Update: 2003-08-14

Thursday, August 14th, 2003

Wendel,

This is Tom Hesley. Hope you made it back home on Monday. Great seeing you again after almost four years and hearing your stories of Washington et al.

I ran a few searches on Google and didn’t see any of those “Untitled” articles you were having problems opening. So I wondered if you could run the search yourself, and then send me links (URLs) to these articles. Then, I’ll see if I can copy and paste them into an email message and send them to you.

All is well here. I’ve written a few thousand words this week, and ordered some light show equipment for a DJ gig I’ll be doing at the end of August.

Writing and Djing seem like such diverse disciplines. But I like bouncing between the two. When I grow weary of one, I switch to the other for a time. In this way, I hope to bee bop my way to success in either one, or both these fields, without getting burned out on either one of them.

Well, I’ll talk to you later. Take care, and do write soon.

A Philly Presence Again?

Saturday, August 9th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

[...] I am considering re establishing a presence in Philadelphia again (for the third time). Hopefully, this time will be the charm.

I’m looking at studio apartments in center city so I can be close to lots of people in order to research my books, and to alleviate some of the isolation and boredom which has engulfed me here in Altoona. I’d spend half-time there, and half time here with Mom.

If I go ahead with that, I’d need to get at least a part time job down there, something very simple, like fast food, book selling, Etc. It all depends on how quickly the DJ business becomes viable. I had not envisioned Djing as a long-term venture, but rather as a stop-gap money maker, just until the books begin selling.

Djing is great for this as it affords me opportunities to practice public speaking. Right now, my biggest horror is that a publisher, as part of their marketing plans for my books, will ask that I travel to various cities and speak to hoards of folks about my material. **** Y I K E S ****** Hopefully, I’ll be ready to do that when the time comes.

So, that’s what’s up with me. How are you and [your roommate] getting along? How’s Bella?

Take care, and write again soon,
Tom

Met Emmy at Camp

Saturday, August 9th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

I met a young lady (very young – 22 years younger than I) from Lancaster a few weeks ago at summer camp. It’s too early to know where things are going, but we seem to enjoy talking to each other a great deal. It sure is nice to have a buddy to chat with daily on the phone again.

Family Update

Saturday, August 9th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

Mom is doing well. [Her man friend] is still here. :(

Diane has so many plants in her yard this year that it seems like she’s running a nursery down there.

All is well with Rich and Christine.

Joann and Mary Ann are busy raising their families. Don’t see much of Mary Ann these days as she lives in State College.

Everyone, over all, is fine.

DJ Business Growing

Saturday, August 9th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

The DJ business is starting to pick up a little. I just booked 3 gigs over the next several weeks. Not much money in it yet. But I have purchased just about all the equipment I need to get started, including an old van for equipment transport. This is the first time I’ve ever owned a motor vehicle. I feel so important. :)

Writing Progress

Saturday, August 9th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

All is well here. Business is slow, but the books I’m writing are getting bigger and bigger (somewhere around 100 total pages so far). I’m targeting 500 pages for each for two of the books, and 200 pages for the third. Probably in a year or two, I’ll be ready to take them to a literary agent.

Welcome to XP, Lynn!

Saturday, August 9th, 2003

Dear   [Lynn],

Hey there.

Congratulations on your purchase. I think you’ll be pleased with XP performance and reliability. I have it on two of my computers now and it hasn’t crashed once in a year and a half. For certain tasks, like searching through large numbers of files in Windows Explorer, it’s a fair amount slower than 98. But when you run it on a computer that’s almost ten times as fast as the one you were running 98 on, you probably won’t even notice this. Also, the fact that XP is all 32-bit code now makes it run even more reliably and faster when executing programs.

My Goiter: 2003-08-06

Wednesday, August 6th, 2003

Dear sister Diane,

Sorry to hear you may have this. However, at least you’ll likely be able to correct it with thyroid hormone pills.

My condition however, was not hypothyroidism. I was neither hypo nor hyper. The levels of thyroid hormone in my blood are normal. My problem is just that my thyroid gland is enlarged. No other symptoms than this are indicated.

Good luck with getting your situation straightened out.

Sorry I didn’t call you last night. But I had a writer’s workshop to attend, and by the time I got home from that, I figured it’d be too late to call.

Catch you later,
Tom
