09:00 AM: I’m up.  Today, for the fourth day in a row,  it’s overcast outside, with temperatures ranging in the mid twenties.  No rain is falling currently; although there is the occasional snow flake flitting about.

09:45 AM: Got Mom up and dispensed her morning meds.  These days, she has a cup of cranberry juice for breakfast, to help combat her UTI.

10:30 AM: Mom’s physical therapist arrived.

12:00 PM: The PT worked through five or six exercises with Mom.  But Mom was quite unhappy with the situation; apparently seeing no improvement in her leg muscle strength, while from the therapist’s perspective, there has been highly noticeable improvement.  She gave Mom several pep talks.  But Mom, so frustrated that these small incremental increases in strength aren’t bigger than they are, became frustrated, anxious, and started to cry.  In the end, she declared, “I’m done,” and did not want to continue with the workout.  If she is going to get stronger, it will probably be more helpful if she performs activities as part of her regular routine of living, and not so much performing specific exercises.  She doesn’t seem to enjoy exercising for the mere sake of exercising.  She never has.  But nonetheless, though she hasn’t done all of the physical challenges to build up her legs in the most efficient manner, she is nonetheless getting stronger.  Hopefully, just her buzzing about the house in her chair will increase her muscle strength enough to enable her to stand and eventually walk again.  We’ll see.

01:00 PM: Heading out on a   shopping trip   to get some flea medicine for the cats and some groceries.  Mom’s high school friend Mary Kay is driving me.  Hmmm.  What would I do without generous and compassionate people in my life?  Ooooh.  I know.  I’d starve!  :-)    Back later.

03:30 PM: We’re back.

04:45 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR and then took a little power nap.

05:00 PM: Mom’s friend Debbie visited.  Since I went shopping with Mary Kay, we won’t need to go tonight.  So Debbie gets a break.

06:15 PM: Sister Diane dropped by to drop off some Christmas wreaths for Mom.  It turns out that she left her wallet here.  I called her to inform her of this so that she wouldn’t drive herself crazy later trying to find it.  She knows about it now and will pick it up tomorrow.

10:10 PM: Talked with   [Emmy]   for an extended period this evening on the speaker phone, and while doing that, I added Susan Boyle’s   The Gift    and Olivia Newton-John’s   Christmas Wish    albums to my music library.

10:15 PM: Today’s repeater song:   Christmas On My Radio    by Olivia Newton-John.  She sings of many of the things she does at Christmas time while listening to all that great Christmas music that many radio stations play during this time of year.  I really identified with this story because for the past several years at least, [Emmy] and I are big fans of the Christmas music.  We enjoy guessing which artist is performing each song they play.  It’s fun and stokes the Christmas spirit.

12:00 AM: Worked the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   preparations.

12:30 AM: Assisted Mom in getting to bed and dispensed her night meds.  Her bedroom is nice and toasty.  In fact, you’d not know it’s cold outside from there, unless you get near the windows.  The heat is working pretty well this winter season; better in fact, since I loosened the metal duct work for a cold air return vent on her east wall.  This vent was never actually connected to the furnace, and it just so happens that it’s right above the gas heater in the back of the basement.  Opening up that duct allows warm air from that heater to rise into Mom’s bedroom.  That chased the chill away there.

01:00 AM: Bed time for me.  So good night and take care.

03:30 AM: Mom called for help.  Low blood sugar again.  I thought we’d taken care of this by lowering her nightly dose of long-acting insulin from 32 units down to 20 units.  But apparently, it’s still too high.  Blood sugar reading: 43.  I gave her some orange juice and pretzels to get it back up.  She quickly and positively responded.

03:50 AM: She’s back in her bed, and I’m going back to mine.  Good night.

08:50 AM: I’m up.  Mom’s home nurse just arrived to evaluate how she’s making out so far now that she’s home/

09:45 AM: The home nurse just left, and I think I’ll do some serious blogging; I’ve gotten pretty behind the last few days with all the business around here.

