09:00 AM: I’m up. My weight is unchanged from yesterday.  It’s still  177.0 Lbs.  I lost 0.5 pounds in February, which gives me a total loss for the year of 6.5 pounds.  Let’s see if we can’t get an improved weight loss in March.  This month, my hunger pangs and cravings, along with my feeble willpower to resist them caused me to actually gain weight over the past couple weeks.  Plus, I’ve seriously cut back on the green tea to reduce the headaches I was experiencing.  That may be one reason why the food cravings were so overpowering.  Well, it’s a new month tomorrow, and a clean slate.  Maybe I can do better.

10:50 AM: Read the final chapters of the book:  The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives   by Leonard Mlodinow.

02:30 PM: Added the   Obesity   category to the   Tom’s Love Quest   blog.  In it, I placed posts that talk about the impact of heaviness on my love quest and how my preferences were shaped regarding it.

04:55 PM: Added a few hundred words to the    NLS DTB Player   post, now that I’ve had a few days to play with the new unit.  I know so much more about it now than the day I first got mine.

05:00 PM: Started readng the book:  Sway: The Irresistible Pull Of Irrational Behavior

05:40 PM: We ran out to Pizza Pronto and got some steak subs for supper.  Yum, but, oh no!   :-)

06:30 PM: Watched WPXI TV channel 11 local news.  Much mention was made of the Canada – USA hockey game played today in the winter Olympics.  This is the closing day of the Olympics, and the Canadians won.  It’s hard to be disappointed though since some of the players on team Canada also play for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

10:40 PM: Read some more of the book:  Sway: The Irresistible Pull Of Irrational Behavior

11:45 PM: Bed time.  See you tomorrow.

12:00 PM: Cooked seven eggs for breakfast for   [Emmy]  and I.

01:30 PM; Created the    Smart Calcium, The New Rave   piece.

    01:35 PM: Nap time.

03:05 PM: I’m back up again.  We’re having salmon and soup for supper later.

05:15 PM: Read more of the book:  The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives    by Leonard Mlodinow.

06:00 PM: Finished supper.  This cold has me wiped out.  So I’m taking another nap.

07:45 PM: I’m up once more.

10:30 PM: Programmed several stations into the IRIS Internet WebRadio for   [Emmy].  These are not included in the list of available stations for this unit.  So I found URLs for them on iTunes,  AOL Radio, ShoutCAST, and a couple of them, I went to the station’s  Listen Live link,  and capture the stream URL, using the URL Snooper  program.  It took a bit of trial and error because some of the streams, while they played nicely in Winamp, they caused errors on the IRIS WebRadio.  However, I found the following streams to be compatible with the IRIS, though they may not play on your computer unless you paste them into Wimamp and access them from there:

11:00 PM:  Took the weekly system backups.  Details   here.

12:15 AM: Heading to bed now, to head off the worst symptoms of this cold.   Take care, and see you later.

    Weekly Backups: 2010-02-27

    Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Weekly backups of all my blog sites completed. Total data amount backed up: 66.2 MB, which includes all databases, site code, static pages, and log files. That’s a decrease of 3.1 MB, from 69.3 MB last week. They zipped up some log files last week on the hosting provider’s computers, which is why we have less data this week.

    Smart Calcium, The New Rave

    Saturday, February 27th, 2010

01:30 PM; Listened to an info-mercial on KQV radio about a new calcium supplement that promises to reverse bone loss as well as de-calcify the arteries and improve everything from mood, to blood pressure, to sleep patterns in the process.  As per usual with these sorts of advertisements, they made many lofty claims but provided little direct evidence to back them up.

When I voiced this skepticism to   [Emmy],  she asked how one distinguishes a legitimately healthful product from snake oil.  I thought about this for a bit, and then told her that anecdotal testimonials aren’t good enough to make the product tried-and-true.  Just because two, or five, or even a hundred people say it worked for them, doesn’t mean that it will work for her, or that she even needs this.

In my “old” middle age, I’ve learned that unless you hear about the product on the major news sources, it’s probably no good.  Either that, or it’s too new to risk your health on.  Why?  Because if they invented a pill that did all that this one’s supposed to do, the network news reporters would be all over it, clamoring to be the first ones to get out the good news.  So far, that has not happened for this   smart calcium  supplement.

Also, I suggested: Look for numerous, independent studies that corroborate the claims.  If you can’t find any, then ads like this may just be the same sort of hoopla that enticed millions to take garlic and vitamin E supplements back in the early 1990s to reduce arterial diseases, which by the way was to no avail.  Of course now, it’s clear that there is in fact, no link between popping garlic pills and lower rates of heart attacks.   But back then, taking them was all the rage.  I advised her not to get caught up in this mob-hysteria because it would likely lead her to a disappointing place; either the supplement would not work at all, or it could wreck  her health.  I hope she understands.
