Log
04:00 AM: Woke up early but not tired. So I’ll rise and get a little work done and then go back to sleep a little later.
05:00 AM: Posted the Telling Sandy About Mom piece.
05:10 AM: Back to bed. Later.
09:00 AM: I’m up again, this time, for the day.
10:15 AM: Worked the Lawn Maintenance: 2010 project. I carried some brush gathered from around the yard down to the burn pile.
01:30 PM: Posted the Tom’s Views –> US Healthcare Reform Debate piece.
02:15 PM: Talked with [Emmy] on the phone, which made for a re energizing lunch break. But it’s back to work now.
03:15 AM: Worked the Lawn Maintenance: 2010 project.
04:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of The Young and the Restless on the DVR.
04:30 PM: Attempted to listen to the Penguins hockey game with [Emmy]. But I grew sleepy about a half-hour in. Nap time.
06:00 PM: I woke from the nap and listened to the last half-hour of the Penguins game, by myself. They ended up winning their first regular season game; 3 to 1, against the New Jersey Devils.
06:45 PM: Went to the east porch to iPod, and to watch a brewing thunderstorm. Peculiar thing about this storm. It came from the west but the bulk of the intense lightning flashes originated in the north. The storm center must be passing by just north of my position. Oop. There was a large crash. Time to head indoors.
07:15 PM: I watched the rest of the storm play out from the safety of the living room. It’s still raining lightly but the lightning and thunder have become very subdued at this time, with just a few deep rumbles here and there rolling around the sky and mountains.
08:25 PM: Watched last night’s and tonight’s episodes of NBC’s Nightly News news show on the DVR.
08:30 PM: Me, advising a woman about whether she should stay online during a thunderstorm: Well, the absolute safest approach would be to get offline, turn off your computer, and disconnect it from power lines and the Internet. But, in my small office here, I never turn my equipment off because it takes too long to power back up. Since I never know when the urge to write will strike, I keep everything up so I can write whimsically, as quickly as possible, so I don’t lose the thought while waiting for computers to boot up. Now I’ve operated this way for well over ten years without any problems. You should be okay to be online as long as you employ quality surge protectors on your equipment. But even with that, keep in mind that neither you nor your equipment will be protected in the event of a direct strike; no matter how good your surge protectors are. Indeed, by working a computer during a thunderstorm, you are playing the odds; though admittedly the chances of you being struck are minuscule.
11:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of Hawaii Five-0 with [Emmy] over the phone.
11:10 PM: Bed time. More tomorrow.
