11:00 AM: Greetings.  I’m up.  Slept a long time today although [Emmy] and I both woke up for an hour at around 3:00 AM; probably because we ate late at Chili’s last night.  But at any rate, I’m refreshed and ready to tackle another today, which by the way looks gorgeous; bright sunshine with temps at 28 degrees at present.

12:30 PM: Blogged for the past hour, putting together this posts, as well as mom’s status for today.  Now, I’m working the   DJ Gig: 2009-12-31   effort.  I hope to add at least five more CDs to the Tommy’s Tunes music library.

03:30 PM: Watched yesterday’s and today’s episode of    The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

06:00 PM: Sister Mary Ann just called to say that she’s taking me out for lunch tomorrow for my birthday.  It’ll be great getting out a bit, although [Emmy] says she’ll stay here and let my sister and I have some alone time.

09:55 PM: We listened to the Penguins play the Flyers throughout the evening tonight.  The Pens beat the Flyers, 3 to 2.

10:10 PM: Upgraded from Winamp 5.56 to Winamp 5.57.  For more details, click     here.

11:15 PM: Posted the list of today’s revised posts for my blogs.   Click   here   for details.

01:30 AM: Listened to the iPod for an hour or so.  Nothing ear-catching to report today.

01:35 AM: And so ends another day.  So I’m off to the bedroom.  Enjoy your early-morning, and I’ll catch you here later on.

    Upgraded to Winamp 5.57

    Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The latest version (5.57) of Winamp became available sometime today.  I just downloaded and applied the music player software to this computer.  Hopefully, this new version will not introduce any problems with the rest of the importations I have to finish for the   DJ Gig: 2009-12-31   project.  I’ve rarely experienced any troubles with Winamp upgrades.  So I’m confident that this one will go as smoothly as the rest I’ve done since 2002.  I’ll play with it here for a week or so before applying it to my laptop DJ computers.

Right off the bat, I’ve noticed the following changes / improvements:

    • Searches in the media library run much faster.  What used to take three to five seconds to finish, now consistently completes in around one-half of a second.   I’m quite eager to try 5.57 on my Dell Inspiron laptop, on which media library searches have traditionally taken upwards of thirty seconds to finish.
    • The rescanning feature of the media library happens more quickly.  The first part of the rescan operation, which involved much disk activity in prior versions, appears to have been streamlined in the latest version; much less disk access was noted.

Problems either still persisting, or discovered fo the first time in this, latest Winamp release are:

    • Winamp still won’t play Promo Only’s Express Audio DFF files (m4a files).
    • Winamp still does not play ANR Wideband Audio files (3gp) that one creates with the Victor Reader Stream device.
    • Winamp appears to leave the current audio file you’re playing open, even when you pause or stop it.  Apparently, it does not close the file until either you exit Winamp entirely, or play another file.  Normally, this would not be an issue.  However, when you use the View File Info window to edit its tags, Winamp appears to open the file for exclusive access, and keeps it open in that mode until you move to another file.  This causes some of my batch processes to fail that I run immediately after editing a file in Winamp.
