Modem Discussion

Dear   [Lynn],

Well, you can go with either a
• PCMCIA external modem that plugs into a slot on the back of the PC
• An internal one that must be installed inside the notebook
• or an external serial modem such as what I have here.

The internal one would be most convenient – less cables to deal with and you wouldn’t have to worry about carrying an external modem around in addition to the PC. I’d recommend the US Robotics brand of modem. They also call themselves 3com. I’ve used several of their modems over the years and have found them to be quite reliable. And, it looks like they can be had for $60 or less. Of course, your laptop machine must have a free PCMCIA slot. For the external serial one, you’d need a free serial port (COM1 for example)

What sorts of external connectors an internal slots does her computer have? Its compliment of available ports will drive the modem selection process.
