The River’s Up Again: 2010-01-25
10:00 AM: With the rain so steady over the past couple days and the temperatures above freezing making all that accumulated snow and ice melt, I thought we might see some flooding, and yes, this morning we did. Sister Jojo called a while ago, warning of rising waters in the back yard. So I went out to have a look, and sure enough; the river, which normally runs a couple hundred feet down the yard from my pavilion, has way overflowed its banks. Now, several inches of water cover the floor of the pavilion, and the edge of the river is now located about three quarters up the yard, midway between the pavilion and the shed.
The reminds me of the 2004 flood. Hopefully though, the water won’t come up to the back of the house here, as it did back then.
I’m not sure if the river is still rising or on its way back down. So I’ll check on it throughout the day, and if it continues westward and meets our east driveway, I’ll begin moving our things off the basement floor. Stand by.
02:30 PM: The river has retreated; it’s now well below the pavilion once again, and through it all, our cellar remained dry. *Phew!*
Unfortunately, the neighbors down back didn’t fare so well; their house still sits in the middle of what looks like a gigantic water puddle, though the sun is now shining. Hopefully though, they didn’t get too much water in their basement, because the last time this happened nearly six years ago, he talked passionately about leaving. Well, if they get flooded today, he just might. But I hope not though, because they are very good neighbors. So, not only would losing them sadden me, but I’d worry over who might move in. Their house is small and located close to the river; factors that make it very difficult to sell, except for the very lowest price. However, I’ll not say anymore about that; I trust you get the idea why i might be concerned.
