I met this woman in 1997, and promised to shield her ears on that loud El subway if only she’d visit me in Philly. But the sojourn never happened and soon they lost touch, yet recently found each other again. She said she often remembered fondly my “loving offer to cover [her] ears.” Curious how the smallest gestures can make the most memorable impressions; and I wasn’t even trying. Well, not really.
