel so much better without them. Took years to make it happen.

Why did you have to give up coffee for the year that you did?

Your kitchen sounds like a pleasant place in which to enjoy breakfast, especially with the sun shining in.

Do you like preparing meals with a date? I just love those togetherness kinds of activities.

Can you see the ocean from your home?

Well, gotta go for now. Talk to you soon.

Dear Lynn: 1999-10-17

Dear [Lynn],

Sounds relaxing up there on the island where you live. Lots of nice pictures there, waiting to be taken. Do you have pics of the area? I have some of Philly, but not as many as you might think. I’ve just never really gone out for an afternoon to snap ‘em. Perhaps a bit of laziness on my part, which I justify by asking myself the following question: Why take all kinds of pics when you can just walk outside and see it all, live? Sounds pathetic, I know. *smile* Now I do have some of the subway, and the historical buildings in Old City. But not many others yet. I’m a bit nervous taking my camera out. It’s an expensive unit and I wouldn’t want to have it stolen. I used it to take the picture of me that is included with my match.com ad.

Well, time for a bath. Never made it to the bookstores yesterday. In addition to the wedding gift shopping, I had to go to the Airport and buy a ticket to Dayton, OH, which will be used at the end of the year. My company wants me to go and work Y2K at their main campus, instead of here at home. They do not trust that phone lines and pagers will work correctly at the magic hour on Dec. 31st, 1999 @ 11:59:59 PM. So, will visit them from Dec. 29th through Jan. 8th. At any rate, since I missed the book shops yesterday, going to visit them today. I’ve had my eye on this slang dictionary set from Random House Webster publishing, but have put off buying the three-volume set because of the cost. Today just might be the day though. We’ll see.

Enjoy your day. Hope you don’t get much rain from hurricane Irene, now heading for the Carolinas.

On My Short-Lived Vegetarianism

Sunday, October 17th, 1999

Dear   [Lynn],

Good for you on the vegetarianism. Abstaining from meat and dairy products (especially dairy foods) really lowers the cholesterol. I avoided meat (yes, fish included) for two years in 1996 and 1997. Then, I would have been considered an ovolacto vegetarian. However, my cholesterol readings remained somewhat high. So in 1998, I started eating small portions of meat again but gave up cheese, ice cream, eggs, and other high fat foods. Now, my blood values look much better – cholesterol down to 190, triglycerides down to 78. Eventually I’d like to become a vegan. But that is going to take much adjustment and I probably won’t be ready to make that sort of commitment for another several years. :-)

On your island, fish must be cheap to buy being that it is so readily available? And it’s very good for you also – as long as it doesn’t have too much mercury in it. Salmon and trout are my favorites.
