Mom’s Status: 2009-10-29

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

07:15 AM: Blood sugar: 257.  She ate a ham sandwich, made with a hamburger bun earlier.  Covered with 14 units insulin.

11:30 AM: Blood sugar: 77.  She had more of the Chinese food for lunch.  Covered with 12 units insulin.

05:00 PM:  Mom ate a ham barbecue sandwich but forgot to take her blood sugar reading.  So, guessing, we’re covering with 12 units insulin.

05:30 PM: Mom’s left foot hurts and sister Mary Ann is checking out a large lump on the upper part of Mom’s left foot, just below the ankle.  The heal hurts as well.

06:30 PM:  We’re calling 911 to take Mom to the hospital; she cannot put weight on either foot now because it’s possible that she has charcot syndrome in the left foot as well.  So we wish not to risk damaging the bones in that foot by having her walk on it.

07:30 PM: I rode in the ambulance with Mom to Altoona hospital and am here in the ER with her now.  She’s calmer but still worried.

07:45 PM: X-rays taken but nothing definitively wrong is showing.  So the doctor recommends a CT scan.

10:30 PM: CT scan taken and the doctor is sharing preliminary results.  She says that something out of place is showing but since her specialty is not orthopedics, she wants to admit Mom and then have a specialist look over the scans and x-rays tomorrow.  So, we’re waiting for Mom to be placed in a room.

11:30 PM: Still not admitted yet.  We’re still here in the ER.  We are getting quite tired however so we’ll have to leave in a half hour or so if Mom has not yet been admitted.  Mom is sleeping on and off and rather groggy over all; probably because she ate a snack an hour or so ago but we have no insulin to give her. The nurses aren’t available to do this because some sort of trauma situation arose around 9:00 PM that’s kept most of the staff busy for the past couple hours.

12:00 AM: Heading home with sister Mary Ann.  She’s spending the night at Mom’s house.  Mom is still in the ER, and the hospitalist has not yet arrived to talk to us.  So, we left instructions with the ER doctor about Mom’s meds and insulin.  Hopefully, they’ll dispense everything correctly overnight.  I’ll check back with them in the morning.

12:30 AM: Mom had an x-ray and a CT scan.  Nothing definite shown.  So they admitted her to the hospital so that she can be seen later today by the orthopedics doctors.

Log

07:30 AM:  I’m up.  Looks like rain fell a lot overnight, as glistening roads, loud tires of cars riding on them, and dark skies greeted me this morning.  Probably won’t get much done outside today therefore.

10:53 AM: Revised the following   Love Quest   post(s):

12:25 PM: Nap time!

02:50 PM: A short-duration power outage occurred; another one in the ongoing series of outages.   I’m documenting this problem   here.

05:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless, and ate Chinese cashew chicken for dinner.  Yun!

06:30 PM: Worked the   Christmas Lighting, 2009 project

08:15 PM: Watched the 2009-10-14 episode of Dr. Phil.

10:00 PM: Talked with [Emmy] and we listened to some of the Penguins game.  They won, 6 to 1.

10:50 PM: I’m off to bed.  See you tomorrow.

Ongoing Power Outages

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Over the past year or two, we’ve experienced numerous short-duration power outages.  One destroyed my wireless router and another triggered a hard drive failure in a computer here in the office.  I’ve reported three of these two- to five-second power failures to Penelec, our electricity company.  So far, they’ve not fixed the problem. A technician came by last year when I first called in the issue and said that he talked to the neighbors and verified that they too experienced the outages. However, he was not optimistic about correcting this anytime soon due to its intermittent nature.

From now on, I’ll use this post to detail our progress in bringing this issue to closure, and hope that this can be resolved quickly.

07:30 AM: Blood sugar: 146.  Covered with 10 units insulin. She ate a small bowl of canned peaches too.

12:10 PM: Blood sugar: 143.  Covered with 12 units insulin. She’s going to have some apple sauce along with tuna salad for lunch.

12:30 PM: Her endocrinologist released Mom as a patient. He insisted on seeing her in person rather than doing a telephone consultation, which we need right now so that Mom doesn’t have to make needless trips out of the house.  Also, his office was slow at calling us back when her blood sugar went above 250 (took them two or more days), and we called them per their instructions.  Finally, his recommended insulin dosing failed to keep Mom’s sugar readings under 150. In fact, following his routines consistently gave readings in the 200s and 300s.  So, we’re just going to have her PCP manage her diabetes.  Under his care, the readings were much better.

04:34 PM: Blood sugar: 155.  Covered this and a Chinese dinner she’s about to have with 18 units insulin.

