Suppers with the Philly Gang

Thursday, September 30th, 2004

Dear   [Lex],

Things have been okay. Got flooded this month and have been working to get all that mess cleaned up. Didn’t lose too much though.

Sorry to hear that you weren’t included in their Labor Day activities, especially after all you do for them. Life just isn’t just sometimes. That would hurt.

Have you stopped going out with them fully yet?

The only thing I know is that there seems to be lots of back-stabbing in that crowd. Especially with [Rick], who stabbed me in the back at least twice this year that I know of, and probably more times that that.

Well, I’m not going to put up with it anymore. [Rick] tried to ruin a relationship I had going with a young woman in January by telling her “bad” things about me, behind my back. You’d think that if he were a true friend, that he’d be singing my praises to her not putting me down. But hey, that’s [Rick]. :-)

But I won’t subject myself to that any longer, from anyone. I know what he’s about now, and plan to stay clear of him in the future. Life’s just too short to spend much time tolerating folks like him. So I’m done. Who said that we should strive to get along with everybody? Sometimes, it’s better to just avoid certain people. I’ve finally learned that lesson well.

I’m glad that you and [Jack] are still buddies. I just left [him] a message. Hopefully, I’ll hear back from him today to see how he’s doing.

What’s your phone number down there? Perhaps I’ll give you a call sometime.

Later,
Tom

Dear kandi: 2004-09-30

Thursday, September 30th, 2004

Dear [Kandi],

Yep, the winter retreat is the first weekend of December, which, unfortunately is a whole week before you get home. The retreat is from December 2nd through December 5th this year.

The cleanup from the flood is going slowly. Our furnace, water heater, washer, and dryer need replacing. My DJ equipment was also touched by the water, but I may have only lost one CD player and possibly two of the lights. The amps, speakers, and mixers appear to be fine. The computers were safe, as they were on the 2nd floor. *phew* I’m glad I have six copies of the music in multiple locations just to guard against loss due to fires and floods.

Most of the water that got into the basement, came up through the floor. There are these old 6X6 posts, which have rotted at the bottoms over the years since 1947, when this house was built. About 4 years ago, the house appeared to be sinking in the middle due of this rot. So I installed steel four cellar jacks to get things back up to where they should be.

However, we never removed those old posts, figuring they’d not do any harm if left there. When they built the house, the posts were positioned, and then the concrete was then poured around them. But with the rotting, the seals between the posts and the floor degraded over the years, and this is where the water found its way in. In fact, the night of the flood, I was working on the west wall, patching little holes where water was trickling in, when I started hearing this gurgling sound behind me. When I turned around, there, on the side of one post, was this bubbling column of water about two inches tall, quickly spreading outward. It appeared then that keeping the basement dry would be a losing battle.

Ironically, five minutes after that, the firemen came to the door and said we had to leave. Well, needless to say, once the water had receded, my first priority was to get those old posts out of there and fill in and seal the holes left behind. That has been done for four of the five posts. The other one is going to be a bit more difficult to remove, as it supports the steps into the cellar. But I hope to have it gone next week. We’re going to replace it with a new post but this post will set on top of the concrete floor and not be down in the floor. Fun fun fun.

We have a shed out back, and the ramp up into it floated away. A search about a mile down the road from us did not locate it, so I’m in the process of building a new one.

The last one wasn’t fastened at all, and Mom paid over $100 for it. A guy whose mother lives next door built it for her. But this time, it will be fastened, anchored, chained, and whatever else I can think of to make sure it stays put.

Also, there’s lots of debris in our yard from nearby farms, lumbar yards, and so on. Probably won’t get to remove that until next spring. Though of a different sort, flood cleanup, like college, is lots and lots of work. :) So I feel your pain. But all is well.

Anyway, take care, don’t deprive yourself of sleep, and stay away from the caffeine that so many college students depend on. That’s probably hard given the work load. But you’ll be healthier in the end.

Write again when you have the time,
Tommy

Chubby Cheeks

I don’t think Freida has chubby cheeks. She looked sort of gaunt in school.

But I suspect that she’s a tigress in bed. :-)

Oh yea, forgot to tell you. I’ll be staying with Freida this weekend, so you won’t need to make a bed for me.

No More Home Listings Please

Friday, September 24th, 2004

Friends,

Thanks for the listings you’ve sent me throughout the summer. However, I’m no longer in the market for a home. I can’t afford one in the areas I’d like to live at present. If this situation changes, I’ll let you know. But in the meantime, don’t send me anymore listings, please. Thanks for all your assistance however.

Take care,

Flood Evacuation

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004

Carl,

No, I’m not mad at you. I’m just not much into the email thing, since I write a lot in my book, and poems, and short story. Don’t take offence, but I’d rather just talk on the phone now and then. Once a week would probably be too often, but once every month or two would be grand. :-)

We were flooded and had to evacuate this past Friday night. Been working 12-hour days to clean up afterwards. We had around 4 feet of water in the basement and some of my stuff got ruined. Not too bad over all. I’m hopeful that my losses will be less than $500.

Glad to hear that you’re doing well.

Take care,
Tom Hesley

Flood Cleanup Update: 2004-09-20

Monday, September 20th, 2004

Dear   [Ann],

Yes, I was in the basement until after 1:00 am, fooling with the water heater and throwing stuff out.

Mom’s at the Laundromat today, attempting to clean some blankets that were under water.

I’m going for my bath now and will get back the salvage operation [shortly].

I’m very happy that things didn’t get any worse than they were. I was so tickled when my hammer drill, that had been completely under water, worked well yesterday when I tried it. *phew*

Tom

Flood Cleanup Update

Monday, September 20th, 2004

Dear [Ann],

Well, got the water heater back online last night. Now the challenge is keeping the water [around it] low enough that it doesn’t smother the pilot light again. Hopefully, water will stop seeping in sometime today. It isn’t coming in the front of the house anymore, but is still bubbling up through the floor around the support beams.

Also, got all the old food out of the freezer and pumped the water out of it as it lay on its back. Then I stood it up and positioned it back where it was before. It runs without blowing any circuit breakers. However, it remains to be seen if it will get cold enough. The compressor may have been damaged from running for so many hours Saturday morning on its side. But time will tell. It sounds like it always did, so I’m hopeful that it will be alright.

Well, going to get a nice hot bath. :-) This bath will really mean something.

Tom Hesley

Cat Missing in Flood

Saturday, September 18th, 2004

Dear [Ann],

Yes, we found the cat. She was hiding under a recliner in the front room on the first floor. We were relieved.

The cleanup is going slowly. We had several pumps working to get the water out, but more keeps coming in through the floor and walls. We’ll need to wait until the water truly recedes before we can get too much more done.

More later,

Leaky Cellar Walls

Friday, September 17th, 2004

Dear [Ann],

Cute [a joke she sent me].

Yes, it’s raining here. Found and fixed another leak in the basement. And, I’m watching that drain at the back of the house to make sure water doesn’t start backing up through there.

Lifted weights too. Raised the weight from 10 to 15 pounds on one of the exercises that was getting too easy. Even with the added weight, it still wasn’t too difficult.

Well, I’m off to do some laundry.

Catch you later,
Tom
