Updating Emmy: 2005-11-20

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

Dear [Emmy],

That’s wonderful news about the Braille note [and the data on it being successfully restored].

I’m keeping busy today, writing and cleaning up and organizing my rooms.

You’re fun to tease. :-)

Talk to you this afternoon,
Tom

More Alumni Web Site Stuff

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

Dear [Tad],

I’ll mention your receipt of Mike’s message to him.

On the alumni web site, I’m looking into adding a listserv address that would allow alumni to communicate as a group through email. The idea came from [an alumnist] and seems like a good one. This web site is taking off. Brace yourself. :-)

Thanks for following up with the IT people there at the school. The more web sites we can get to reference the alumni site, the higher it’s rankings among the popular search engines, and thus, the more likely will people find it who are looking.

My Thinning Hair

Sunday, November 27th, 2005

Dear   [Lynn],

Yep, I still have [my hair]. It was thinning in the back last year for a time. But whatever that was seems to have gone away and the hair is once again full.

Getting on WPSBC Web Site

Sunday, November 27th, 2005

Dear [Tad],

I just sent email to…

xxxxxx@yyyy.zzz

This person is indicated as a contact on the school’s web site. I wanted to have a link to our alumni site placed on the school’s site somewhere, to increase our chances of net surfers finding us.

If you know this person, would you talk up the alumni to them and tell them a bit about me? I told them that I knew you. J It might increase the odds of actually getting a link added to [the school's site at]:

http://www.wpsbc.org.

Looking for Alumni Bulletins

Sunday, November 27th, 2005

Dear [Parliamentarian],

Do you have any older alumni bulletins in either electronic, audio, or print format? It would be nice to put them on the alumni web site since people enjoy reading them so much.

Thanks,
Tom Hesley

Getting on WPSBC’s Web Site

Sunday, November 27th, 2005

[This is a letter to my high school, inviting them to place a link on their web site, to the WPSBC Alumni Association web site.]

Hi.

My name is   Tom Hesley,   a 1979 graduate of WPSBC and current treasurer and webmaster in the school’s alumni association.

The group has a web site for informing past students about each other, the organization, and school as well. To improve our odds of being found through the popular search engines, we hoped you’d be willing to place a link to our site…

http://www.wpsbc-alumni.org

somewhere on the school’s site. Perhaps it would go well under the ‘About the School’ or ‘Support Services’ links, or perhaps you could add a new tab to the top of your home page called ‘Alumni”, and put the link there.

Our organization name is…

The Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children Alumni Association

Give me a call at 814-742-xxxx or email me at pulse@xxxxxxxxx.yyy if you have questions.

Thanks very much for your consideration,

Tom Hesley

PS: Say hi to [Tad] for me if you think of it. He and I were classmates.

Updating Lex: 2005-11-23

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005

Dear [Lex],

Things are well. I’m keeping busy writing. Lots of reading too.  [Jack] tells me how you’re doing now and then. Glad to hear that you’ve reestablished the weekend dinner outing with some of the old crowd [...]. They really like going out like that.

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

Tom

Proprietary CD MP3 Players

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

Dear [Lynn],

No impatience intended. I just wanted to make sure you   really   got the point, particularly since the proprietary software was what you seemed most concerned about.

Hmmm, it’s funny. I find myself using more explanation marks, quotes, italics, underscores, and redundancy when I’m writing to blondes. I wonder why that is? Do they call that: writing for your audience? Hmmmmm????   :-)

Keymail Program on BrailleNote

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

Dear [Emmy],

Well, it seems like you learned how to send mail with keymail. Cool.

All is well here. Are you at home now?

CD MP3 Players

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

Dear [Lynn],

No, that should not be the case — not if you bought one of the ones I recommended. Just about every CD player I know plays standard CDs (like what play in your home stereo or car), as well as MP3 CDs. The Sonys also play a proprietary format called ATrack3, and if you’re going to make CDs in   this   format, then yes, you need their software, which is usually bundled with such players. But you   do not   need the software if you’re going to be playing standard and MP3-standard CDs.

Maybe if you’d purchased the player at Wal Mart, you would be more certain about it. :-)
