Today’s Business: 2009-09-18

[Emmy]   and I ate Indian for lunch today at our favorite Indian eatery nearby.

We watched the last episode of Guiding Light this morning.  Though we weren’t very familiar with the characters or the story lines, we couldn’t help feeling sad about the show’s demise after 72 years.  Times are certainly changing, as in the 70s there were sixteen soap operas on network television; nowadays, there are only seven.  Due to more people working outside the home with no access to television and the soaps, as well as the proliferation of numerous other forms of entertainment from the Internet to reality TV, not as many folks watch the soap operas these days.  So the soap companies that originally sponsored these programs aren’t as eager to do this currently.  But the funds lasted long enough for Guiding Light for us to see Reva and Josh getting back together.  Hopefully, The Young and the Restless will continue for decades to come.

The usual TV today: The Young and the Restless, Dr. Phil, local news, NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, Larry King, and CNN’s AC 360.

Talked with   [Jack]   at around noon.  I told him that due to Mom’s medical circumstances that I probably would not be visiting him anytime soon.  He graciously understood.

We listened to the Penguins play their second pre season game on Internet radio tonight in Pittsburgh.  They lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4 to 3.  Oh well.  At least they still have four more chances to win in pre season play in the next week or two.

Ordered twelve more pairs of wax-cotton earplugs this evening, as I’d given my last two pairs to [Mentat] last week.  I’ve been very pleased with these plugs since 2004.  They’re quite comfortable, they stay in your ear all night, and they really dial down the  noise.  If I’d have had these while living in Philly, I might still be there today.  They do take some getting used to; a process that can take a few months.  But once you do, you’ll probably find that the effort was well worth the new found silence you get when wearing these earplugs.  For more details or to purchase, please visit the   Earplugs Online   website.

Sister Joanne is picking me up at the train stop on Sunday.  Then, we’re going to visit Mom at the nursing home.

Very sunny weather today, little wind, and the high temperatures reached the mid 70s here in Pittsburgh.
