At 67 degrees this afternoon and partly sunny, I decided to fire up the Cub and cut the lawn for the first time this year. This took around an hour and a half, and the grass probably didn’t need cutting yet in most places. But I want to stay ahead of the dandelions this year, which are already sticking their bright yellow blooms up through the grass. Well, as long as I get them before they go to seed, they’ll be kept at bay.
I also started the gas-powered weed whacker as well as the chain saw to make sure they’re in good repair before prime season gets here. Both worked great; a tribute to their manufacturer, John Deere. I bought the chain saw last year, and the weed whacker in 2005 (I think). No complaints. I did go for the commercial grade of these tools, as they’re much better constructed than those for residential use. Professional quality apparatus like these cost more to be sure. But to me, the little extra money is worth the aggravation saved by avoiding the numerous breakdowns and failed starts of the home variety of tools.
Finally, I took the chain saw around front and trimmed some low, dead branches on the green spruce tree there. Perhaps now, I won’t hit my head when next I ride through there on the mower, and I’ll avoid scratching my glasses on their needles as well.
