Uncle Jack Sargent Died

My uncle Jack Sargent died yestarday (January 4th, 2006) at the age of 79, just shy of his 80th birthday.

He provided well for his family, working as a brick layer, and appeared to possess an exemplary work ethic.  They never did without food, clothing, shelter, and heat, as he brought a decent paycheck home all the time I knew him.

He seemed a tortured soul though, plagued with alcoholism up into the mid 1970s, and then heart problems for the last decade of his life.

However, he became quite health-conscious in his final years, lifting weights, biking, and skiing.  In fact, he’d occasionally ask my advice on what he should eat or avoid, to keep his cholesterol down.  I remember one conversation where, in a fit of frustration over all the dietary details he had to keep track of, he declared, “I might as well eat just like a dog; the same food, from the same bowl, at the same time, every day.”  :-)

He really tried to improve his health at the end, and though his efforts were likely too little and too late to have maximal effect, he did at least, make life expectancy.

Hopefully now, he enjoys the peace in death that he appeared never to find in life.  Take care, Jack. Hopefully next time around, things will be much easier for you.
