Dear Tina: 2003-04-29

Tuesday, April 29th, 2003

[Tina],

I just wanted to write and thank you for listening to my article and offering your feedback. I’m sorry if I appeared to argue my positions too forcefully. I did not mean to imply that your views had absolutely no truth to them. They just made me think about relationships in ways I hadn’t considered before. And that is a bit uncomfortable for me at times. But please keep challenging me. Perhaps, between the two of us, we can figure out ways to help each other to find the loves of our lives. :-)

I’m going to figure out how to incorporate your suggestion that I include some of the good things that [Melinda] did for me, to help the reader understand why I kept going back for more. That was a great suggestion, and I think I can incorporate it without lengthening the article too much.

You’re right. It wasn’t JUST my misplaced passion for [Melinda] that kept me hanging with her. She was certainly neglectful. But as a friend, she was a rather good one [at times].

Take care. We’ll talk again soon.

Lynn’s Computer Upgrades

Thursday, April 10th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

Good thing you’re getting rid of 95. I don’t believe Microsoft supports it at all anymore, not even on their web sites.

I can appreciate the cash flow issues, as I have some of those myself right now. :)

But you might be able to get a few more years of life out of your home machine as long as you don’t put any CPU-hungry software on it. Up until last month, I was using a Pentium Pro 200 MHz. machine for keeping bills, writing small documents and such. I believe yours is faster than that one.

You might be able to get a bit more speed out of your box if you put Windows XP on it, but this is not guaranteed. Certain bench tests show XP to run some of the common tasks such as desktop operations and Internet browsing a bit faster and more reliably since it runs in full 32-bit protected mode (unlike Win 98 which still has lots of 16-bit code in it). It tends to crash less.

However, upgrading an old machine like yours may put you into the bind of finding XP-compatible drivers for your printer, modem, video, and sound cards. Also, some of the software that runs on Windows 98 will not run well on XP. So there is definitely a gamble.

My Latest Cold

Thursday, April 10th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. But I’ve been really under the weather for the last week with a nasty cold. I haven’t had one this bad in about 10 years. Most colds in me usually affect one place at a time, starting with the sniffles and headaches, then the sore throat, and finally, the chest. But this one hit all three spots at the same time and for the past three days, all I felt like doing was staying in bed. It’s starting to break though and I’m hopeful that I’ll feel good enough over the weekend to get outside a bit.
