10:00 AM: We’re up.  Today is my birthday.  I’m thankful to have lived another year without any noticeable degradations in my health.

10:15 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 610 (up two). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

10:20 AM: No treadmill workout today.

12:30 PM: Cleared out the areas inside the eight windows I’m having replaced tomorrow, took down curtains and blinds from them, and removed most screws holding the kitchen sink window shut.  No need for these after tomorrow.

02:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

05:00 PM: [Emmy]   and I ordered a veggie pizza from Brother’s Pizza in Bellwood. It arrived about fifteen minutes ago, and delicious it was.

06:00 PM: We watched KDKA TV’s local news at 5:00 PM.

08:00 PM: [Emmy] read talking books while I worked on getting caught up on some Misc. paperwork here in the office.

10:30 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: [Emmy]   is heading to bed.

11:30 PM: I finished converting and normalizing a new batch of songs.  I’ll tag and add them to the music library.

11:35 PM: Hmmm.  I’m surprised that   [Olga]   did not call to wish me a happy birthday this year.  Every year for perhaps the past ten years or more, she’s reliably checked in on this day.  I hope nothing’s gone wrong in her life.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count for this run is 860, up from 850 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:10 AM: I’m heading to bed.  More tomorrow.

09:40 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 601 (unchanged). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

10:00 AM: [Emmy]   and I will watch some more of the 911 TV shows I recorded on the DVR, and I’ll multitask by  preparing a batch of creamed cauliflower, that we’ll take as our offering to sister Christine’s Thanksgiving dinner this afternoon.  I plan on having this ready by 2:00 PM.

01:30 PM: I cooked three heads of cauliflower in a steamer.  Then, I added a home made white sauce, constructed of butter, whole milk, flour, and salt.  It really turned out tasting quite good.  I put it in a big casserole dish, and sealed the lid on with shipping tape, to prevent spillage during the trip over Brush moutain to Christine’s.

02:00 PM: Watched the 2011-11-22 and 2011-11-23 episodes of    The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

02:30 PM: Sister Diane just stopped by to take    [Emmy]   and I to sister Christine’s place for her Thanksgiving meal.  Back later.

02:40 PM: We arrived at sister Christine’s.

04:00 PM: The meal was served right on time.  I can tell that Christine’s been preparing Thanksgiving meals for many years.

08:00 PM: Watched   National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation   movie.  It’s sort of a yearly tradition after the Thanksgiving meal at sister Christine’s house, and it’s as funny as ever.

08:30 PM: We’re back home.

10:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:10 PM: Replaced several defective light bulbs in the Christmas lights outside.

11:15 PM: We’re headed to bed.  Good night.  Come back for more tomorrow.

08:15 AM: [Emmy will watch some of the 911 TV shows I recorded for her on the DVR while I prepare our mini Thanksgiving dinner throughout this morning.  I plan on having the meal ready at 1:00 PM.

09:30 AM: Turkey's in the roaster, so that three hours and some odd minutes from now, ...,  Mmmmmmmmmm!  Now, what do I do with those giblets and neck?  I decided to boil them with onions, then make gravy with the broth.  Yum!  :-)   Happy Thanksgiving!

01:00 PM: The meal turned out pretty well.  We had turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, corn, green beans, and cranberry sauce.  I didn't make any other items, as we'll be eating another Thanksgiving dinner at sister Christine's tomorrow, and she'll be serving some of the other Thanksgiving staples that I did not, such as green bean casserole, pineapple souffle, pumpkin pie, and so on.

08:20 PM: Watched tonight's episode of   NBC's Nightly News   via the DVR.

10:00 PM: Listened to the Penguins hockey game tonight via the Internet radio with   [Emmy].  The Pens lost to the St. Louis Blues tonight however, 3 to 2.  Grrrrr.

11:00 PM: Watched some of the recorded 911 coverage with   [Emmy].

11:10 PM: Removed for repair two strings of overly dim Christmas lights from the south porch.  Replaced them with two brighter strings that I repaired the other day.  I’ll fix these new bad ones over the next couple days.

11:45 PM: We’re headed to bed.  Good night.  Come back for more tomorrow.

10:45 AM: Leaving now to donate blood.  Back later.

