The ‘J’ Problem

I think I figured out where the Js are coming from. When I put smiley faces – a colon followed by a minus sign followed by a right parenthesis – Outlook translates them into a special single character that looks like a smiling face. Apparently, in transit to you, this special character is translated into a J. I’ll put three smilies next line and see if they appear as Js when you get them . . .
Are they Js?
