07:30 AM: I’m up.

08:00 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 577 (unchanged).  Fan count: 111 (unchanged).

08:45 AM: Talked with Mom’s nursing home regarding the over-billing issue.  They agree that there is a problem and are still investigating.

09:30 AM Cleaned bathroom (tub, sink, toilet, medicine cabinet).

09:40 AM: Talked with Mom’s bank to stop the monthly money transfers from her checking to savings accounts.  They informed me that this cannot be done over the phone.  So they’re sendiung me the necessary forms to sign.

10:00 AM: My lab results from the doctor’s appointment a couple days ago are back.  Total cholesterol: 203.  HDL: 38.  LDL: 115.  Triglycerides: 248.  Not terrible readings, but not good either.  I’m hoping that adding routine exercise on a treadmill will lower the triglycerides, raise the HDL, and lower the LDL and total cholesterol numbers.  Stay tuned.

12:45 PM: Leaving now for a short visit with Mom, to replenish her laundry supply, and to resolve the apparent over-billing issue with the nursing home.  Back later.

02:00 PM: I’m back home. Now, sisters Diane and Mary Ann, along with me, are going through Mom’s things and moving what is to be distributed into the east sitting room.

05:30 PM: Leaving now for supper at Austin’s Texas Hot Dogs, across from DelGrosso amusement park.  Back later.

06:45 PM: Sister Mary Ann will drop me off at the cemetery to get my walk in.  She’s coming up again this week to further sort out which of Mom’s belongings are to stay, and which are to go.

06:45 PM: Leaving now for walk 75 of 100 for 2011, again, to the south cemetery.  Back in an hour.

07:45 PM: I’m back.    The temperature was 55 degrees, mostly sunny, calm winds, and quite dry.  A nice and crisp walk it was.  I even noticed the first scents of burning fall leaves in the air.

09:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

12:00 AM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at ????; down from 1166 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:10 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

Log

08:15 AM: I’m up.  It’s sunny this morning with temps in the low to mid 50s.

10:00 AM: Facebooked for an hour and got caught up on my blogs.

10:35 AM: Balanced all checking accounts in my purview.

10:45 AM: Leaving now for lunch at Olive Garden with [Emmy].  She has a $25 gift certificate to spend, and if all goes well today, we’ll definitely spend it.

11:20 AM: Arrived at Olive Garden.

12:30 PM: We each got the salad, bread sticks, and unlimited pasta bowl.  However, neither of us could eat more than one bowl.  So they gave us some boxes for the leftover whole wheat pasta and sauce.

01:00 PM: For dessert, we each had a piece of chocolate moose cheesecake.  Yum!

02:10 PM: Then, we took a walk across the parking lot to Everything Natural food store, where I finally found more buckwheat pancake mix.  So I bought six bags at $5 apiece.  Yea, I know.  I’m an obsessed whole grain pancake fan.

03:30 PM: We’re home and in dire need of a nap.  All that pasta and dessert make great sleep inducers; at least, during the day time anyhow.  So, we’re off to dreamland.  Back later.

05:00 PM: We’re awake again.

06:30 PM: Prepared my treasurer’s report for the   WPSBC Alumni Association    board meeting, to be held tonight.  Bumped into a small but scary problem in that I could not locate the treasurer’s report files.  I have recently migrated my data to a new computer (this Dell XPS 8300), but forgot where on this machine, I put those files.  It turned out that they weren’t on this machine at all, but on my external hard drives.  Grrrrrr.  Well, they ARE here now.  :-)

06:40 PM: No time for a walk this evening, with the board meeting occurring during my usual constitutional time.  I’ll make up for it in the next several days.  Besides, the weather appears rather unsettled.  So I probably wouldn’t have walked anyway, even without the board meeting getting in the way.

07:00 PM:   The WPSBC Alumni Association    board meeting starts now.

07:45 PM: The board meeting has ended, and final plans are being executed for our fun day social in September.  It’s going to be a couple hours longer this year, and unlike in previous get-togethers, we’ll provide doughnuts and coffee this time.  Nice.

08:45 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

10:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Watched this week’s episodes of KDKA TV’s   Pittsburgh Today Live   variety show with [Emmy] during our free moments today.

11:55 PM: Facebooked at various times throughout today.  Friend count: 558.  Fan count: 111.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count dropped again, and currently stands at 1418; down from 1421 the last time I checked.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

Today’s Activities

  • Shower. DONE.
  • Cat duty.  DONE.  I’m taking care of my cats once more now that I’m back from my mini vacation.

Log

08:00 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Unpacked from my Pittsburgh trip, that concluded yesterday with my return home.

09:15 AM: Returned a call that I received Friday from the county assistance office, WRT Mom’s Medical Assistance application status.  The case worker left no details in her message, except to say that she had a couple of questions that required answering before she could move forward with the application.  However, the case worker was out of the office.  I’ll attempt to raise her again this afternoon.

