Dr. Phil Episode Notes: Happy Birthday, Avery
Here are my notes for today’s Dr. Phil episode: Happy Birthday, Avery.
Segment 1
Summary: Dr. Phil’s first granddaughter just turned one year old and they’ve brought her to the show to show her off and tell how she’s been getting on in her new life and family. Then, the lady in their guest couple appears to have lost lots of weight and Dr. Phil reminds the man just how attractive his woman has become.
All new. Avery Elizabeth’s first birthday and they bring in a large cake. Dr. Phil holds his granddaughter, beaming, and in a different shot, shows Avery how to play tennis. Robin stands by, looking proud. Will his sun Jay have another child?
Later, they’re showing new moms how to lose the weight they picked up during their pregnancies.
Dr. Phil and Robin take the stage. Then, his son Jay and his wife Erica join them, holding Avery Elizabeth. Of course, the audience is enamored. They’ve got the stage arranged to look like a living room, with two couches at right angles to one another, and a coffee table between them.
Erica says that having Avery has brought out the very gentle, fatherly, and extraordinarily kind side of Jay. She and Jay told story of their hairless cat and how, due to his hairlessness, he seeks out warm objects. Once, he sought out the baby in her crib, and surprised Erica and Jay, when he blocked the view of the baby monitory camera as he walked around the top of the crib. Cute.
Now they’re showing a summary tape of the past year, that depicts some high points of Erica’s, Jay’s, and Avery’s lives at home. They mentioned being frightened when a bloody booger appeared at Avery’s nose, and how they frantically called Dr. Richard Sears and sent him a picture of it, to gain his quick advice. It turned out to be nothing out of the ordinary.
Avery appears to enjoy music and dancing to it.
Robin complained that Dr. Phil is always wanting to help her with Avery, even though she does need (or want) his help.
Dr. Phil in one of the tape pieces tried to teach Avery his famous saying, “You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge.” He and Robin showed Avery various fruits and vegetables, told her their names, and invited her to eat some.
Next, they’ll discuss if Jay and Erica plan on having anymore children. Robin indeed wants them to have more.
Segment 2
Starts off by showing more family life pictures of Erica, Jay, and Avery Elizabeth. They say they very much enjoy parenthood.
Jay suggests to Erica that perhaps they could have more kids.
Dr. Phil and Robin had Jay and Jordan seven years apart. But they don’t want Jay and Erica to wait that long to have their next baby.
Erica reveals that she’s four months pregnant now. While they have not tested for the sex of the new baby, Jay would be happy with either a boy or a girl. The due date falls on Dr. Phil’s birthday.
They bring out Avery’s birthday cake, prepared by the Original Yummy Cupcake company. They’re passing out cupcakes to the audience.
Erica’s identical triplet sisters walk up onto the stage with their babies. They all gave birth within the past year.
Avery blew out the one little candle on her cupcake.
Then, they showed scenes of the birthday party they had for Avery at Dr. Phil’s house over the weekend. Jay narrated this tape, that showed a large cupcake, fabricated from balloons.
Nicole and Jaclyn are Erica’s sisters.
Next, they’ll discuss how all these women got their thin figures back after birthing.
Segment 3
They’re showing pictures of the pregnant women (Erica, Nicole, and Jaclyn). All the sisters created an exercise video called: 3, 2, 1 Get Your Body Back. They’re showing pieces of this video, organized into ten minute workouts. The girls describe the type of exercise each lady demonstrates in it.
Next, they’ll introduce a woman who dropped over a hundred pounds. This dramatic weight loss brought her lots of attention. But from her husband? Not so much.
Segment 4
Husband Brad and wife Teesha.
Teesha weighed over three hundred pounds. Then, she had gastric bypass surgery and immediately dropped 102 pounds. She hoped Brad would behave more jealously, even though prior to her surgery, she warned him not to treat her any differently. But now that she’s lose some significant weight, she wants him to notice her more; to validate her efforts to look better. Now that this change is done, she wants to know that her husband appreciates the change she’s made.
Brad doesn’t want to act too jealous, as he wishes not to stoke her ego.
Segment 5
Brad says that he compliments Teesha on many, many things besides her physical attributes because it was “the whole” package that he fell in love with; not just her looks. He listed a whole slew of Teesha’s personal traits that he loves.
Teesha wants Brad to notice more of her looks, but not much more. She provided a list of compliments that she’d like to hear Brad direct toward her. This list is somewhat different and indeed more extensive than Brad’s compliment list. Teesha feels that she’s lost part of herself by losing the weight; her courageousness. She finds it difficult to “be” a thin person. She wants Brad to assure her that he’s convinced that she’s okay as she is now. She wants to avoid having her thinness “define” her.
Dr. Phil points out that losing the weight typically does not resolve all the psychological issues that are associated with being heavy. Often, people still hold the same self image after they drop the pounds that they had prior. He advises Teesha that she should be easier on herself as she discovers the new her as a thin lady. He said that she needs to make sure that her thinness indeed does not define her, in her own mind.
Segment 6
Dr. Phil suggests that how she was before, people might not pay as much attention to today, because her looks now overshadow her previous persona. He pointed out how difficult it is for a man to compliment a woman, as it’s so easy to appear to pay too much attention to the wrong stuff. He then gave her a white sign with red letters that said, “Compliment Me.”
Brad assures Teesha that he indeed accepts her as she was, and as she is now.
Teesha needed to hear Brad’s assurance, and seemed moved to tears by it.
Segment 7
They provide updates on Dr. Phil’s 17 Day Diet Challenge so far. One person lost 36 pounds, another 44, and another fellow lost 74 pounds. This program seems to work. They’re showing pieces of the challenge from tomorrow’s episode of The Doctors television show.
Dr. Phil plugged the 17 Day Diet book and the web site where you can purchase it.
He thanked the guests and his family for coming, and mentioned once more Erica, Nicole, and Jaclyn’s video: 3, 2, 1 Get Your Body Back. He gave everyone in the audience a copy of this video.
That’s the end of this episode.
