Upgrade to XP, Please

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Dear [Lynn],

You’re welcome.

I’d highly suggest that you upgrade the ME machine to XP. If you move to XP Home, you can upgrade for under $100. XP has eliminated the old 16-bit kernel components, which makes for a much more reliable system. Fewer lockups and slow-downs, and one errant program does not usually affect others in the system. So, fewer reboots are required to clear problems. I’ve left my XP machines run for several weeks at a time without issues.

Back From Camp: 2005-08-09

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Dear [Lynn],

All is well here. Just got back from camp. Gained eight pounds there. :(   But three of those pounds are already gone.

The writing is going okay. And I’ve joined the local Lions Club and have been helping them fund raise all summer. Our only fundraiser is bingo. We have a dedicated pavilion at a close by amusement park, and I work there Saturdays and Sundays, about 15 hours a week.

Looking forward to seeing your new cat. Ours are doing well. Jasper just came in and is demanding that I pet him. He’s really quite vocal, you know?

USB and Windows ME

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Dear [Lynn],

You can use USB 2.0 with WinME. However, you’ll need to install a USB 2.0 card (I’d suggest an Adaptec card. A bit more expensive, but very seamless installation and quite reliable). Otherwise, you’ll be stuck using the USB 1.1 interface already in the computer.

I’ve used Western Digital, Seagate, and Maxtor drives. All are very good. Any of these should make a good USB 2.0 external drive. They come in different shapes and sizes though. Maxtor drives often come in bigger cases that sit on the desk top, while WD drives have a lower profile, smaller case that works well when stacking several of them. These sit on the desk too but have a metallic look that makes them look too “industrial” for some office decors. But they pack well and can easily be stored along with a laptop in the same case because they’re so thin. http://www.pricewatch.com/  has pictures of the various styles of external drives to help you decide which one you’d like best.

Yes, I received them [your receipts]. I was away at camp for 11 days when they arrived. Sorry about the delay. Your reimbursement went out in yesterday’s mail.
