08:45 AM: I’m up.

10:50 AM: Added more categories to several posts.

12:10 PM: Added the   Today’s Business: 2008-12-26   post to this, the   Tom’s Diary   blog.

12:40 PM: Completed this week’s grocery and medicine inventory and created a list of items that we need to buy during our next shopping trip.

01:25 PM: In today’s mail, we received the following items:

  • Mom’s diabetic test strips (200 strips)
  • Credit card offer (1)
  • Credit card bill (1)
  • Ambutech catalog for  [Emmy]

03:45 PM: Wrote 600 words to an upcoming post, about how I learned why vacuum tubes glow blue, and the joys, difficulties, and dangers I endured to get that answer.  But now, it’s time for a little nap.  See you a bit later

05:00 Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

09:30 PM: Cooked scrambled eggs seasoned with dill weed, along with rye toast and butter for our supper.  Yum.   Captain Kirk, in the movie,  Star Trek: Generations, knew of the wonderful tastes of using dill weed to add flavor to eggs.  It really tasted good, even if I do say so myself.  In fact, it was this movie where I learned to season with dill weed; after watching my DVD of it twenty times, the eggs-and-dill combination is permanently ingrained in my memory.

10:20 PM: Worked on several little home maintenance projects, described   here

10:50 PM: The last of the four loads of laundry is washing right now.  Once this is dried, all pending laundry will be done.

10:55 PM: Just scheduled our next shopping trip with Debbie on Wednesday, 2009-12-30, in the early afternoon.  Good thing because my list is again getting long.  :-)

12:57 AM: Just posted the list of added or revised documents for today, in this, the   Tom’s Diary   blog,   here

01:00 AM: All pending laundry is now washed, dried, folded, and put away; in short, it’s done!

01:10 AM: Well, I’m getting sleepy, and it’s another busy day tomorrow.  So I’d best get to bed.  Take care.  I’ll be back in a little while.

    Home Repair Bits: 2009-12-28

    Monday, December 28th, 2009

Investigated reduced pressure on kitchen sink faucet.  Looks like our Brita water filter is hopelessly clogged.  I cleaned the screens to no avail, and these things don’t disassemble very much.  At several years old, it’s probably time to replace the unit anyhow.  I might play with the old unit for a bit and see if there’s a way to take it apart without hopelessly damaging it; I have my doubts however.

The shameful thing about this is that I just replaced the cartridge a couple weeks ago, which means that it probably still has 80 or so gallons of filtration capacity left.  But unless I can find a Brita unit that takes this same cartridge, that capacity won’t be utilized.  Wasted money.  Hopefully, the stores around here still carry units that accept this type of cartridge.  If not, then, oh well.  Darn.

Then, I Repaired a kitchen cupboard door that wouldn’t stay latched.  Apparently, Mom or someone ran into the protruding hook, mounted on the door itself.  This hook mates with a spring-loaded catch on the door frame.  But with the hook bent, proper latching would not occur.  To fix, I straightened the hook with bare fingers, fearing that any tools would break it off.  It straightened out okay and the door now closes properly.

Also, I changed the batteries in the remote outdoor sensor for my Accu-Rite thermometer, to fix a problem of erroneous temperature readings frequently happening.  The new cells seem to have fixed this issue.

Finally, Mom requested a brighter bulb be installed in her reading lamp in the sitting room.  I had an old-but-still-good CFL lamp in the basement, which barely fit the lamp actually.  Removing the lamp’s harp first was the only way to get the bulb to screw into the socket.  But I managed it and she’s quite pleased with how much better she can read with the new light source.

    Pending Appointments And Issues

    1. Look for more diabetic test strips to arrive here during the next couple days.  RECEIVED TODAY.
    2. Friday, 2010-01-15 @ 1:30 PM: Appointment with her PCP.
    3. Thursday, 2010-02-04 @ 11:30 AM: Appointment with orthopedist for a quarterly checkup on the progress of healing of her charcot foot.

    Log

09:15 AM: Dispensed Mom’s morning meds.

09:20 AM: Blood sugar: 199.  Covered with 14 units of log insulin.

11:40 AM: Mom just fell in the kitchen.  She called me for help, as she was unable to, without some pillows, lift herself back into the wheel chair.  I got her the pillows from the couch in the sitting room.  But by the time I returned to the kitchen with them, she had crawled into the living room, saying that she’d be better able to get up there, since that room is carpeted.  Once there, she had me bring the wheel chair in, and then she used a pillow from the love seat to kneel upon while getting to her feet.  After a minute or two, she was back in her wheel chair.  No injuries were apparent.

01:05 PM: Dispensed Mom’s lunch-time meds.  She says however, that she’ll take them later because at present, her stomach is unsettled.

01:30 PM: Received the 200 diabetic test strips we’ve been waiting for.  That should be enough for the next 50 days.

02:40 PM: Blood sugar: 158.   Covered this and her lunch with 14 units of log insulin.

05:00 PM: Dispensed Mom’s evening meds.

09:10 PM: Dispensed Mom’s bedtime meds.

10:45 PM: Blood sugar: 231.  Covered with 15 units of log insulin.

10:50 PM: For the next few days, I’m going to raise Mom’s long-acting insulin doses from 24 to 30 units, and see if we can’t get better readings; too many of them are above 150 currently.  This change would make her daily intake of the N type of insulin 60 units, which is up from the current value of 48 units.
