More Netscape 6.1
Monday, October 29th, 2001Dear [Lynn],
Yes, you can uninstall Netscape 6.1 by going to the start menu –> Settings –> Control Panel. In the window that comes up, find and run the “Add / Remove Programs” applet. This will give you a list of practically all the programs installed on your computer. Look for Netscape 6.1 in the list, select it, and then click the Add/Remove button. Then, follow the resulting prompts. Once you Uninstall Netscape, reboot your machine and see if the slowness disappears.
Not sure about preserving the bookmarks. You can try the following, however:
1. Before uninstalling Netscape 6.2, start it up.
2. At the main menu, to Bookmarks –> Manage Bookmarks. This brings up the “Bookmarks for default” window, which displays all your current bookmarks, and gives you an opportunity to reorder, delete, or otherwise manage them.
3. In this window, go to File –> Export Bookmarks. This brings up a file browser window called “Export bookmark file.”
4. Here, enter a file name that you’d like it to save your bookmarks data to. Note the directory where you put this file. Then, enter the file name and press the “Save” button. This saves your bookmarks data to your hard drive in an HTML file.
5. Then, go ahead and uninstall Netscape 6.1.
6. Reinstall Netscape 4.7.
7. Once 4.7 is up and running, go to the Bookmarks menu, and choose “Manage bookmarks”. I believe 4.7 has this or an equivalent, but am not absolutely certain.
8 You’ll probably get another file browser window that allows you to select the bookmarks file to import. Locate and select the file you saved in step 4 above, and press the “Open” button.
9. This should load 4.7 with all the bookmarks you had in 6.1. However, there may be some backward compatibility issues reading a bookmarks file prepared in 6.1, into 4.7. You’ll just have to try it and see what happens. I believe it should work though, as the bookmarks file is very simple HTML, which hasn’t changed much over the last few versions of Netscape.
On another note: I installed 6.1 and did not experience the problems you did. So, you either downloaded a corrupt installation file for Netscape, or, Netscape is not the problem.
I downloaded my Netscape 6.1 via Explorer, without problems. To my knowledge, there is nothing about either Explorer or Netscape that would break the downloading of the other. So, it shouldn’t matter which browser you use to download software, even if that software is a competing browser package.
You might try launching Netscape 6.1 again when you have some time. I
I’m curious if running Netscape is really what is triggering the slowness in your computer.
Good luck.
Tom