10:30 AM: Talked with [Emmy] about our new computers.  We’re both learning and it’s nice to have a learning buddy; one that is learning the same computer as I am.

12:00 PM: Wrote some content for future posts to the   Tom’s Views blog.

01:00 PM: Got another buzz cut this weekend.  I like not having to use a comb.  So this could be the second in a row, in a string of many buzz cuts. :-)

01:20 PM: The only thing I dislike about buzz cuts is that they require so little beautician time to complete.  The hair technicians move me in and out in under five minutes.  So I just barely get relaxed and into deeply enjoying them fiddling with my hair, when it’s time to wake up already.  Maybe I should have them first cut it with  a  #4, then when they’ve finished that, tell them that I changed my mind and want #2.  Then when that’s done, opt for a #1 shaving.  Doing that wouid give me the duration of a scissor cut but the convenience of a buzz cut.  Of course I’d likely anger hair dressers profusely in the process.  :-)

02:00 PM: Talked to Mom’s case worker at the county assistance office.  All is well with the paperwork I submitted last week.  Now, Mom’s application for Medical Assistance goes to Harrisburg for final authorization.  The representative expects no problems, and that Mom will be authorized quickly.  We’re expecting to hear back from them this week.

04:00 PM: Tonight for supper: Mrs. Paul’s Fish SANDWICH fillets, but without the bread.  Also, I found what looks like a bowl of chilly in the freezer.  So gonna devaur that as well.

06:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless via the DVR.

09:30 PM: Watched today’s rerun episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Spoiled and Entitled Girls Return! I saw this already but watched it again because I did enjoy Josie.  I couldn’t believe how easily the bigoted and condescending insults just rolled off her tongue.  However, though this was quite amusing, it’s also the reason why I’d never have anything to do with besides laughing at her on TV.  :-)

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  We figured out how to open port 3389 in her McAfee personal firewall so that I now can get onto her computer from here.  I love Remote Desktop.  We also disabled the Dell Stage program since it seems to not be readable by the default JAWS software.  Then, we attempted a Windows Remote Assistance connection so I can watch what she’s doing in Outlook and help her with interpreting what’s on the screen.  However, we kept receiving a connection timeout.  Not sure what that’s about.  But I’ll delve more into that tomorrow.

12:00 AM: Ordered some BNC twist-on connectors so I can construct some signal probes for the new function generator I purchased last week.  I’ll use this equipment to test out some home-grown switching power supply circuits.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count stopped falling, and rose a little, and now stands at 1756; up from 1744 the last time I checked.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

01:10 AM: Facebooked some more.  Nothing earth-shattering read tonight.

01:20 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

09:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 553; Fan count: 112.

10:20 AM: I’m still coughing, but a little less today than yesterday.  All that’s left of the cold now is the cough and a bit of a stuffy nose.  My energy is coming back little by little.  Perhaps within the next week, I’ll be my spunky self once more.

11:00 AM: Balanced all checking accounts.

12:00 PM: Paid all pending bills for today and started the laundry.

02:35 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

02:45 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

04:45 PM: I’m awake again.

06:00 PM: Skipped today’s rerun episode of   Dr. Phil   via the DVR.

09:00 PM: Spent some of this day reading about switching power supplies.  I’m interested in building a couple for my WiFi access point (the store-bought ones keep burning out).  I’ve not dabbled in power electronics for some years.  I’m amazed at how much I remember.

09:55 PM: Ordered some inductors, schottky diodes, and power MOSFET transistors, to pay around with the power supply circuit on a breadboard.  Conceptually, switching power supplies seem pretty straight forward,  but are definitely more complicated than the linear power supplies I used to build in the early eighties.  They contain more active parts, but are much more efficient than those supplies of yester decade.  I also might try my hand at building an iPod wall charger.

10:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

10:15 PM: Laundry done.

11:30 PM: Stripped down my old Micron Pentium 2 computer, circa 1998.  It stopped working a couple years ago but still has some good parts (5 port USB 2.0 card, 3 port FireWire card, a good power supply albeit dusty, a Yamaha CD ROM drive, a zip drive, and an Adaptec 2940 SCSI card).  The rest, including the motherboard, modem, graphics card, and floppy drive, I’m putting with my recyclable electronics.

12:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   broadcast via the DVR.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count rose a fair amount this time, and now stands at 1747; up from 1745 yesterday.  The record high for this dimension is now 1747.  The next goal: 2000.

09:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 552; Fan count: 111.

10:20 AM: I’m still coughing.  But my voice is getting stronger still, and signs of a sinus infection have disappeared completely.  I no longer have to take pain relievers for that intensely sore throat I experienced over the past week.

11:30 AM: Talked with [Emmy] for a mid-day break.

