Wow, Joe! That’s a big piece of news. Congratulations. What prompted this?

Yes, I’ll be a good reference for you.

Yep, I have a girl friend. Going on six months now. We’re getting along very well and it’s nice having a lady to talk to who really cares. She’s the twenty year-old who I might have mentioned a while back.

The business is going well. I have 26,300 songs on the computer now and my 200 GB drive is getting full. So I’m going to have to switch to a 2-drive configuration.

I’m writing an Access database for the music to speed up searching and to make the two drives act like one so that I don’t have to be concerned about which drive a particular song is on. The database will hide those details.

Did three gigs in December. Also, I have so far, three potential gigs coming up over the next few months. I’m going to try and step up the pace a bit. Last year, I did about 12 gigs. This year, I’d like to do 15 to 20. We’ll have to see how it goes.

I haven’t done much writing lately. The book so far has 70,000 words. I guess I’m still trying to find my “voice.” Writing a book is like shooting at a moving target. Just when you think you know what you’re going to say, you learn something new that changes your whole perspective. That’s happened several times on this project. So, right now, I’m in a kind of wait-and-see mode, and I’ll start writing again one my point of view settles down and stops changing so much. :)

I’ll give you a call sometime soon and we can chat a bit about your upcoming venture.

Dear [Dana],

The DJ work is going well also. I’m up to 26,000 songs now and I still have my hands in software development. With that many songs, I’m writing a database program to manage them all, as well as scripts to add Id3v2 tags to my mp3 files. I like programming much better without the pressure. :) I was never much into the whole “team” concept and very much enjoy working on my own, with only my customers to answer to.

Writing Plans

Saturday, January 3rd, 2004

[Dana],

Happy new year. Sorry I haven’t responded before now. But being self-employed is busier than working for a company. :)

Anyway, I hope to write philosophical books on romantic relationships. The one I’m working on now is 70,000 words so far with the goal being around 150,000.

When I started it in 2002, I had a different view of how it would shape up than I do today. Writing is quite the journey of self-discovery, so I’ve learned. What I believed when I started this project, I no longer believe. So writing the book is almost like shooting at a moving target. Hopefully I’ll nail it sometime in the next few years. I’m still trying to find “my voice” in prose.

I’m living in Altoona, PA now, where my family is. So I see them all the time. That’s much nicer than living so far away from them as I did when I resided in Dayton (365 miles). I don’t imagine I’ll ever leave them again, although if I do, it would be just a move to Pittsburgh (a 2.5 hour train ride away). It just depends on how life shakes out.

Glad to hear your family is doing so well. Give my regards to [your husband].

Talk to you later,
Tom Hesley
