Today’s Activities

  • Shower.  DONE.
  • Cat duty.   DONE.

Log

08:00 AM: I’m up.  Good morning!

08:03 AM: Read more of the      book through the night.  It’s getting really good. This is one of those difficult-to-put-down   books.

08:05 AM: My weight did not change from yesterday.  It’s still 173.5 Lbs.    See   here   for a summary of the progress on this goal so far in 2010.

09:30 AM: Filled Mom’s med boxes to cover the next three weeks.  We’re getting short on vitamins and potassium.  So I’ll order more of each tomorrow.

10:45 AM: Completed the   weekly system backups.  I would have finished these last night.  But the database backups took an exceedingly long time for some reason.  So in the future, I may have to begin this process earlier in the day on Saturdays.

02:20 PM: Worked the  Emailing Comment Authors   project.  Studied WordPress coding conventions mostly.

02:30 PM: Nap time.  I often get sleepy when learning new software.

05:00 PM: I’m back up again, with a thunderstorm raging right overhead; skies gray with a bit of dark green, and the big rain drops and hale are striking the air conditioner here in the office, creating a loud, hissing sort of din.  That’s how hard it’s falling.

07:00 PM: Worked the  Emailing Comment Authors   project.  Experimented with retrieving a list of all comments associated with a particular blog post.  I’ll need this list in order to email all comment authors when someone posts a new comment.

08:00 PM: Talked with [Emmy].  We chatted earlier tonight because she’s watching a CBS movie at 8:00, that will no doubt extend well into our usual nightly phone time.

09:00 PM: Watched yesterday’s and today’s episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   on this brand new DVR (works great), and today’s episode of   CBS’s  Face The Nation   news show.

11:00 PM: Watched today’s episodes of   NBC’s Meet The Press   and   CBS’s 60 Minutes   news shows on the DVR.

11:30 PM: Talked with [Emmy] on the phone a bit more.

12:00 AM: And now ends another gray and damp day.  Bed time again.  So, take care, and I’ll write more tomorrow.  Good night.

Today’s Diet: 2010-04-25

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

I keep this food diary to stay aware of just how many calories I’m eating daily, with the hope that it decreases the likelihood that I’ll overeat.    It seems to work, so here we go with another day…

Today, I consumed the following items:

  • Herbal tea and diet caffeine-free Pepsi  throughout the day. 0 calories.
  • 12:30 PM: Pork roast and vegetables.  700 calories.
  • 12:40 PM: 1/4 cup raisins.  130 calories.
  • 08:00 PM: 1.5 cups oatmeal and Parmesan cheese.  600 calories.

Total calories: 1430.

Emailing Comment Authors

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Overnight, I worked on extending my blogging software so that it emails all comment authors in a comment thread, whenever someone posts a new comment to that thread.  I see that other blogs do this and was disappointed that WordPress does not generate these notifications by default. This could be a problem in that people who post comments are not notified when someone else replies.  Thus, the original poster may never discover that someone followed up with a comment, because they may forget to visit the blog again to check.  So I’m hoping that adding this emailing will entice people to return to the blogs more often.

To that end, I found a plug-in that does something similar; although for each new comment, it apparently emails only the person who posted the last (most recent) comment.  It does not email all comment authors in the thread, which is a shortcoming in my opinion.  But, in its favor, this plug-in (the ReplyMail WordPress plugin) allows the blog administrator to customize the formatting of the email messages it creates.  Plus, it supports template tags, which provide easy control over the content of said messages.  So I’d like to use this plug-in, but modify it slightly to email everyone in a comment thread when a new comment is added.

Unfortunately though, upon installing ReplyMail, I discovered that it does not generate any email.  I’ve verified that the plug-in is indeed executed each time I post a new comment.  Nonetheless, it sends nothing at present because it deems all comments which I’ve tried replying to as being unapproved, though in fact, they are indeed approved.

So, in the comments below, I’ll track my progress toward getting this new functionality functioning correctly.  I hope you’ll enjoy this software development journey as much as I will.
