Dear Lynn: Noisy Neighbors, Y2K, and Mail

Tuesday, November 30th, 1999

Hey there,   [Lynn].

No problem on last night, and your tiredness. You work very hard, starting VERY early in the morning. Will make a concerted effort to end these talks around 9:30 or 10:00.

The neighbors were reasonably quiet the rest of last night. This morning, I went to the doctors office downstairs. They agreed to sign my petition about the excessive noise. Now I have to type it up and take it there for the signatures. Looks like I’ll have four additional signatures to add to my own (including a doctor). Gaining momentum for sure. Have one more neighbor to visit, although since they only share one wall with the noisemakers, they may not be willing to sign. But it’s worth a try anyhow.

Today is going well, although a few other problems were discovered although they’re not Y2K related. *phew* But they might as well be, because they must be resolved before we can release our Y2K fixes. Such is the life of a computer scientist. :-)

Piles of mail, huh? Know what you mean and can definitely empathize.

Talk to you later.

Dear Tamara: Camp’s-a-Coming!

Sunday, November 28th, 1999

Hi   [Tamara].

Happy Thanksgiving to you also.

Yes, I will indeed be gong to the retreat at camp next week.

Hmmm. I hadn’t heard that   [Rick]   was having such health problems that he was considering backing out of the winter camp trip. But then, I’ve been away for the past four days and so there are probably lots of new news items that I have not yet heard. Ah well. Such is the price of going away. :-)

Hope your computer recovery is going well. Those hard drive crashes are almost always nasty, and definitely never convenient.

Happy holidays to you, and we’ll talk to you soon, most definitely.

Later.

Dear Lynn: Back From Thanksgiving

[Lynn],

Hi there. I just got in the door. Need to return some phone calls as well. But will call you later on. Looking forward to an “unrushed” chat with you. It’s been so long. :-)

The train trip was uneventful, although the weather was very sunny and crisp. Quite chilly (low 40s). But not bad. Got some nice pics of my sister’s house and of a ho down we went to on Friday night. I didn’t dance much. Just took lots of pictures. Hey, everyone’s got a niche to fill. Right?

Catch you soon.

Tom

Bowling Subbing

Saturday, November 20th, 1999

Testing 1, 2, 3.

Hi there. Had fun bowling today and making new friends … always a joy.

Hope I got your address right.

I won’t be around to sub on Saturdays any more this year. Next bowling day will be Jan. 15th, 2000. Lots of Y2K issues (and vacation) to resolve in the meantime. So, perhaps we’ll bowl together again then.

Take care, and happy holidays to you.

Letter to Lynn

Saturday, November 20th, 1999

Hi   [Lynn].

The temperature went into the upper 60s today here in Philly. Sunny in the morning, but clouds in the afternoon.

Just got back from bowling. Scored a 110, 153, and a 105, for an average today of 122.6666… A couple pins over my yearly average today. Switched to my 16 Lb. ball and took my own bowling shoes today. This Made a marked difference.

Found a Y2K related problem in a portion of our software yesterday. We have a theoretical workaround, but must test this short term solution further. I hope it works long enough to get us through the millennium change. Then, we’ll apply a long term fix, sometime in January.

What is “an ig dump run?”   :-)    Besides, you’re supposed to be on vacation. What in the world are you doing hauling stuff around during your break? Probably just being nice – your nature. Big hearted and all.

Missed talking to you also. Oh well. We have to get used to periods like this. When I go to the winter camp in early December, we’ll have to endure another period of phone silence for three days. But then, the following weekend, we’ll be visiting in person. What a Christmas treat that will be. You’re not Mrs. Clause by chance, are you?

I Never read ‘The Road Not Taken’, but did read, ‘The Road Less Traveled’ by M. Scott Peck. Does that count? :-) At any rate, sounds like a book worth reading.

Well, gotta go too. Take care and be careful while you’re traveling. Can’t wait until we talk live again.

See ya,
Tom Hesley

Letter to Lynn: 1999-11-19

Friday, November 19th, 1999

Hi   [Lynn].

So you have a color printer? What kind? I have a Cannon Bubblejet but it doesn’t work anymore. I’ll probably pitch it before moving.

It’s good to know that I APPEAR so organized, accomplishing what seems to the outside observer to be quite a lot in a day. And I’ll tell you no differently. :-)

Still feeling sad about letting Mom down when she learned that I would not be moving home in the near future. But in getting the travel arrangements in order for the Dayton trip at the end of the year, I was reminded of how difficult it was (and will be) to get around there – always having to ask for rides and hoping that people won’t be too busy to help. No, I cannot willfully put myself in that situation again. Nope.

Thank you for being there, through all that.

Later,
Tom

Sssshhhhh. I Love Quiet

Friday, November 19th, 1999

Dear   [Lynn],

I do like quiet. But I like socializing also, like you. A balance. You know. But I hate noise I didn’t ask for, especially when it occurs in my home and it is not my mate or myself who is making it. :-)

I could live with you wanting quiet. I’m a quite noiseless person myself. :-) Yes however, we’d just have to make sure we stay in sync.

Nice talking to you today. You’re no doubt on the boat right now. Have fun.

Letter to Lynn: 1999-11-19

Friday, November 19th, 1999

Dear   [Lynn],

Interesting. It seems like we’ve touched on most (if not all) your passions that you’ve mentioned in our phone talks.

Fortunately, it won’t take ‘years’ for us to meet. Only weeks. Seems like years though.

I’ve come to care about you too. And even though we’ll be meeting soon, this relationship still feels ‘safe’. There seems to be no lack of openness between us.

Yes, I remember licking stamps for mail. I used to exchange audio cassettes with various friends over the years. Just sent one to a friend near Scranton, PA in August. Tapes are nice because you can hear the person’s voice.

More later on this ‘beliefs’ thing. I’m a bit too tired tonight to delve into it and may just wait to talk to you on the phone about them. You already know many of them though, and you’re still talking to me. I guess you haven’t heard anything too strange yet, ‘eh?

Letter to Lynn on Moving Home

Thursday, November 18th, 1999

Dear   [Lynn],

Yes, quiet is divine. I’d move into a library if I could. :-)

Thanks for helping clarify the relocation issue. I told Mom of my decision to stay here in Phllly tonight. She was somewhat disappointed but very understanding nonetheless. She’s a great mom. Thanks for being here (there) during this tenuous time.
