Cholesterol Still Up
Dear  [Lynn],
My cholesterol is still a bit high, at 217 (borderline actually), measured just prior to camp. Looks like further dietary refinements are needed, and I want to lose about 15 more pounds.
The doctor strongly suggested that I begin taking cholesterol-lowering drugs. I however, am reluctant to do this, as the long-term effects of these drugs on the liver and other organs are still not very well known. So we agreed that I’d work on keeping my fat intake below 20 grams per day and fiber intake above 30 grams per day for the next three months. Then, in November, he’ll do more blood work. If the cholesterol reading is still above 200, then I agreed to start taking the medicine. This will mean trips to see hiim every month or two for more blood work to make sure that the drugs aren’t harming my liver. Hmmm, isn’t it a sign of getting old, when you have to start taking daily medication and submit to frequent routine blood tests? Â
Well, time to get to bed. Hope you’re doing well. I think about you often, and really miss talking. Life and circumstances can sure be cruel that way.
Later.
Tom