10:45 AM: Today’s repeater song:  Mercy Mercy Mercy   by   the Buckinghams.  I discovered this repeater while waiting for sister Jojo the hygienist to get to me at the dentist’s office yesterday.  This is one of so many of those oldies that I’ve heard a million times before.  But it’s brassy and electrical instrumentation and passionate yet harmonious vocals never really grabbed me much until yesterday.  Now, I just can’t stop listening to it.  Hmmmm.  Perhaps it was from this song that I learned to look for women who “knock me off my feet” and settle for no one less capable.

10:55 AM: Posted the   Mom’s Status: 2010-11-16   piece.

12:00 PM: Watched the 2010-11-14 episode of CNN’s   State of the Union with Candy Crowley   news show, titled: Bush: Two Years Later,   which featured an interview done recently with president George W. Bush along with his brother, Jeb.

01:45 PM: Called Mom’s PCP with list of prescriptions we need called in.  No one available.  So left message, requesting them to call me back.  I’ll probably have to call again tomorrow, as these requests usually go unanswered.

01:50 PM: Posted the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   piece and began preparing for this performance in earnest.

03:00 PM: Mom’s home nurse arrived to check her out.  No major problems discovered.  However, the pull mat we’ve been placing underneath Mom in her bed tends to wrinkle up and become lumpy.  Mom then develops impressions on her skin with a similar contour to these lumps.  So we need to locate a better mat; one that does not wrinkle so much, in order to avoid irritating Mom’s skin.

04:30 PM: Two of Mom’s friends dropped by as the home nurse left.  Also, sister Christine came and washed up the dishes in the sink and changed Mom’s bed for her.

06:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

10:30 PM: Helped Mom perform her preparations for bed.

11:10 PM: Worked the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   project throughout the afternoon and evening.

12:15 AM: Sat with mom in the back room and chatted.  She decided to stay in her easy chair a while longer.  So I’m going to bed.  Good night.

02:30 AM: Mom called for help; low blood sugar again.  Very strange since I gave her only 15 units of the long-acting insulin tonight. So, I got her some orange juice and some cake from sister Diane.  I also helped her transfer to her bed.  Good night again.

05:30 AM: Mom called for help; low blood sugar yet again!  More orange juice and cake provided and I helped her to the restroom.  We may have to quit the long-acting insulin altogether as Mom seems hypersensitive to it these days.

05:50 AM: Back to bed again.  Have a great night.

07:50 AM: Today’s repeater song:   Not Gonna Get Us     by    t.A.T.u., from 2003.  [Emmy]   really likes this song.  :-)

10:55 AM: Watched the 2010-08-22 and 2010-09-05 episodes of NBC’s   Meet The Press    news show on the DVR.

11:20 AM: Leaving for the nursing facility to visit Mom.  Back later.

01:15 PM: I’m back home, and will probably watch some of the Steelers Vs. Ravens game. I’ll also probably doze a bit as well.  I love napping in front of the television on a cool, sunny, fall afternoon.

03:30 PM: The Steelers just scored early in the fourth quarter to take the lead from the Ravens, 14 to 10.  Hopefully, they can hold it.

04:00 PM: The Steelers lost to the Ravens, 17 to 14.

04:35 PM: Posted the   Mom’s Status: 2010-10-03   piece.

05:15 PM: Cooked a chuck steak on this   very large   George Foreman grill that sister Jojo gave me.  While the steak turned out great, this machine is a bear to clean.  Why?  Because it can’t open it up fully while it’s sitting on the counters beside the sink since the overhead cabinets get in the way.  This complicates washing and rinsing; particularly the top grill plate.  But hey, it’s a free-bee, and at the time of its purchase, it was the biggest George Foreman available.  So it’s worth any hardship it creates I think, which is actually a very small amount.  If need be, I can clean it outside.

08:00 PM: Listened to the Penguins hockey game with   [Emmy]   on the phone.  The Pens won this one.

08:50 PM: Recorded audio journal episode   AJE-2010-10-03-20-12

11:55 PM: Watched the 2010-09-12, 2010-09-19, and 2010-09-26 episodes of NBC’s   Meet The Press    news show on the DVR.

12:00 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

08:30 AM: I’m up.

