Another Warmest Day: 2009-04-27

Monday, April 27th, 2009

The temperature here today rose to 89 degrees, making today the warmest day of 2009 so far. All day we saw clear blue skies and bright sunshine.

Too hot to qualify this day as a pavilion day. So I stayed up here and posted more to a new mailing list I joined the other day. The list is called Blind Chit Chat, and it has over 150 seemingly well-educated, real-world people, who are highly intelligent. So far, I’ve enjoyed reading their posts and offering some of my own. I’ll tell them of my blogs shortly.

I also journaled for an hour this evening.

Tomorrow, I’m going to cook that pork roast I bought at Wal Mart this past Friday; I need to get it eaten before leaving for Philly this weekend.

Journaling Tonight

Monday, April 27th, 2009

With Mom at the hospital tonight, I have the whole house to myself. So I walked down to her chair in the living room with my Victor Reader Stream, and talked into it for an hour. I brainstormed about the days I lived on Mellon Street in Pittsburgh between 1983-04-01 and 1984-05-31. Those entries will be posted here when I get around to transcribing my audio journals. That will happen after I finish uploading all the personal email I’vw written through the years.

Mom’s Okay

Monday, April 27th, 2009

They checked her blood and examined her at Tyrone Hospital during the past couple hours. They feel that her blood is thin enough and that she probably did not have a mini stroke. She’ll likely be able to come home tomorrow.

Mom’s Mini Stroke?

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Change of plans. Now they’re taking Mom to Tyrone Hospital instead of Mercy. They think she might have had a mini stroke and so they’re canceling her toe amputation, which had been scheduled for tomorrow. This will be postponed until after they solve her speech issues.

At the moment though, she’s speaking just fine; I just got off the phone with her and she sounds good.

Mom’s Speech Problems

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Friends,

Mom just called me. She’s at Dr Mextorf’s office right now, and is being picked up there by ambulance and taken to Mercy Hospital in Altoona.

Apparently, she was having trouble speaking last night to a friend on the phone — forgetting words, getting words mixed up and such. So she went to her doctor today to ask him about it. He said he didn’t want her driving until they could get to the bottom of her symptoms. To that end, he’s sending her to the hospital.

She’s going to Mercy because that’s where she’s scheduled for foot surgery tomorrow; she’s getting a toe amputated, and her doctor felt that they could also figure out what’s wrong with her speech there as well.

She’s in danger of having a stroke because, in preps for her foot surgery, they’ve taken her off her daily dose of warfarin so she doesn’t bleed too much during the operation. But her blood might be thickening as a result and causing the problems with her speech.

She was driving a rental car today because her car is at the shop getting maintained. She has the keys for the rental car with her. But that car is at Mextorf’s office. This must be driven from there to here, and we’re still working the details of that. Somehow, whoever does this will have to get the keys from Mom. She’s going to see if the ambulance driver can drop the keys off here on the way to Mercy.

I’ll keep you posted on Mom’s progress.

Coping with New Blindness

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I was telling the blind chat group about [Emmy]‘s blindness and her problems coping with it as follows:

There’s no cure for   [Emmy] either. They removed both of her eyes over a decade ago. She’s working hard at accepting it. But like someone else here said, it’s going to take more time. I’ve advised her to read everything she can about coping with the hope that perhaps she’d stumble across a way of understanding this whole mess, that would push her toward greater acceptance of her situation. She doesn’t like reading much though, but I’m working on that with her too.  :-)
