Dear Lynn: On Neon Lights

Wednesday, October 27th, 1999

Dear [Lynn],

The buk of this post has been moved.  Find it in the   Tom’s Views –> What Determines Neon Light Color?   piece.

Now radio and TV tubes glow with some interesting colors, because in some of them, like the mercury vapor rectifier for example, you have two electrodes suspended inside a glass tube. This envelope, is full of mercury vapor, just like in neon signs, where a current is made to flow through the gas, generating the light. However, the purpose of these tubes is not to produce the pretty blue light as it is in a neon sign. These tubes convert electricity from AC to DC for use by the other radio circuits. The light they make is just a nice byproduct of their operation.

LONG LIVE ELECTRONICS ! ! !

There. How’s that?

Dear Lynn: On My Sleep Requirements

Wednesday, October 27th, 1999

Hi   [Lynn].

Yes, I need about 7.5 hours each night, give or take a half hour. But last night, I was excited about pursuing the Eudora issue, and so didn’t need as much. This is not, however, the normal rule. :-)

I’m Buying Eudora

Wednesday, October 27th, 1999

Dear   [Lynn],

Okay. Here’s where we are. I have ordered a copy of Eudora. Should be here in a few days. Once I get it installed and interfaced with the mail servers at work, . I will try sending the pics through again. The theory is that if sent from a Eudora email reader, the necessary MIME components will be included, that should allow you to link to the attachments and view the pics.

Eudora MIME Settings

Wednesday, October 27th, 1999

Yep, a type. You got me. :-)

On Eudora: Your MIME setting confirms the hypothesis that the problem is likely not at your end – or at least, not something you can do anything about. I hope to get Eudora up and running tonight and then send you a few test messages from it.

Any DOUBLE parking involved on the boat? :-)

Dry you hair? Is your hair long?

Talk to you when you return. Enjoy yourself.

Dear Lynn: Emailing Pics Problem

Wednesday, October 27th, 1999

Hey  [Lynn].

It turns out that they have some POP3 servers set up at work, that I should be able to configure Eudora to talk to. Once that’s done, will try sending you an attachment from Eudora and see if it works any better. I’ll work on that tonight.

Emailing Pics Problems

Wednesday, October 27th, 1999

Good morning again,   [Lynn].

No, I don’t recognize this person in that third pic.

I haven’t viewed the other pics he sent. I cannot view them directly on the pulse account (that is a UNIX account that uses a rather antiquated email reader). But it comes in handy for troubleshooting email problems.

Okay, I understand the problem. Eudora is looking for MIME headers in the email message, which my reader is not providing. I may be able to set a switch to enable them or send you the pics from a MIME enabled account. Stay tuned.
