Okay, well, the new season of lawn care has begun here at the Hesley household.  I’ll detail this effort in 2010 in the attached comments.

05:30 PM: Debbie drove me to Sheetz to pick up ten gallons of gas. This should last the whole summer, and this time, the gas cost approximately $32,

08:00 PM: I cut the grass for the first time this year. Lots of stops though, to pick up broken limbs and garbage. So this job took over two hours just to cut the lower two thirds of the yard. But it’s done now and should be easier the next time.

We didn’t yet have our lawn tractor maintained this year (no oil change or blade sharpening yet). The fellow that usually does this for us is backlogged a few weeks. So I’ll just wait until June or so, when things slow down for him, and when the grass growth slows a bit. Then I’ll take the Cub to him.

Used a tank of gas and seventeen feet of cord in the weed whacker tonight. Did all of the front, sides, and most of the back of the house. I’ll get down below to the pavilion sometime in the next few days.

05:30 PM: Went out to begin the second grass cutting. Cut the north, west, and south side yards next to the house, and down to and including the river path. Trouble on the south side though, the blade belt kept coming off due to gravel under the grass. I raked it for nearly a half-hour. That reduced the stalling, but more raking is needed. I’ll have to ask the fellow that plowed this past winter not to push the snow so far into our yard. I may say something. But then I may not.

07:30 PM: I’m done for today. I’ll mow more tomorrow, weather permitting.

01:20 PM: Cut the east yards this afternoon. Now sometime over the next few days, I’ll weed whack.

07:30 PM: Used a tank of gas weed whacking the east and west yards, the pavilion, and the west side of the shed. Still though, more trimming is needed. Perhaps Friday.

08:00 PM: Cutting #3: Cut all yards this afternoon with the Cub. Weed whacking tomorrow, weather permitting. Lots of trouble with the lawn tractor today; the blade belt kept coming off. Hitting lots of stones from the driveway graveling project last fall cause this. So I had to stop several times to rake them out of the way and re-seat the belt. Slow going. These conditions should improve through the summer however, as during each cutting, I move more and more of the gravel to where it’s supposed to be, and out of the grass.

02:00 PM: I beat the rain, just by a hair. Went through 20 Ft. of whacker cord and two tanks of gas. But the mowing as well as weed whacking for grass cutting #3 is in the bag now.

07:40 PM: Cutting #4. Cut all yards this afternoon with the Cub. Weed whacking tomorrow, weather permitting. No problems with the belts today. The new gravel has become more smoothed down. The weed whacker portion of this cutting to be performed tomorrow or when next the weather cooperates.

08:50 PM: Cutting #4. Weed whacked all spaces tonight. Used almost two tanks of gas and about fifteen feet of trimmer cord.

  9. Tom Hesley Says:

04:15 PM: Cut the grass this afternoon (cutting #5 for this year); it really grew fast over the past week to ten days. Will do the weed whacking part the first part of next week if the weather holds. The lawn tractor now has 330 hours on it. Also, I topped off all tires with air (the tractor and the wheelbarrow).

08:00 PM: Completed the mowing portion of grass cutting #6 for this year today. I’ll whack the weeds tomorrow, weather permitting. :-)

  11. Tom Hesley Says:

01:35 PM: Completed the mowing and weed whacking today for grass cutting #7 for this year.

04:55 PM: Completed the mowing portion of grass cutting #8 for this year.

Cut back the lilac bush on the north yard today, and trimmed low-hanging tree limbs above the east parking space.

Great day to be out working in the yard. Sunny. Crisp. Tee shirt warm, but not too hot. Mid 70s roughly.

This effort created a lot of large limbs strewn about the lawn. I’m carrying those little-by-little down to the burn pile. I attempted to move them on the wheelbarrow but discovered that it has a flat tire. Perhaps I’ll repair that tomorrow.

  14. Tom Hesley Says:

11:45 AM: Spent some of this morning carrying cut limbs and logs down to the brush pile. Great exercise. I’ll pick up the rest of the lilac bush branches cut yesterday, this afternoon.

05:45 PM: All limbs picked up and disposed of.

  15. Tom Hesley Says:

06:50 PM: Cut the grass for the 9th and final time for 2010 today. I may weed whack once more if the weather gets really nice one more time.

  16. Tom Hesley Says:

03:30 PM: Made repairs to the west (front) fence. Tightened loose boards and slats.

05:30 PM: Trimmed some low-hanging limbs on the trees in the west yard; this is the one closest to the highway.
