My Sony Digital Camera: 1999-12-12
Hi [J].
The camera with an additional 48 MB memory card, carrying case, and UV filter was roughly $1900. If you just bought the bare bones camera, you might be able to find it for $1500. However, it comes with an 8 MB card but this really doesn’t have much space when you’re taking 24 bit color (true color) photos. So I bought the extra memory. That was $230. The carrying case was $40, and the UV filter was $50.
If you want to email the pics you take with this camera, then you need to install some software on your computer (drivers for the memory card reader), and you must also plug in the supplied memory card reader to your parallel printer port. This is somewhat more complicated than simply removing a floppy disk from a so equipped camera and inserting it into the floppy drive on your computer. But once you get it set up, it’s really no more trouble. Be warned however, that the driver software that was current when I made this purchase makes Windows 98 crash while booting. However it works fine with Windows 95. Sony may have already addressed the problem and posted a corrected version. But I just haven’t gotten around to downloading it yet.
On getting photo prints from digital pics: Yes, Kodak (I believe) offers this service. You can send them a photo CD (and probably other data formats as well), and they’ll make prints of the pics for you. But I cannot attest to the quality of these prints, as I have not yet done this.
