More Netscape 6.1 Stuff

Dear   [Lynn],

I downloaded my Netscape 6.1 via Explorer, without problems. To my knowledge, there is nothing about either Explorer or Netscape that would break the downloading of the other.

You might try launching Netscape again when you have some time. I’m curious if running Netscape is really what is triggering the slowness in your computer.

As far as any scheduled programs on your computer: Programs are launched by many different software components in the computer, besides the task scheduler. Lots of them are kicked off when your machine boots. One of these might be running in the background, making your disk drive chug away. Often, virus scanning software does this, but it could be any number of things. If you go to the start menu –> Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> System Information, you’ll get a Windows Explorer type window with some menus at the top. Choose Tools –> System Configuration Utility. That will produce a multi-tabbed window. In there, choose the Startup tab. This will show you all the programs (the checked ones) that run when your computer is booted. You can disable some of these by unchecking them, hitting okay, and then restarting your computer. I have most of mine turned off because then interfere with the CD burner when I’m making music CDs. Perhaps one or more of these is making your computer work hard while you’re away from it.

Wow, I’m flattered. I know you have lots of computer-literate friends, and for me to be “the best techie” you know, well, thanks for the compliment.

Later.

Tom

I would have to agree with Lynn. You truly are the best computer techy that there is out there. You’re truly smart and I have to say that your time in college certainly paid off. Even if you didn’t think so. You’ve certainly have helped me with my share of computer issues. Even though I’ve only known you for the last six years, you’ve certainly have taught me quite a lot about learning new things about particular devices. You’ve gotten me out of what I call disastrous situations. Thanks a lot for all of your help over the years.