12:00 PM: Spent the morning paying bills for the house and Mom’s medical expenses.  Also called a few of the vendors to resolve discrepencies between what I thought we owed them and what they said we did.  Looks like one of them never received the checks I sent early last month.  So now I must wait for Mom’s latest banking statement to arrive to see if those checks have cleared.  It they have, then I have to get copies of them and submit to the vendor so they can investigate further.  *Oh Joy!*

01:00 PM: Heated up some beef grain soup from the freezer for lunch.  Yummy!

02:35 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

02:45 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

04:45 PM: I’m awake again.

05:30 PM: Removed the old house numbers from the west and south porches.  Will pick up some new ones soon, that reflect our E-911 address.  I figure it’s safe to take down the old numbers since it’s now been a year since our address officially changed.  Besides, I don’t want delivery personnel to be confused by an outdated number on the house.  I kept the the expired numbers up for this long because some outfits still send mail to the old address.  But haven’t gotten any of those parcels for a few months now.  So it’s probably okay to dispose of the old house number.

07:55 AM: I’m up.

09:06 AM: Green tea or Lucky Charms for breakfast today? Hmmm. Well, I guess it will have to be green tea today, because I ate all the Lucky Charms yesterday. Grrrrrrrrr.

10:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 552; Fan count: 111.

10:20 AM: I still have a cough, my voice is getting stronger, and signs of a sinus infection have receded a bit.

11:02 AM: This hard drive that I’m using as I write this, hung repeatedly a couple weeks ago during file copy. So, I ran CHKDSK, and it still hung (in CHKDSK stage 4). Thus I bought a new Seagate HDD with SATA, and a Windows 7 upgrade. Just waiting for my Facebook traffic to slow enough that I can duck out for a couple days to rebuild this machine. I have to upgrade the graphics card too. Hmmm. Maybe I should have just bought a whole new computer.

12:00 PM: Located proof that we closed out Mom’s investment account and gathered all her bank statements and check copies for her current checking account into one location.

06:00 PM: Skipped today’s rerun episode of   Dr. Phil   via the DVR.

10:00 PM: Spent much of this evening reviewing the coverage of the Casey Anthony trial and the not-guilty verdict.  I agree with the jury; not enough direct and incontrovertible evidence to convict Anthony. She has served nearly three years already for her apparent negligence.   Also, this was a capital case (death penalty sought had she been found guilty). In such cases, the burden of proof is, as it should be, much higher. Reasonable doubt becomes SHADOW of a doubt, and with so much of the prosecution’s case hinging on circumstantial evidence and iffy technology, it’s no wonder it failed to convince jurors of Anthony’s guilt. They might have had better success though, if they’d taken the death penalty off the table. Juries are more willing to convict when they know that the decision can be reversed if later proven wrong. But the death penalty is of course, irreversible, and as a result, some guilty people are found innocent because while the jury might think them guilty, they do not wish to impose such a harsh punishment. Not saying that this is definitely what happened in the Anthony case. But it’s plausible.

09:00 AM: I’m up.

11:00 AM: Returned a call from the admissions director at Mom’s nursing home.  She just wanted to let me know that she had talked with the MA benefits administrator, and that we should send all but a specified amount of the money in Mom’s checking account to the nursing home.

11:40 AM: Gathered some of the information required to fill out Mom’s VA benefits application. Still searching for Dad’s military service records.

02:00 PM: Balanced Mom’s checking account through the end of last month.

03:30 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

05:45 PM: I’m awake again.

09:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  My voice is all but gone.  So we decided to talk earlier and in abbreviated fashion so I could give it lots of rest tonight.

09:45 PM:   Maybe someday I will switch over to MacOS from Windows (as suggested by one of my Facebook friends). I already run iOS 4 on my iPods. Does that count? :-) But I have significant equipment and decades of training investment in Windows. Still though, that whole idea about Macs contracting viruses being impossible is compelling. Not sure I believe that. But I am curious about it nonetheless. Once they perfect hardware virtualization in Windows and the supporting equipment, maybe viruses will be things of the past that environment too.

10:00 PM: Added Promo Only’s 2011-06-21 and 2011-06-27 EA DFF releases to my music library (22 songs roughly).

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count moved higher again this time, and now stands at  1655; up from 1649 yesterday.  The new record high is now 1655 key phrases therefore.  The next goal: 2000.

08:30 PM: Synced all my 2011 music to one of my iPods.  There are 886 songs so far for this year at 3.01 GB.  I think I’ll designate one iPod for new music, another for older stuff, and another for podcasts.  Then I’ll take which ever one I’m in the mood to listen to on my walks.  Though the iPod Touch would hold all my playlists I have currently, I worry about taking that one out and about for fear of losing it.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy]   and we watched tonight’s rerun episode of   Hawaii Five-0.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count jumped up significantly, and now stands at 1259; up from 1233 yesterday!  Looking great.  Next goal: 1500.

12:10 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.
