Log

08:00 AM: I’m up.

08:30 AM: Facebooked a while this morning.  Friend count is now 206.

09:45 PM: Added more content to  the   Gulf Oil Spill Thoughts: 2010-06-23   piece to the   Tom’s Views   blog.

10:45 AM: Added the   Therapy   category to the   Tom’s Love Quest   blog.  Posts in this group detail my experiences with and impressions of the therapy I sought through the years, to aid me in winning my love quest.

01:05 PM: Posted the   Our Government: 2010-06-24    piece to the   Tom’s Views   blog.

02:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.  Sharon came face-to-face with Adam.  Victor is forced to fly back home to testify in Nick’s trial.  Sky comes face-t0-face with Victor at the poker table.

04:45 PM: Watched today’s rerun episode of   Dr. Phil;   pertaining to Moms who drink and the problems this causes for their children and anyone who must coexist with them really.

06:00 PM: Facebooked for the past couple hours, and told my friends about Mom’s need to go to the hospital.  I’ve received numerous well-wishes.  That’s nice.

07:20 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.

07:45 PM: Watered all of Mom’s plants outside per her request while she’s away.

09:00 PM: iPodded at the pavilion for the past hour.  The new iOS 4.0 does work better.  Should play be interrupted by a weak WiFi signal, the AOL Radio app recovers now.  Before the station would stop playing, but not start again even after the signal strength rose until you pressed the play button again.  But now, it automatically restarts when I walk into a strong portion of the WiFi bubble.  Cool.  The Touch seems a bit more sluggish than before; I get some long pauses when touching the screen to switch to different stations.  But perhaps this is something they’ll work out in a maintenance release soon. I do hope so.

10:00 PM: Bought a late supper at Sheets, during    tonight’s shopping trip.

10:30 PM: Tried calling [Emmy] tonight.  But there was no answer.  She’s been getting tired earlier in the evening these days.  So she probably just went to bed.  I’ll catch her tomorrow.

10:58 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of    CNN’s AC 360   live.

11:00 PM: Looked for some older pictures that I was sure I’d stored on this computer.  But a whole folder was missing.  I checked my backups from as far back as a year ago, and apparently the folder has been gone at least that long.  So, fortunately, I was able to find many of those pics in my older email files; I’d sent them to numerous folks and saved copies of all my sent email.  Still though, I’m curious about what could have happened to that folder.  Hmmm.

01:00 AM: Facebooked a while.  Friend count is up to 215.

01:05 AM: Well, I’m going to pull out of here for the night.  Have a good one yourself, and I’ll be back out here again in under ten hours.  Good night.

Received Mail and Shipments

  • Coupon card from   Papa John’s   pizza.  No thanks.  I’m on a diet at present.  :-)
  • Notice from Mom’s medical insurance company of coverage they’re providing for a blood-glucose test she had run recently.
  • Credit card offer from BankAmericard.  Hmmm.  Haven’t heard that name in three decades.  Aren’t they what turned into today’s VISA?  Well, it looks like someone is resurrecting that old name these days.   But the longer I live, the more against credit cards for toy purchase I become.  So no thanks, but thanks anyway for the offer though.

Mom’s Status: 2010-06-24

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

02:00 PM: Mom is heading to her doctor; complaining of extreme shortness of breath.  She can barely take ten steps without becoming winded.  Hopefully he’ll be able to tell us what’s going on.

05:39 PM: Mom just left for the hospital; experiencing severe shortness of breath. They want to run tests over the next couple days to figure out why. So they’re admitting her through the weekend, and hopefully this will turn out to be nothing more severe than the chronic heart failure she’s suffered the past several years. To Mom: Take care, and we’ll come see you tomorrow. Love you.

11:30 PM: Just heard from Mom. She’s feeling better but they’ve not yet run any tests. We should know more tomorrow.

Facebook Tid Bits: 2010-06-24

02:25 PM: Hey, what can I say?  I get off so much on even the simplest of things; like being able to post to Facebook through my cell phone for the first time.

My grandmother spoke often of her amazement at television and how they could transmit color pictures and sound through, as she put it, “thin air by way of radio waves.”  Well as a boy, I thought that she was just being “old,” and so, paid little attention to her seemingly backward and uninformed musings.

But now, I’m the amazed one and think it utterly fascinating that we can communicate across the continent and around the world with a device smaller than a pack of cigarettes.  I so love technology and get a distinct thrill every time I observe it in operation; just as Gram did watching her TV.  So I guess that means that Gram was smarter to be in awe than I gave her credit for, and that now, I’m the one who is old!  :-)

02:50 PM: Chris: Tell Rich that I still have Grant’s Ethernet cable over here. Apparently Garrett forgot to take it home with him when he was here the other day.

03:39 PM: Tom Hesley thinks peer surveys virtually useless because coworkers can anonymously say whatever bad stuff they like as they hide from view, while proving none of it. They can thus fib with impunity and wreck a good career in the process if they happen to dislike you. To managers: Avoid relying much on these poles. Observe instead for yourselves, your workers performance and swear to take any pole with a large grain of salt.

06:10 PM: I’ve never done Skype; though I’ve heard it used on some of the podcasts to which I subscribe. It sounds pretty good actually.

06:35 PM: Skype, in case you don’t know what it is, is an Internet-based long-distance telephone company that allows you talk to anyone in the world that has Internet access and the appropriate hardware and software on their computer.  You can also call people who have landlines and cell phones as well.

07:44 PM: Well, the operative phrase here is MOVE SLOWLY.  Come to know him by getting to know his family, friends, and enemies if possible.  Talk to his exes if you know them.  Listen to how they talk of him, and watch how he acts when frustrated.  Does he get angry or appear obsessive?  How does he treat animals and children?  Does he manage his money well?  If you find very many people that have the same complaints, especially when they do not know each other, then that’s a bad sign that you should probably heed and steer clear; no matter how attracted to him you are.

Of course, it’s impossible to know for sure how someone will behave once a relationship gets going since we don’t have crystal balls; at least, none that work.  So this makes relationships inherently risky.  But you can eliminate much of that risk, just by going slow and making sure that your footing is very, VERY solid before taking that next step.  A man should respect your caution.  If he displays excessive irritation at it, then get away immediately.  If he’s impatient, you don’t want him, and impatience shows itself pretty early if you know what to look for.

09:12 PM: I remember in calculus they had a very steep curve.  My average was something like 84%.  But due to the curve, I got an A; one of the most pleasing surprises I’ve ever experienced.