11:10 AM: Arrived at the Red Cross building, which is where the REX TV and Appliance store used to be in the Orchard Plaza here in Altoona.  However, the doors were not open yet.  So we’re walking across the lot to Eat N Park for brunch (they say we should eat heartily before giving blood.  So that’s what I’m going to do anyhow.).

12:00 PM: I had a Black Angus bacon and cheddar burger and two cups of hot chocolate.  Mmmmmm.

12:10 PM: We returned to the Red Cross, to find the doors open.

12:30 PM: They took   [Emmy]   first.  However, though her hemogloben count has risen back into the normal range since the last time she attempted to give last February, they could still not allow her to donate this time, due to the medication she’s taking for the sleep study with which she’s involved.

01:30 PM: I was able to donate however.  My hemogloben was 15.5; well above the low cut-off threshold of 12.5.  I suffered no ill effects.

01:45 PM: We both had a few snacks in the “recovery area,” and watched some of    The Young and the Restless on the wall-mounted plasma television there.  Hmmm.  The old CRT-style TVs are fast disappearing, in favor of these panel screen models.

03:15 PM: The van arrived to take us home.

04:00 PM: I’m home.  It took a bit longer than usual to get home from Altoona, as there were many shoppers riding with us today, hoping to beat the Black Friday masses.

04:20 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

06:00 PM: We’re awake again.

09:45 AM: Walked and jogged on the treadmill for one hour exactly, for walk 90 of 100 in 2011.  I burned roughly five hundred calories and traversed about four treadmill miles.

11:25 AM: Leaving now with sister Jojo to attend our sisters’ birthday lunch as well as to visit Mom and do a bit of shopping.  Back later.

02:00 PM: All my siblings and myself met at Jethro’s for lunch.  Many pictures of us all, and the twins by themselves were taken, and we enjoyed catching up socially.  Nice afternoon it was.

02:30 PM: Sister Jojo dropped me off at Wal Mart, where I picked up this week’s fruits and vegetables supply, and then, we headed to the nursing home to visit Mom.

04:30 PM: I’m back home.  Mom needs some bigger pants.  She’s gained approximately 50 pounds at the home, and now weights 215 Lbs.  I think she had some bigger pants in storage bins up on the 2nd floor.  I’ll find them.

05:00 PM: Found Mom’s larger pants.  I’ll take them to her this week, and she can identify the ones she wants.

06:00 PM: Put up a few strings of Christmas lights on the south porch.  I’m starting to feel that Christmas spirit move me.  I love Christmas.

07:00 PM: Made a couple batches of buckwheat pancakes for tonight’s and tomorrow’s suppers.

08:00 PM: Watched today’s editions of CBS’s   Face The Nation    and   60 Minutes,   along with NBC’s   Meet The Press    public affairs news broadcasts.

09:00 AM: I’m up.

09:15 AM: Facebooked for several minutes. Friend count: 596 (unchanged). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

10:30 AM: Leaving now to visit Mom.  Back later.

12:30 PM: We ate lunch at Mom’s favorite Mexican restaurant.

01:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   as it aired, with Mom in her room.  The lounge that we normally view this in was occupied this afternoon.

04:00 PM: I’m home.  Mom was very tired today, and slept most of our visit, even at the taco place.  Apparently, she regularly receives a sleeping pill at night.  Not sure what time they gave this to her last night, but my impression is that oftentimes, she gets it in the middle of the night, once she’s already tried sleeping for a couple hours without success.  This means that the pill does not leave her system until well into the afternoon, which may explain her chronic grogginess that her regular visitors have observed. Unfortunately, though her physician’s assistant was scheduled to visit today, he did not come before I had to leave.  So I’m not sure what his strategy is for regulating Mom’s sleep patterns.  I doubt they’ll have much success with that, as Mom has never stuck to any routines very much.  If it’s going to get done, she’ll have to want to do it enough to actually discipline herself to get up at a normal times, and then go to bed at normal times.   So I do not look for this situation to improve much.  Mom has mostly tended to live as a night owl; sleeping during the day, and being fully alert throughout the night.

