Dear Lynn: My Musical Tastes
Dear [Lynn],
Well, it seems that we like very different kinds of music. Most of your artists I’ve never heard of: Hildegarde Von Bingen, William Billings, Kristine Lavin, Maura O’Connell, Chennille Sisters, Four Bitchin’ Babes. These are all new to me. However I do know some Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares to You. But learning some different forms can be fun. Perhaps, if we meet, we might listen to one or two of your favorite albums while sipping spearmint tea.
My musical tastes, for the most part, center around top 40 music (pop) from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Not too big on the 90s but some of it, from Jewel, Britney Spears, Sugar Ray, and Bare Naked Ladies is nice to skate to. I have many “Greatest Hits” CDs from Neil Diamond, The Beatles, Steve Winwood, The Carpenters, and Rod Stewart to name a few. And I love those collections of hits from various artists. You know: K-Tel presents 20 Power Hits!! Original recordings, original stars.
In the 70s and 80s, the music was heavily entwined with my other memories of working at the university, the college years, and finally, the move to Dayton, OH. Many great associations were forged with that music. So, when I’m bored, a trip down memory lane with the CD player is a fun activity.
Well, by now, you’re probably on the mainland, doing all sorts of neat things. Hope it’s going well for you.
Now, I’m off to get some supper on this cold, dreary Philadelphia night. Perhaps a trip to Boston Market. Or maybe just the 7-11 down the street. I dunno.
Talk to you soon,
Tom Hesley
