Gutter Maintenance: 2009

12:30 PM: Cleaned the gutters this morning. Some of the spouting needed repair; it came loose, probably from some heavy ice last winter. That slowed me down a bit. But it’s fixed now, with screws that are thicker and longer than what was there before. Hopefully, it will hold better too.

Also noticed that a few of the gutter joints require re-caulking; the existing caulking is looking decrepit, and the joints do leak in a few well-known places; above the south porch steps and outside the bathroom window.  As soon as I get more caulk and the weather warms up again, I’ll fix these.

03:00 PM: Finished sealing all known leaking joints. I would have done this yesterday. But standing water in the gutters kept soaking the joints. So I had to want for this to evaporate enough to get dry joints for caulking. Once the caulk dries, I’ll reinstall the aluminum ice guards.

11:00 AM: Looks like the caulk dried nicely and providing a great seal on those previously leaky gutter joints. So I reinstalled the ice guards and put the ladder away; this project now finished for this year.

10:30 PM: The rains came this evening. But even under a steady drizzle, no rhythmic dripping on the bathroom window sill occurred. So the repairs have passed the acid test I’d say.