04:45 PM: The battery in Mom’s cell phone was completely kaput today; would not charge at all.  So I gave her the battery from my cell phone and will order more batteries presently.  I’m afraid to get her a new cell phone before she absolutely needs one, because she learns most new devices only with great difficulty, and would, with little doubt, become quickly frustrated with a different cell phone.  So I’ll keep her old cell phone going as long as possible, or at least, until they come out with a large-key, simple-to-use model for a reasonable price, through our current carrier.

07:25 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

08:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of    Dr. Phil,    called    Monster In-Laws.

09:20 PM: Talked with sister Diane.  She had numerous questions about my visit with Mom today and my colonoscopy last week.  I am, by the way, still a bit sore in back.  But things are healing nicely.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

11:55 PM: Watched the original series   Star Trek   episode   The Paradise Syndrome   via Netflix.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count dropped this time, and currently stands at 914, which is down from 921 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

07:00 AM: I’m up.

07:15 AM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 594 (unchanged). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

07:45 AM: Leaving now with sister Jojo for Friday shopping, dining, and Mom visiting.  Back later.

08:45 AM: Just finished shopping at Wal Mart.  Picked up some cat food, cat litter, fruit, oats, diet Pepsi for Mom, and some tear drop blue LED Christmas lights.

09:05 AM: Next, we stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts for some coffee and (what else?) donuts!  I particularly like their Bavarian cream pastries.

09:25 AM: We just arrived at the nursing home.  Mom is sure to still be in bed.  However, sister Jojo wants to get back home earlier than normal today, so she can clean her house thoroughly before her kids get home from school.

09:30 AM: I talked to the business office about the seemingly high balance on Mom’s monthly bills.  I told them that I verified this week that I agree with what they say I’ve paid them throughout 2011, but that I’m concerned that we still have such a high account balance.  I asked if we could have a face-to-face meeting sometime in November, to discuss, line-by-line, all the charges and credits that Mom has accrued since she began residing there in late March, 2011.  They agreed.  So it appears like this issue will remain open for another couple weeks anyhow.

11:00 AM: We visited Mom after leaving the business office.  Yep, she was still in bed, although she did sit up on the bed edge to talk to us.  She’s experiencing what appears to be neuropathy pain in her legs once again.  This is surprising because she has not felt this discomfort since January of this year.  It could actually be an encouraging development; perhaps some more nerve function is returning to her legs and perhaps she could, if so, learn to walk again.

12:30 PM: Once we finished with Mom, we headed to Panera Bread for lunch.  I enjoyed a baguette and Asian chicken salad, while sister Jojo munched on a sandwich and a smaller chicken salad.

12:45 PM: We then stopped at Lowe’s to look for more of the glass door knobs that sister Jojo purchased there last week.  However, they were out of stock, and could not tell us precisely when they’d be getting more in or if even they WOULD be getting more in.

01:30 PM: Next, we stopped at The Home Depot to see if THEY had these glass door knobs.  They did not, unfortunately.  So, sister Jojo will either have to wait until they reappear at a store in this area, or look for them on the Internet.  I however, had a much more fruitful shopping experience at Home Depot, as I picked up two rubber outdoor door mats for the house here, and a third mat for inside, at the west door.  Hmmm, these rubber mats would make a good, non conductive surface to place at my work bench in the basement, to reduce the risk of electrocution when I’m working with electrical appliances and Christmas lights.  I’ll have to pick up a couple more of these mats when next we visit   The Home Depot.

02:15 PM: I’m home and all groceries have been put away and the mats have been laid out.  Nice.

03:00 PM: Disassembled and cleaned the insides of the gas heaters in the basement.  Yep, it’s time to fire them up.  It would be nice to add a gas valve that’s operated by electricity in parallel with the built-in thermostatic valves in each heater.  That way, I could install thermostats upstairs that would activate the heaters when it get’s chilly.

07:00 PM: Worked the   Christmas Lighting: 2011   project.

