Demerits

Thursday, July 11th, 2002

Dear [Tad],

Speaking of demerits, what’s the most you ever got in a single week? I think I got 27 one week in eighth grade, and I got some of them from [KC], who, before I came along, had never given anybody demerits. I guess I really roasted her. :)

I called the Flanigans this morning, but no one answered. I’ll try again. . .

Rick at Alumni Weekend

Tuesday, July 9th, 2002

Dear   [Rick],

I’m getting in touch with the alumni officials now, about the deadline dates for registering. I’ll let you know.

Yes, I wouldn’t mind getting more 4-track recorders. The one you sent me though makes a loud grinding noise. Haven’t looked at yet but hope to do so soon.

Rick Coming to WPSBC Alumni Weekend

Tuesday, July 9th, 2002

Dear   [Tad],

Can you put me in touch with someone who’s “in the know” about the upcoming alumni weekend? I need to purchase another ticket for my guest. Unfortunately, I returned the newsletter tape before I know [that my buddy] would be joining us, so I have no phone numbers for the Flanigans. Also, I wondered if they’re sending out tickets for the event. The check I sent them for my reservation was cashed, but I haven’t received any tickets yet. Do you know who I might talk to about these issues?

Thanks,
Tom Hesley

Hotel Info for Rick

Monday, July 8th, 2002

Hey [Rick].

Yes, I did receive the 4-track machine last week. I thought I sent you email to let you know that, but either I forgot to send it, or it got lost in transit.

At any rate, did you get the Holiday Inn information for the WPSBC alumni weekend I sent you? I’m going to be making my train reservations this week. I’ll be taking the early train both ways. The trip to Pittsburgh on August 9th should get us there at roughly 3:00 PM. I’ll call you to discuss further in the next few days.

Later,

Diane’s Wedding Reception

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2002

Dear sister Diane,

I have 11 bags of ice in my freezer, and could probably fit 4 to 6 more. How many bags do you need me to get?

Thanks,
Tom Hesley

Summer Camp Again

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2002

Dear   [Ang],

Good deal. Wow, overseas? Have a great trip, and stay away from the middle east. :-)

I have a two-week vacation coming up, starting on July 20th. Going to the summer camp this year to do some hiking, boating, and probably a bit of eating too. :-)

It’s been so hot here lately. I hope this is not a portent of weather to come at camp. One year, it reached 104 degrees in the village, and all you could do to stay cool was lay around on the few shaded parts of sidewalks and patios in the fronts of the cabins, which stayed relatively cool. We had ice-filled water coolers so it wasn’t too bad. But all activities were cancelled on that day, and several people were taken to hospitals for heat stroke. But normally, the temps run in the mid 80s during the day and all in all, the weather is quite pleasant.

Well, catch you later on. Be careful on your vacation, and bring back lots of pictures.

Changing Drive Letters in XP

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2002

Dean,

Good deal. I never did any reassigning of drive letters in XP. That feature sure saves lots of time.

[It certainly beats having to change jumpers and switch cable connectors around.]

Assigning Drive Letters

Monday, July 1st, 2002

Dear Dean,

Some computer BIOS packages allow you to reassign drive letters. I’m not familiar with BIOS on your particular computer, and this software is different for each motherboard. Thus, it comes in hundreds of flavors these days. So, You’ll need to check that out and see if such a function exists in yours.

Barring that, in order to get the system to assign letter D to your local drive, you can reconfigure the jumper settings on the disk drive you repartitioned, making sure you put it as a SLAVE drive in the primary IDE channel, while the drive you want to be drive C is set up as the MASTER in the same IDE channel. This might mean moving the data connectors around for some of your other devices in the computer to the secondary IDE channel. The cables for each IDE channel are typically marked on the motherboard as PRI and SEC IDE. Unless you feel really confident about doing this, I’d suggest that you take the system to a computer technician. They could probably set it up for you so that your newly formatted drive becomes drive D.

Hotel for Rick, Redux

Monday, July 1st, 2002

[Rick],

There is a Holiday Inn, about three blocks away from WPSBC school for the blind in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. It is on Lytton Avenue. If you like, I can get the phone number of it. Let me know.

Anyway, the alumni weekend begins August 9th and ends August 11th. I’ll work on getting your tickets for it this week.