10:40 PM: Blood sugar: 200.  Covered with 12 units insulin; she was eating a peanut butter sandwich just after the reading was taken.

09:00 AM: I’m up.  Slept in this morning due to the late night I had the night before last.  Hopefully, I’m caught up on sleep now.

11:00 AM: Completed the   Gutter Maintenance Project   for this year.

12:00 PM: Worked the  Christmas Lighting, 2009   project.

02:00 PM: Salmon with lemon pepper and garlic salt for lunch, along with, um, shall we call it a generous portion, of Halloween candy for dessert.

04:45 PM: Went on   a little shopping trip to Lowe’s   to get some plywood for a temporary walkway for Mom, for the   Wheelchair Ramp Project.

06:30 PM:  Just woke up from an hour plus nap.  *Yawn*  Now I’m ready to take on the evening.

07:50 PM: Disabled WordPress post revisions   once again on all of my blogs.  Apparently, this functionality became active again in the WordPress version upgrades I’ve done since last March.  But it’s disabled once more and any saved revisions have beeen removed from the databases.

09:28 PM: Watched today’s episode of  The Young and the Restless.

10:30 PM: Talked with [Emmy].

10:45 PM: Headed for bed now.  Good night.

Shopping Trip to Lowe’s

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Since we won’t be able to lay any concrete until next spring for a sidewalk, as needed in the  Wheelchair Ramp Project, we’re putting down plywood in the meantime, to give Mom a smooth surface to wheel over until the permanent ramp and sidewalk are installed.  So, brother-in-law Richard and I drove up to Lowe’s this afternoon and purchased the following:

  • 4′ X 8′ X 3/4” outdoor plywood (4 sheets)
  • Stake reflectors (8)
  • Misc wood pieces (1)

Total cost: $146.85

Disabling Post Revisions in WordPress 2.8.5

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I discovered that WordPress was again saving every revision of every post, though I had disabled this feature back in March.  Click   here   for more details.  But apparently, in one or more of the many software releases since then, somehow saving these revisions became enabled once more. So I turned off this feature by adding the following lines of code to the wp-config.php file for each of my blogs:

// Disable post revisions.
define(’WP_POST_REVISIONS’, false);

I also changed line 576 in the wp-settings.php file from

$default_constants = array( ‘WP_POST_REVISIONS’ => true );

to

$default_constants = array( ‘WP_POST_REVISIONS’ => false );

Also note that the line number has changed since March from 495 to 576.

Then I deleted all the revisions that had been saved to this point from each blog database by executing the following SQL statement:

DELETE FROM wp_posts WHERE post_type = “revision”;

This query resulted in the deletion of over 900 rows from the   Tom’s Diary   blog database, 327 rows from the   Tom’s Love Quest   blog, and 40 rows from the   Tom’s Views   blog database.

I then logged out and back into each site’s admin id and verified that the revisions saved thus far no longer appear on the Edit Post screen. The deletion apparently worked.   These instructions have been verified to work with WordPress 2.8.5.

That’s all.

Mom’s Status: 2009-10-27

08:00 AM: Blood sugar: 190.  Covered with 12 units insulin to account for her breakfast.

11:00 AM: We talked with her endocrinologist’s office.  They insist that the doctor must see Mom in person.  His assistants tell me that the doctor will not do a telephone consultation, and this is in spite of relating Mom’s difficulties getting in and out of her house.  Due to these hardships, we must minimize her trips out until she can put weight on her bad foot again.

11:30 AM: Again, Mom campaigned to reduce her daily sugar testing to twice a day from four times a day.  Again, I explained that unless she virtually eliminates carbs from her diet, that twice a day would just not be enough to assure that she would not experience these high blood-sugar spikes.  She complained about having to pay $167 for a 45-day supply of test strips, and I told her that this is not such a high price if it means avoiding the loss of her feet or vision to the deteriorating effects of frequently high blood sugar values.  She reluctantly agreed.  But I wonder when we’ll have this argument again.  It seems to come up every couple weeks.

12:50 PM: Mom doesn’t want to see the endocrinologist.  We’re cancelling the appointment.

12:53 PM: Her PCP does not need to see Mom until her foot is better.  That will save us a trip to his office.

01:10 PM: Blood sugar: 162. Covered with 12 units insulin. She also ate a can of chicken noodle soup and some crackers.

06:30 PM: Blood sugar: 183. Covered with 12 units insulin.

10:45 PM: Blood sugar: 193.  Covered with 12 units insulin.