08:10 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

09:00 PM: Downloaded the latest batch of fifteen songs from Promo Only’s EA DFF music subscription service.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

12:00 AM: Watched Star Trek, the original series episode:  The Enemy Within, where Kirk is duplicated by a defective transporter.  Spock and crew must figure out how to put Captain Kirk back together again without killing him.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 988, which is down from 1009 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

01:10 AM: I’ve been experiencing a steadily increasing anxiety since Mom has left that reached an uncomfortable crescendo this afternoon.  I tried with some success to reduce it by working on the Christmas lights and talking with   [Emmy].  But it returned after all that was finished.  So I spent the last half-hour journaling about it.  What is apparent to me now is that this sadness has multiple contributing factors, and in tonight’s journal session, I identified all the obvious ones, and will set to work in the coming days and weeks to address this.  In short, the bottom line is that I spend too much time alone, and have too little perceived control over how my life is unfolding.  While it’s true that I like being by myself much of the time, I still need SOME social interaction with others.  Also, while I’ve conceded long ago that we humans have only marginal control over the turns our life’s journey makes us take, I’m frequently frustrated that we have SO LITTLE control.  Will discuss both these facets more when I come up with a plan to deal with them.

01:15 AM: Headed for bed.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

08:30 AM: I’m up.

08:40 AM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 594 (up two). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

10:30 AM: Leaving now to visit Mom at the nursing home.  Back later.

11:25 AM: I arrived at the nursing home.  Mom was rising when I got there.

11:45 AM: I investigated the   Invalid battery   message Mom noticed on her Razr cell phone any time she’d plug it into the charger.  I swapped her charger with one I’d brought with me.  But this did not eliminate the error.  So I disconnected her phone from the charger and removed the battery for a minutes, and then reinstalled the battery.  After this, connecting the charger no longer produced the error message.  Perhaps some static electricity flipped some bits in the phone’s memory, triggering this trouble.  Fortunately, a complete reboot addressed the issue.

12:30 PM: Mom and I enjoyed our usual Mexican lunch — she had a chicken burrito and cinnamon chips, and I had two chicken tacos with cinnamon chips and Reese’s peanut butter cups.  I learned that she’s a bit dehydrated; probably from the antibiotic she’s on.  So they’re reducing the dosage, and will perform another set of labs next week.  She did get out of bed today but was very tired.

01:30 PM: We then watched most of   The Young and the Restless   in the 1st floor TV room, although I think Mom slept through most of it.  She likes the story lines but just can’t seem to stay awake for anything these days, no matter how much she likes it.

02:45 PM: Then, we went to the lobby to wait for my ride home, and talked of many miscellaneous topics.

03:30 PM: I’m home.

04:15 PM: Compared the list of payments the nursing home says we’ve made this year, with the list that we believe we’ve made.  The two are in agreement in number and date of payments and the total dollar amount of the payments.  So I’m still confused about why they say we still owe them so much.  Some of this has to do with the tax that was withheld from Mom’s pension.  We have stopped that withholding and will get the money that’d already been withheld back early next year.  But we’re still $2500 in the hole, the taxes notwithstanding.  I’ll review the account paperwork again tomorrow and hopefully will find an explanation.

05:00 PM: Called a company in Blairsville, PA to get an estimate for sound-reducing glass window units. The fellow must consult with an acoustics engineer, to determine the best glass type and configuration for my particular situation here.  This will take a couple days, but he says he’ll get back to me with a price by the end of this week.

06:00 PM: Watched the rest of today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

06:05 PM: Skipped yesterday’s episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Dancing with the Stars.

07:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Bullying: The Power To Protect Your Child.

07:20 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:15 PM: Watched the   Star Trek    episode   Doomsday Machine,   from the original series via Netflix.

10:30 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  We listened to the Pens play the Wild via Internet radio on her computer.  The Pens won.

11:15 PM: Watched the   Star Trek    episode   Return To Tomorrow,   from the original series via Netflix.

11:20 PM: My bum right heel tendon is healing nicely.  Both the pain and swelling were much reduced today.  So I’m hoping to get back on the treadmill this weekend.  This time however, I’ll be much more careful about how tightly I tie my shoes.  :-)   I think they were slightly too tight when I last worked out this past Saturday.  That, coupled with an hour and a half of fast walking worsened the injury significantly.

11:20 PM: Headed for bed.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count remained the same this time, and currently stands at 1013, which is unchanged from 1013 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

07:00 AM: I’m up.  Yet another dreary and dark autumn day outside, with drizzle, spritzing, and cool temperatures.  I’m not complaining though, because more rain means less loud motorcycles passing by here.

