06:30 AM: I’m up.  This is the thirtieth anniversary of the break up with my first love, and I sense today that sometimes, time really does heal some of life’s most painful wounds.  It took lots of time to get over   [First Love].  But I’ve been over her for at least a decade now.  It helps too that I’ve not seen her in twenty years, and haven’t talked with her in nearly twelve years.  Now, instead of pain when I think of her, I feel thankful that we got a chance to try a relationship, and I’m thankful that we didn’t stay together any longer than we actually did; though at the time, I was devastated that our love time was so unfairly short.  So this is certainly one area of my life where I’m glad to be thirty years older.  :-)

08:00 AM: Noticed an acrid smell of burning plastic and / or electronic components at the top of the stairs on the second floor.  So, thinking that the odor was coming up the stairs from either the first floor or the basement, I went down there to investigate.  Found nothing out of the ordinary on floor one.  So I proceeded to the basement.  Surely the foul air must be originating down here; especially given that our water heater is leaking.  But I found nothing overheated or steaming anywhere near the water heater.  In fact, I smelled nothing bad down there at all.  Yet when I returned to the second floor, the smell greated me with the same ferocity as some of the bullies I remember from third grade.

Upon entering the office, I noticed that the compact fluorescent night light I always keep on, was not working.  Ah, that must be what was burning.  Indeed, upon removing the bulb, I noticed that same strong smell pervading from its base.  Further, the smell out by the stairs has grown weaker now that this light is no longer energized.  You know, I like the ides of these CFL bulbs.  But so often it’s the supporting electronics that go bad as opposed to the bulbs themselves.  But I can’t complain with much legitimacy about this particular bulb because I’ve had it for easily seven years, and it’s been operating for practically all of that time.  So I’d say I definitely got my money’s worth from it.  Hmmmmm.  Now, what to replace it with.  Perhaps I’ll find and LED bulb.

08:45 AM: Recorded audio journal episode  AJE-2010-09-21-08-28.

12:05 PM: Worked the   Water Heater Replacement: 2010   project.  Now I’m having lunch.

05:40 PM: Worked the   Water Heater Replacement: 2010   project. The water heater has been successfully installed and is functioning well.

05:45 PM: Heading up to visit Mom.  Back later.

07:45 PM: I’ve returned home.

08:45 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

09:30 PM: Talked with sister Mary Ann and gave her an update on Mom.

10:40 PM: Talked with [Emmy]   on the phone.  We’re both tired.  I never realized how exhausting it can be to observe another person install a new water heater.  That’s what I did most of today, and I’m bushed.

10:55 PM: Briefly Facebooked, and now, I’m going (definitely not so briefly) to bed.  Now that things are back to normal here at the house, I can get back to my routine tomorrow.  Emergencies are not fun when they arise out of the blue; like most emergencies do.  But the water heater one is over now, and at least it didn’t flood the nearby furnace.  I’m thankful for that.  Good night.

Received Mail and Shipments

  • Weekly coupon mailer.
  • Confirmation from our gas company about the gas supplier I selected a week or two ago, in order to lock in a pretty good rate for gas for the next year.
  • An advertisement for the EdenPURE quartz infrared portable heater, as recommended by Bob Vila.    But we already have more heaters here than we can use.  So, not at this time, but thanks anyway.
  • Personal checking account offers from First Commonwealth Bank.  Not at this time, thanks.
  • Balance transfer offer from Capital One Bank.  No thanks.

Mom’s Status: 2010-09-21

Summary

Mom has improved mentally.  She’s happier.  However, she’s only shown modest improvement physically.  But there’s talk of transferring her to another facility in the area that highly specializes in physical therapy.  They’ll let us know when she’s been approved to go there. Her memory is good but her voice is rather week.  Still though, she’s happier.  She’s just cold.  Her run of antibiotic is about done now.  So the intense monitoring begins.  We’ll be looking for a return of her fever and other signs of MRSA resurgence.  But hopefully, even if that occurs, she won’t have nearly the pain she experienced in her legs while a patient in Pittsburgh because this time, there’s no internal bleeding.  The intensely uncertain times ahead start now.

05:45 PM: Sister Jojo, niece Katie, and myself are leaving now to visit Mom.  Details follow:

