Today’s Business: 2009-10-23

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

07:15 AM: I’m up.  About to prepare Mom’s meds and insulin, and put a fresh pot of decaf coffee on to brew.  I just love the smell of brewing coffee at this time of day.

09:15 AM: Talked with [Emmy].  I have much more energy when we talk in the morning.

10:00 AM: Picked up all roofing debris from the yard for the   Shed Roof Replacement Project

11:45 AM: Watched this week’s episode of  CBS’s 60 Minutes, and two episodes of NBC Nightly News from last week.

02:30 PM: On the   DJ Wedding Gig   this weekend, I checked out the computer I’ll be using tomorrow to play the music.  All is well.

05:00 PM: Sister JoJo stopped by a half-hour ago and just left.  We’re going shopping on Sunday.

05:15 PM: Dreary and dark gray today with high temperatures in the mid 60s.

05:30 PM: You know, some songs I can just listen too over and over and over and over.  Today, for the first time in a week or more, I pulled out the Sony MDR-7506 headphones and enjoyed some music from my DJ library; now up to 59,000 songs.  The repeated songs today were:

  • Snow   by   The Red Hot chili Peppers
  • Yellow Bird    by   The Arthur Lyman Group
  • Yellow Bird    by   Chris Isaak
  • White Gurl    by   E-40, Featuring Bun B, Pimp C of UGK, & Juelz Santana

05:50 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless.

07:15 PM: Leftover beef roast with carrots, potatoes, onions, and celery for supper.

07:20 PM: Figured out how to make WordPress 2.8.4 display 100 recent posts.  Click   here   for more details.

08:05 PM: Upgraded all blogs to WordPress 2.8.5.

09:30 PM: Talked with [Emmy].  We listened to a couple periods of the Penguins Vs. the Florida Panthers game. At the start of the third period, I believe the Pens were losing, 2 to 0.

10:00 PM: I’ll probably watch a little TV.  But I’ll not be out of bed very long.  I’m quite tired.  Good night, and I hope you sleep as well as I plan to.  :-)

Displaying More ‘Recent Posts’ Links

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I desired once again to increase the number of ‘Recent Posts’ links in my blogs’ sidebars. The default in WordPress 2.8.4 is 15 links but I wanted 100 to appear. These changes got erased that I had made in 2.7.1 when I upgraded to WordPress 2.8.  So, I’ve updated these instructions to account for the changes of location of the relevent code in 2.8.  You can see the original instructions for 2.7.1 by clicking here.  I’ve included the revised instructions for 2.8.4 below:

File to change: $WP_ROOT/wp-inclues/default-wigits.php.  Note that this is a different file than when I did this before for WordPress 2.7.1.

Find the Wp_Widget_Recent_Posts() routine in the file given above.  In WordPress 2.8.4 this function should start at line 513 if you’ve not changed the file from what’s contained in the official 2.8.4 release code.

Modify the following code snippet at lines 542 and 543 from…

else if ( $number > 15 )
$number = 15;

to

else if ( $number > 100 )
$number = 100;

Don’t forget to upload your modified file and to change the count of links to display in the admin pages of the “Recent Posts” widget for your WordPress site.

I’ve verified that these changes work for WordPress 2.8.4 and 2.8.5.

Enjoy.

Mom’s Status: 2009-10-23

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

07:35 AM: Blood sugar: 141. No insulin given right now.  Waiting until she eats later to dispense it.

08:00 AM: Sister JoJo stopped by for a few minutes to say hello.

08:30 AM: Mom ate three slices of toast and margarine along with a small cup of coffee with half and half, and around four ounces of orange juice.  Covered with 12 units insulin.

12:15 PM: Four more bottles of fast-acting insulin arrived today.  Looks like we’ll have enough until early December for Mom now.

01:15 PM: Home nursing visited.  They say that the sore on Mom’s left foot looks okay so far.  It’s a bit red but when compressed and released, the red color returns; a sign of good circulation.  Plus, there’s no sign of infection.

01:33 PM: Blood sugar: 189.  Covered with 12 units insulin.  She says she’ll eat lunch later.

02:48 PM: She ate peaches and Ritz crackers.  Estimated carbs: 20 grams.  Covered with 8 units insulin.

04:35 PM: Blood sugar: 75, and Mom has the shakes.  I gave her too much insulin for the carbs she ate before.  Instead of three grams per unit insulin, we’ll try five next time.

05:10 PM: The shakes have disappeared.  She had 8 Oz. of orange juice, some crackers, and peanut butter.  I’ll be a little less aggressive with the insulin from now on, although we still have to be somewhat aggressive to keep her readings under 150.   The challenge: to get as near to the precise amount of insulin required to correctly cover the food she eats, without giving too much.  That’s tough.

09:50 PM: Blood sugar: 164.  Covered with 4 units insulin.  She also ate a few Ritz crackers.