07:30 AM: Sister Jojo arrived to take me shopping and to visit Mom.  This morning, we’re visiting the Wal Mart in Huntingdon instead of the one in Altoona, since we’re picking up her son from college to bring him home for the weekend.

01:00 PM: Next, we headed to the nursing home to visit Mom.  She was still in bed when we arrived, and stayed in bed throughout our visit, although she did sit up to speak with us.  The nursing staff thinks that she may be reacting to the metfloxin (1 Gm) antibiotic (via IV) that they started eariler this week to fight that ongoing UTI.  Her physician is very concerned that Mom has not been able to fight these infections, and that she’s so depressed.  They’re hoping that this medicine will finally eradicate the UTI.  But she’s to receive it for four more days before they’ll know.  Her spirits seemed pretty good though she was groggy; not sleeping well again.  She asked for a stronger sleep aid but they won’t be able to administer it until early next week, assuming that her doctor approves.  I’d say Mom was half bad and half good today.

02:30 PM: We dined at Olive Garden.  I enjoyed the salad and bread sticks, along with a pepperoni and veggie pizza.

02:45 PM: We’re home.  Sister Jojo and her son came in for a minute to check out my new television and treadmill.  She also took some items from the stash of Mom’s things that we’re looking for homes for.

03:10 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  She says that the sleep study she’s enrolled in will continue through to the end of 2012.  Wow.  This is a LONG study.  But with the preliminaries so involved just to get to this point in the study, she really can’t quit, since they’d be unable to replace her at this point.  Hopefully however, the remainder of the study will be less involved, so she can visit me more.

03:15 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

05:15 PM: I’m awake again.

07:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   Dr. Phil,   called   Lisa Ling Investigates: The Secret World Of Amateur Adult Video.

07:40 PM: Facebooked for a bit. Friend count: 588 (down four). Fan count: 112 (unchanged).

08:40 PM: Watched tonight’s episodes of    NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

09:15 PM: Talked with sister Mary Ann to give her an update on Mom.

07:30 AM: [Emmy]   and I are up.  We’ll let   [Mentat]   sleep a bit longer.

09:35 AM: Leaving now for WPSBC, and the fun day social.  Back later.

09:40 PM: Twisted my ankle on a pothole on Centre Ave.  It took several minutes for the pain to subside enough to resume the walk.  But it slowly loosened up and we could continue our trek to the school.

09:45 PM: We arrived at the school to find a throng of other folks getting out of their para-transit (Access) vehicles.  We then headed back to the cafeteria area, where they were serving doughnuts and coffee.  Quite a crowd (perhaps thirty) was already there.  Hmmm, guess we should have arrived a half-hour earlier.

01:00 PM: We bowled a few frames at the school’s newly revamped bowling alleys, that now include automatic pin setting and score keeping equipment.  We did not play a complete regulation game, though these remodeled alleys appeared more “regulation” than what was there in the 70s.

02:15 PM: We then wandered down to the darts room (which used to be the biology classroom when I was a student).  A couple “experts” taught [Emmy] how to aim and throw the darts.  Eventually, she could hit the board most every time she threw.

04:15 PM: We then headed upstairs and outside to the old boys side playground area (now turned into a driveway and parking lot), where the remaining crowed was gathered.

05:30 PM: We spent the next hour plus saying goodbye to everyone and expressing how much we are looking forward to the 2012 alumni convention.  The weather all day was mostly sunny, cool, and dry with gentle breezes; a classic fall day.

05:35 PM: Then, we, along with [Tad] and his wife, were the last ones to leave the school grounds.  We headed back to   [Emmy's]   apartment.

05:45 PM: We’re back at   [Emmy's].  Boy, what a fun day we had!

06:00 PM: Leaving now for supper at   Pizza Pronto.  Back later.

07:30 PM: We finished most of the pizza we bought, and have returned to   [Emmy's].

10:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 583 (unchanged).  Fan count: 111 (unchanged).

10:30 PM: We spent the rest of the evening talking and rocking in [Emmy's]  glider rocking chairs, as syncing the hard disk drive [Mentat] brought with him with [Emmy's] drive.  But like last night, we’re quite tired.  So we’re going to bed.  Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 1048; down from 1070 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.
