Another Late Train

Monday, January 10th, 2000

Dear   [Lynn],

Well, the train was over 4 hours late. So, good thing I didn’t call you when I arrived at 9:30, since you are already sleeping.

Nope, colds and dentists do not mix. Not at all.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Later.

Packing for the Move Home

Monday, January 10th, 2000

Dear [Lynn],

On the IMWTK question: Forget it.

10 to 16 foot seas? Sounds like it would be a rough ride. You sure you want to chance it?

Eek eek! :-)

Started packing tonight. Carried my old friend, the couch, out to the trash. It served me well for five years – I got it second hand in 1995. And it really wasn’t that comfortable and I didn’t want to take it to Altoona.

Plans for later tonight: Pay all bills. talk to Diane (sister), and bring all boxes upstairs from the basement. Oh, and of course, I’ll talk to you if you’re around.

Ba ba ba ba.

Later.

Dear Am

Monday, January 10th, 2000

Hi  [AM].

Oh, the trip was uneventful. In fact, the plane was a few minutes early arriving in Philly.

On RMS’s group, here are some tid bits to consider. As I saw it:
• I last worked in her group in 1998 and left it in October of that year.
• She had just become a manager for the first time when she took over our group in 1997. She may have improved in the time since the reorg that separated us. Do Keep these statements in mind when evaluating my comments below.
• My experience was one of very high pressure. She pushed too hard, and seemed to have serious problems understanding just how much her team should reasonably be expected to accomplish. Nor could she easily say “No” to outside groups who levied requirements on her. As a result, we worked very hard and very long hours over an unusually long stretch of months.
• I was on call 50% of the time. I was on for six weeks and off for six weeks.
• She had little technical knowledge. As such, she was unable to form well-informed opinions on our performance. She was next to impossible to impress, primarily I think, because she had no modern day development experience.
• Over all, I did not like the situation.
• However, on a personal level, she is a caring, honest, giving person who helps when she can. She’ll make time to talk when you need it, and she seems pretty good at teambuilding.

Sorry I cannot offer more encouragement. You might talk with G and J for more positive views.

Yep, I’m Home Again

Monday, January 10th, 2000

Dear Sister Diane,

Yep, I’m back home. And I am back on my diet. The Thanksgiving / Christmas holiday season this year cost me 11.5 pounds. Hopefully, I can lose this by sometime in late February.

I need to talk to you on the phone, about Mom’s estate. Will call this evening. Or, if you won’t be around then, let me know when would be a good time. This will probably take a half-hour.

Congratulations on your Y2K work. Sounds like you didn’t have too much to deal with.

Well, back to work with me. Talk to you later today.

Later.

Back to Work in Philly

Monday, January 10th, 2000

Good morning.

[Lynn had asked what IMWTK stood for.]

IMWTK – Inquiring Minds Want To Know. :-) This is a popular acronym seen in Internet newsgroups.

All is well here.

Busy day today, so must get going. Take care and will talk to you later on.
