Saving Amtrak
Friends,
I’m writing to ask your aid in a most pressing situation. American rail service is disappearing! Specifically, the reduced government subsidies are making it hard for Amtrak to continue service in many cities. Pittsburgh, Altoona, and Philadelphia PA, and other points between New York and Chicago have experienced reduced train service and more cuts are on the way. The cuts are particularly noticeable in Ohio, where Youngstown and Fostoria have suffered.
Meanwhile, our roads are getting more crowded, road rage incidents are increasing, fuel shortages are causing record-high oil prices, and people everywhere are going into more and more debt to operate their own vehicles.
For those of us who do not drive, Amtrak service cuts mean loss of a valuable freedom of travel, and drastically curtail our ability to participate and contribute to society. So I urge you to write your congressmen, and to President Bush himself, and ask that Amtrak funding be expanded – not reduced. Here’s a web site that offers more information on the problem.
Please hurry. The clock is ticking for Amtrak, and there’s not much time left.
Thanks much,
Tom Hesley