10:40 AM: iPodded to Ke$ha’s   Your Love is my Drug   repeater song.  I chuckle when recalling [Emmy's] disdain for this hit — maybe that’s why I like it so much, I don’t know.  :-)

02:15 PM: Puttered around in the front room downstairs (downstairs office), filing papers and discarding manuals and receipts for appliances which I no longer possess.  I found perhaps ten pounds of rubbish doing this.  I suppose I’ll have to go through my files at least once every five years instead of what I currently do, which is once every ten.  :-)

02:30 PM: Cheerios with sliced bananas and almond “milk.” Positively orgasmic flavor! But don’t store your Cheerios in basements for long; lest you get cereal that tastes like your cellar smells. Seriously. Yuck!

03:25 PM: I have a new all-time favorite song for the week. It’s Ke$ha’s hit  Your Love Is My Drug. Hey, this way beats out Beethoven’s   Fifth Symphony, Frampton’s   Do You Feel Like We Do, Led Zeppelin’s   Stairway to Heaven, and Charley Pride’s   Kiss An Angel Good Morning. It even surpasses Hampton the Hampster’s   Hampsterdance Song; though I had to ponder that last one for a bit to know for sure.   :-)

05:40 PM: Filed papers (receipts, manuals, information pamphlets, and so on) in the downstairs office all afternoon.  Still not done yet, but there’s only one pile of stuff left, and I’m hoping to finish that either tonight or tomorrow.

07:00 PM: I had a couple of olive oil sandwiches for supper. Take two slices of whole grain flatbread and smear about a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil all over the insides. Then, sprinkle on some fresh oregano or basil and a bit of garlic salt, and there you are. Tastes just like the dipped bread served in the finest Italian restaurants. Mmmmm mmmmm!   But it’s not very filling however. ;-)

10:00 PM: Talked with [Emmy] on the phone.  Nothing new to report.  We just help each other keep from getting too lonely.  It’s nice.

11:00 PM: Watched the 2010-08-26 and 2010-08-27 episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   news show on the DVR.

11:50 PM: Watched tonight’s episode (the season premier) of CBS’s   60 Minutes    news show on the DVR.  They covered the mosque near ground zero.  An interesting tid bit: Muslims have already been worshipping at this site for over a year, and the developer has gotten near-unanimous approval from community leaders four times now.  It seems that republicans are campaigning against this mosque the loudest.

01:00 AM: Watched   Larry King Live   on CNN.  Tonight, King, interviewed President Jimmy Carter for the last time.

01:15 AM: Signing off for tonight.  Have a good one and I’ll be back here again later on.  Take care.

08:30 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Facebooked and blogged.  Friend count: 280.  Facebook Page fan count: 52.

11:55 AM: Talked with [Emmy].  Apparently she keeps receiving bills from her former telephone and Internet provider; though she cancelled her subscription with them back in March, 2010.  I’ll look over her papers on this shortly, and see if we can figure what’s going on.

12:00 PM: Packing for trip to the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention is done.

01:00 PM: Just met with our financial planner.  Looking into a reverse mortgage.

01:20 PM: Watched the 2010-07-11 episode of   CBS’s Face The Nation   news show on the DVR.

02:15 PM: Cooked a bottom round steak, mushrooms, and onions for lunch with fresh cucumbers and dressing.  Yum!

03:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:15 PM: [Mentat's] sister just came.  She’s driving me to the Amtrak train station in Tyrone, where I’ll board the west-bound train to Pittsburgh and the   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention this weekend.  I’ll return home early should Mom’s condition degrade.  But she seems relatively stable at the moment and we have noted some slight improvements even.  So I believe that she’ll be alright while I’m gone.

04:55 PM: We just climbed onto the train and got seats together.  I sat closest to the window this time; I enjoy those ever-changing sights whizzing by; everything to farms and forests to city lights and roads and buildings taller than the trees.  Our coach is well air-conditioned as it usually is.

