Updating Emmy: 2005-10-07

Dear [Emmy],

Glad you liked the cheat sheet. I’ve actually been updating that for several years now. As I learn more about food, I incorporate the new data into the document. Hope it helps you in your diet.

The Lions meeting went very well. The district governor visited our club and inducted a new member; a lady living just down the street from here actually. Then he talked about lionism and showed some movies from camp. Yes, I told [Gem] you said hi. She smiled.

It’s good to make others happy if you can. But if they start getting between you and your personal goals, then you must push them out of the way. This is especially true when what you’re dong doesn’t affect them. I mean, you need to take others’ opinions into account when you’re sharing an apartment, cooking a meal, raising a family, or buying something together. But when it comes to diet, they don’t own your body. They don’t live in it. And so, they won’t be hurt by however you choose to diet. So, just tell them to cool it already. As long as you’re avoiding the processed foods and eating lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, whole grains, nuts, and a bit of meat here and there, you can way 100 pounds and still be quite healthy. Anorexics aren’t the only thin people out there. Many people can be thin without making themselves sick.

Congratulations on your dietary changes – giving up the animal crackers. I know that must be rather painful. But it’ll get better once you’ve been away from them a little while.

Sure, I’ll help you shop, whether I go to Pittsburgh or not. I’m still undecided about school, because I talked about it with the people in the writers workshop this past Tuesday. And they didn’t think that college would improve my chances of getting published much. After all, so many popular authors never went to college, much less got a degree in writing. Since money is tight, I want to be reasonably sure that going back will indeed position me for better success. I just don’t have that feeling yet. We’ll see.

It’s been raining all day here. The back yard is drenched.

Yep, I have 2100 words in the speech now. Hope to add another 500 tomorrow and then on Monday, add the final 500. Then, I’ll revise and try reading it into a tape recorder. If it comes out to less than 35 minutes, I might have to add more words. But 3000 words for a first draft should be sufficient for test purposes anyway. That should make around a 30-minute speech.

Glad you like the reading. It’ll be very good for you over the long haul. You learn so much from it, even though it may not feel like you’re learning. You may totally forget, ten years from now, about a book you read today. But someday, something may happen that brings what you read back to you, clear as a bell, and you’ll be able to make a better decision because of that knowledge. Your teacher was right. You can’t ever have too much knowledge. Knowledge is power, and power is a good means to achieve success. So read read read!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Talk to you later,
Tom Hesley