  • 06:00 PM: We arrived to find Mom sitting at a table near the TV room.  She immediately smiled upon seeing us.
  • Note that she’s only taking one antibiotic at this time, for the MRSA, and that is due to end within the next couple days.  Reports that she has taken any  more than this past week  for a UTI are incorrect.
  • She’s been very cold.  In fact, she was bundled up like she was attending a football game in November.  She wore a hat and coat, and the only bare sin we could see was on her face and hands.  She thickly covered everything else.
  • A couple patients came over to greet us; saying that they just loved Mom.  She’s barely been there a week and already has made several friends.
  • She’s happier today.  Hearing sad stories told by patients and television news reporters does not make her cry today as it did before.
  • Mom is still unable to lift her legs.  However, with assistance, she’s been walking in bits and pieces all week.  She is getting better but at a slower rate than at the beginning of September.
  • Her blood sugar readings have bee typical: up and down, and not terribly steady.
  • She’s quite tired from all the working out.  But she didn’t drift off once during our visit.  Her alertness did not falter and she appears to have no memory problems now beyond the run-of-the-mill type that we’ve grown accustomed to.
  • Her skin tone is also very good.  She’s alive!  :-)   However, she still prefers no calls.  She’ll advise when she’s ready to hear from her friends again.
  • Sister Jojo brought a container full of peanuts and the four of us snacked on those along with some gram crackers in sealed single-portion sizes that we found on the table.
  • 07:05 PM: But it’s time to go.  So we said good bye and she hugged us each tightly.  Hmmm.  There’s nothing wrong with her arms; that’s for sure.  More later.

Water Heater Replacement: 2010

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Yesterday, I discovered a leak in our State 50-gallon gas water heater, and made arrangements for a new one to be installed today.  Details of that effort follow:

09:00 AM: The first of two technicians arrived. He started the process of draining the old tank.  We’ll call him Tech Guy #1.  The premature failure of this unit surprised him but he says that six years life is not unheard of for tanks in very hard water environments, as ours is.

10:00 AM: The second technician arrived.  We’ll call him Tech Guy #2.

10:15 AM: The two of them  finished draining the old tank; hauling it out through the east poarch access portal.   I helped Tech Guy #1 lift it to the opening, where Tech Guy #2 outside grabbed it and helped guide and pull it the rest of the way.

11:00 AM: They inspected the chimney exhaust openings and decided that they’ll have to chisel out the one they’ll use a little.  At first, they were concerned, as they could not see daylight shining down through from the top of the chimney.  But I put a mirror into the opening and saw a good bit of blue sky reflect back.

11:45 AM: They placed the new tank into position.  However, since it has 1” pipe connections for the water, and the old tank had 3/4” fittings, Tech Guy #2 must go to the hardware store to get the bigger pieces during his lunch break.  He also needs some additional black iron 1/2” pipe for the gas, since the new tank must be positioned differently than what was here.  Tech Guy #1 left as the rest of the job can be performed by one person.

01:00 PM: Tech Guy #2 returned with the needed supplies, and immediately set to work.

01:45 PM: Tech Guy #2 was surprised that our humidifier had previously been connected to the hot water supply instead of the cold supply.  He wondered why I had done this.  I explained that I’d researched the subject of water evaporation, and found that the warmer water is, the more it evaporates.  So it follows that the warmer the water injected into the humidifier, the more water vapor one can expect to get out.  Also, I related the story of the humidifier at my Copper Creek Court house, which had originally been connected to a cold water feed.  However, it did not appreciably raise the humidity until I moved its saddle valve over to the hot feed.  Then, it started RAINING in my house.  :-)   I think he, the plumber, learned something from me, the layman, today.

02:00 PM: All water connections made, and filling is under way. While that’s going on, Tech Guy #2 hooked up the gas line and performed the masonry modifications to the chimney to accommodate the bigger exhaust pipe.

02:45 PM: Tech Guy #2 finished cutting the piping for the exhaust, installed the pipe, applied a few sheet metal screws to tightly secure it, and then sprayed that quickly-hardening foam around where the exhaust pipe exists from the basement into the chimney.  Normally he uses furnace cement for this but felt that the foam would seal equally as well, and with lest invested time.

03:00 PM: Installation complete.  He lit the burner just now.

03:30 PM: He recorded the model and serial numbers of the new heater.

04:00 PM: Tech Guy #2 departed.  The water is getting warmer as of this writing, and still appears rusty. So I’m in the process of flushing the system now.  I’ll just let the hot water run until it clears.  His company will bill me in the coming weeks for the work.

04:15 PM: Water is still cloudy.  Flushing continues.  Also, priming my circulating pump for the instant hot water proved a bit difficult because there was just SO much air left in the water lines after near-completely draining them as we drained the old tank.  So to prime, I ran the circulater at full power, opened all bypass valves (two of them), and then drew hot water from the bath tub.  After five or ten minutes, that strang gurgling noise coming from the circulating pump disappeared and it resumed its normal purring sound.  So I ramped down the supply voltage from 110 volts to 70 volts.  It’s working great now.

05:30 PM: Flushing operation done.  The hot water now appears about as clear as the cold.  So I’ll rely on subsequent hot water use in showers and laundry to rinse out whatever rust and other debris remains in the water lines.

07:45 PM: I stepped out for a couple hours and when I returned to find that the tank had finished the heating cycle, and the burner had shut off some time earlier, as the exhaust pipe was bone cold.  The water is hot, and everything appears to be functioning as it should.
