Movie: It’s Complicated

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

10:05 PM: I’m back.  Excellent movie.  I’d rate it a 9.5 out of 10.  It was genuinely funny; the actors weren’t obviously-trying to be funny.  They just were funny.  Steve Martin’s character, though not the protagonist, still played a humorously central role. But I enjoy him more when he’s the main star, like he was in LA Story and Parenthood.  Still though, in this one, he displayed some pretty amusing antics; especially when he happens to glimpse Alec Baldwin’s bare butt.  :-)   See the movie, and you’ll get what I mean.

We had a very considerate audience as well; it was small — probably less then 15 of us in the whole theater.

Plus, it appears that they’ve replaced the 70mm film projectors with digital projection television.  I realized it right away when I did not see the screen flicker that’s been so customary in movie theaters to this point.  Nor did I hear that familiar sound of 24 clicks-per-second coming from the projection booth.  Nor did I see any white flashes; the signs of a film that’s getting pretty worn out.  The picture was quite bright and clear, and the sound was robust and life-like, although they’ve had the sound part down pretty good, even when showing films.

I enjoyed the popcorn as well, but without butter.  Instead, the theater provided  a ranch flavor seasoning which was quite delicious.

    Excess Refined Sugar When…

    Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

When I’ve observed the following symptoms in myself, careful inspection of my recent diet habits reveals that I’ve consumed lots of added sugar and other refined carbohydrates over a period of several days to a couple weeks:

    • I feel hungry more often and more intensely besides.
    • I crave sugary foods.  The more I’m eating, the more I want.
    • So as a result, I often overeat when I’ve been consuming lots of sugar.
    • Then, I gain weight.
    • Blood triglyceride values rise sharply.
    • So does my LDL cholesterol.
    • Mosquitoes bite me more.
    • More canker sores and cavities can appear.
    • Irritants bother me a whole lot more.
    • I complain and gripe  more.
    • I feel at least a little tired throughout most days.
    • Periods of full awareness become quite short and infrequent.
    • Ability to concentrate and focus weakens.
    • I take more naps.
    • I experience more broken sleep at night.
    • I acquire nervous habits like picking my fingers.
    • I feel more depressed than usual.
    • I remember more of my dreams, which tend to be stranger and more unsettling than is typical.
    • I get more colds.

You may have experienced some of these, or perhaps you’ve seen other symptoms not listed here, develop in you.  But if you’re King Sugarholic like me, and have struggled to control your weight as I have, I think you’ll find that if you give up the added sugar, these problems will either disappear or become way less pronounced.  Hey, it’s worth a shot isn’t it?  Rather than spending all the time and money to treat each of these problems separately, wouldn’t it be wonderful to make just one fundamental change to the diet, and correct them all?  I believe that omitting added sugar can achieve this though admittedly, I’ve not been able to consistently stay away from it, because I like it way too much.   :-)   But one of these new years, the New Years resolution I make every year to swear off of all refined carbs just may take hold, like when I gave up snuff in 1986 and when I totally eliminated all alcohol consumption in 2004.  We’ll see.

    Take care.

    1. Waiting on the orthopedist’s office to call us back, regarding setup of Mom’s physical therapy.
    2. Watch for the other part of the Novolog insulin shipment; part one was  received today.  RECEIVED.

09:00 AM: Dispensed Mom’s morning meds, including the 40 units of N insulin, as well as a double dose (80 MG) of furosemide.  The edema hasn’t gotten any worse.  But there’s no improvement either.  Hopefully, since she’s had extra doses yesterday and today, we’ll start to see her swelling go down soon.

09:05 AM: Blood sugar: 242.  Covered with 16 units of log insulin.

10:45 AM: I dispensed 17 units of log insulin, and she’ll take it at her lunch outing with Aunt Joan at around 11:30 AM.

11:00 AM: Mom lost 6 pounds today.  Apparently the double dose of the water pill this morning is working.  We’ll trim it back to the prescribed dose once she loses a few more pounds.

01:00 PM: Dispensed Mom’s lunch time meds.

05:45 PM: Dispensed Mom’s evening meds.

05:50 PM: Blood sugar: 189.  Covered with 12 units of log insulin.

09:55 PM: We all went out to a movie tonight.  Mom enjoyed herself and it was good for the two of us to get out of here for a bit.

10:00 PM: Blood sugar: 162.  Covered with 10 units of log insulin.

    10:05 PM: Dispensed Mom’s night-time meds.
