Log

03:00 AM: Daylight savings time took effect just now.

07:15 AM: I’m up. My weight stayed the same as yesterday, at 175.0 Lbs.    See   here for a summary of the progress on this goal so far in 2010.

08:00 AM: Filled Mom’s med boxes for the next three weeks.

08:15 AM: Weather report: This morning is still cloudy with occasional showers.  But the water has receded to below the pavilion once again.  Looks like the river crested sometime during the night, and fortunately, the water edge got no closer than about half-way between the pavilion and shed.  About an inch of water accumulated in the sump pump basin; not enough to turn it on however.  The rest of the basement remained dry. So, since we have everything up off of the floor down there, we’ll probably scrub the floor, once we’re sure that the river is well-contained once again along its usual banks.

10:00 PM:  Read more of the  Team of Rivals   book.

11:00 AM: Started a pork roast and vegetables to cooking, which should be ready to eat at 7:00 PM this evening.

12:55 PM: Heard from  [Jack], and we discussed our decision not to attend camp Beacon Lodge this year.  Neither [Jack], [Emmy], nor myself, will go this year.

01:00 PM: Created audio journal episode   AJE-2010-03-14-11-21,   in regards several various topics.

01:20 PM: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 just showed up in the update list.  I’m applying it to Pink’s computer.  Hopefully, this will finish installing before she gets here to pick up her machine.

03:30 PM: Worked the   Pink’s PC Problems: 2010-03-10   project.  Pink just picked up her computer and was happy that it’s working well once again.

03:45 PM: I let [Mentat] know that I’ll definitely not be attending camp this year.  Click   here for details.  Nap time.

04:50 PM: I’m up once more, listening to the Penguins pre-game show.

05:05 PM: Listening to the hockey game with   [Emmy].

07:45 PM: The Pens won, 2 to 1.  Getting back to reading the   Team of Rivals   book.

08:50 PM: Posted the   Today’s Business: 1985-07-12   and   Book: Different Seasons   pieces.

10:00 PM: Read some of the    Call of the Wild   book.

12:00 AM: Posted the   Today’s Business: 2009-05-01,   Today’s Business: 2009-05-02,   and   Today’s Business: 2009-05-03    pieces.

12:20 AM: Another dreary day is done, and I am truly tickled that we weren’t flooded.  I can’t imagine the pain of experiencing another 2004-style flood in 2010 - so soon after 2004.  After all, I only just last year finished completely cleaning up after the last water incursion in our basement.  I might have become a little flustered if the same thing happened again this past weekend.  But it didn’t.  So at least for now, I’ll maintain my composure.  :-)   Good night.

    Book: Call Of The Wild

    Sunday, March 14th, 2010

09:25 PM: Began the book   Call of the Wild   from 1903, by  Jack London, because I need a break from the Team of Rivals history book I’ve been studying for nearly two weeks now.  So I thought I’d read something light and short, but that still qualifies as classic American literature. This book should fill the bill on all counts.

I owned a paperback version of this work back in the mid 1980s, that I’d purchased from the Pitt book store, full-well intending to read it then.  In fact, spurred by the fantasy of becoming deeply knowledgeable regarding all classic American literature, I bought many books whose pages turned yellow at my Craig St. apartment, without me ever having glanced them.  I’m reminded of how much of a procrastinator I was in my twenties.  But I really did have valid reasons for not reading this back then.  Due to the small print of that particular edition, and my other academic responsibilities in college at that time, I never found time to open it, except to view the many black and white  dog pictures inside, which were really quite good.

However, now, finally, this book shall be read.  :-)

    Definitely No Camp: 2010

    Sunday, March 14th, 2010

[Mentat asked if I'd be gong to camp this year of 2010.  I responded as follows:]

    Dear   [Mentat],

Well,   [Jack]   is skipping out this year to conserve money for the foot parties.  Further, I think he’s disenchanted with camp, like me.  They’ve cut out so much since I resumed attending in 1995, that there are very few activities available anymore that I enjoy.  They don’t do the ten- or twenty-mile hikes anymore, and this year, they’ve shortened the sessions by a day (to ten days, down from  eleven), and omitted a session besides.  This means that our session will likely be very crowded, and with the faulty PA system there, I don’t relish the dining room noise at mealtimes when so many campers attend.  It’s hard to hear announcements about the activities.

So nope.  I’m not going this year.
