Dear El,
The book is coming along, although I’ve been concentrating primarily on getting the remodeling in this new office finished. I just had the office painted, new doors, and nine book shelves installed, and installed high-speed Internet up here along with state-of-the-art office lighting. The phone lines still must be run, but I’m getting close. Then, I’m also insulating this area and there are probably a couple weeks of work left to do on that project. Then, once all that is done, it will be new-carpet time. Then, finally, I’ll be able to organize everything so I can start making some serious headway on the book. Stay tuned.

Dear [El],
I’m up to 8000 songs now (I had 5700 in December). There should be no problem hitting 10000 by this summer. I might have hit it already if I did not have to by more hard drives. But that’s all done, and there’s enough storage now to hold roughly 12000.
I’ve been doing a bit of Djing here. Have a couple of offers for gigs, but they’re in smoke-filled bars. Not quite my dream workplace.
But I may work a couple of them just to get established.
I did purchase a couple amplifiers and am looking at speakers now. We have a little dance area set up in my brother-in-law’s garage where I play to our friends and family every Friday night. We just added four black lights and plan on putting up a disco ball and strobes. The crowds that come each week are getting bigger and bigger. In fact, at the New Year’s eve party, I made my first $12 as a DJ. I know that doesn’t sound like much (wouldn’t even buy one full-length CD these days). But it sure felt nice that people gave me that much. Probably, once I get the speakers, I’ll do more jobs out and about.

Joe,
Here’s info on a software package that can turn you PC into an audio recorder with timer functions much as a VCR has. Check it out. It will probably do what you want to accomplish with that Rolling Stones concert. [It's called Cakewalk Pyro 2003. I forwarded him a message I received from Cakewalk, advertising the product.]

Dear [Mentat],
Thanks for the info [...]. These notes look like they’ll be very helpful.
Yes, it’s quite cold out, but very warm up here in the new office, where I started working last week. There is still much to be done – doors need finished, phone lines need installing, and so on. But at least now, it’s starting to come together very nicely. I just installed high-speed Internet up here last weekend. It’s wonderful.
Well, hang in there with school. With each term, you’ll probably notice it getting harder as the material presented becomes more complex. Hang in there. You know the old saying: Do it or die trying.
Well, I have to get to work. Talk to you again very soon.

Dear sister Diane,
Well, it will be a few weeks before these arrive. The nice thing about getting CDs on the Internet is that they’re somewhat cheaper than in the record store, but you have to wait a while for them.
See you tonight,

Dear sister Diane,
There’s a group called “Rednex” that released a techno-dance version of this song in 2002. Originally, the song was a hillbilly tune released in 1995. Was the version you heard a dance one (heavy drums and synths)? I ordered both versions.

Dear sister Diane,
I looked into this song a bit. There are several groups who do it, or other songs with this title. Several of them have it marked as “Explicit lyrics” which means that those versions probably wouldn’t go over too well in mixed company.
If you could find out the group, that would help me narrow my search. Perhaps you know the people who ran the party or wedding at which you heard the song, and they might know.

Dear sister Diane,
Thanks. I’ll look into getting it [that song Cotton Eye Joe] [for my DJ library].

Dear Tina,
Thanks. An interesting article.
I never did get down to Verizon Wireless on Market street while I was in Philly to find a headset for my phone. But I don’t use the phone much here in Altoona. I’ll get down there the next time I visit Philly.
Happy New year,
Tom

Thought:
If we don’t believe that we ourselves are valued by other people, it would be easy to discount others’ feelings – since in our view, they don’t care about us anyway. I think I may have been this way at work. That is: People don’t like me. So why should I concern myself with their sensitivities? After all, since they don’t like me anyway, they won’t be hurt by anything I say, for they’re not vulnerable to me. So, I can disregard their feelings.