06:30 PM: We’ve passed Johnstown and so far, we’ve gabbed the whole trip about everything from [Mentat's] upcoming move to Ohio to my plans to buy Mom’s house.  It’s nice chatting with [Mentat].   I wish we did it more.  But if we did that, it might lose some of its appeal.  So maybe I don’t wish this.  I don’t know.  :-)

08:30 PM: I’m here a [Emmy's] now.  [Mentat] and I rode the train over and now we’re just gabbing while getting ready to head to Pizza Pronto for supper.

10:00 PM: We’re back at [Emmy's].  Mmmmm.  The pizza was spectacular.  Now we’re watching   CNN’s AC 360   news show and whipping up a bowl of raspberry cream cheese Jello.  I brought three Corelleware bowls with me so [Emmy] can make this Jello dish by herself.  She bought Jello and cream cheese at her shopping trip earlier today.

11:45 PM: After watching   KDKA TV’s Local News at 11:00 PM, we played some music on [Emmy's] computer from the group   Shiny Toy Guns; their version of the  Major Tom   song, originally done by   Peter Schilling.  We found that they also did a remake of  Blue Oyster Cult‘s hit   I’m Burnin’ For You.  Both remakes we like.  Both of these make great repeater songs.

12:00 AM: We’re heading to bed now that I’ve got blankets laid out on [Emmy's] living room floor for she and I, and she’s put new sheets on her bed for [Mentat].  So enjoy your night and I’ll write more as time permits tomorrow and over the weekend.  Good night.

09:45 AM: I’m up.

09:55 AM: We didn’t read any of the   Frankenstein   book yesterday, as we’ve been busy with numerous activities reserved for summer — swimming, lounging on the porch, visiting friends, and so on.  But hopefully tonight, we’ll read a few chapters.

10:00 AM: iPodded and Facebooked.  Friend count: 271,  and the fans count on my official Facebook page is now 48.  Interestingly, 37 of my friends like my fan page but the total people who like it is 48. This means, that 11 strangers (people who have not yet befriended me) have discovered and decided to like the page on their own; without any solicitation from me.  So with an admittedly small voice, my writing nonetheless is starting to speak people on its own; without my help; an encouraging development to be sure.

12:25 PM: We read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

02:15 PM: Heading out for an afternoon with sister Mary Ann.  We’ll return later.

05:40 PM: We’re back home again.

07:55 PM: We read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

08:30 PM: iPodded.  Today’s repeater song: Fly by Sugar Ray.  I skated to this song my first year living in Philadelphia in 1997 and 1998, at the Palace rink and the far northeast and the Wow Family Fun Center nearby.  Wonderful fun, and great memories.  I truly miss the Palace, the boulevard, and the Wow Family Fun Center.  Every so often, I get the urge to move back.  But as a writer who is only just now beginning to bud, my finances are too constrained at present for such a big change.  So for now, I’ll just keep dreaming.  I may go back someday.  I don’t know.  While my memories of Philly are sweet, I also realize that it’s quite the dangerous place to live, as I found out from my experience of being mugged down there in 1999.  Plus, Philly did not bring the women into my life that I’ve missed for so long; though I thought when I moved there that within a year, I’d be living with my dream girl.  So if I do decide to return there, I must be sure not to do so based on delusions.  Philly can only do so much for me.  It, in and of itself, will not fill the emptiness in my heart.

10:20 PM: Watched the 2010-07-09 episode of   Dr. Phil   on the DVR, about parents losing control of their households to their children.  He and his guests also discussed how to determine what you really want to do in your life.  Their Answer: Ask yourself what you would do if you only had 24 hours to live.  If you’re honest with yourself, the answer to that question is probably what you would want to do with much of your life.

01:30 AM: We read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

01:40 AM: Bed time.  Good night.

09:45 PM: Added the February through March, 2010 issues of Promo Only’s Country Radio music series to my DJ library.

10:20 AM: Sent in my dues and fees for the upcoming   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention this August.

10:45 AM: Ordered this week’s batch of prescription meds that Mom getting low on.  We’ll pick them up sometime in the next few days.

02:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

03:15 PM: Added the April through June, 2010 issues of Promo Only’s Country Radio music series to my DJ library.  Now, it’s nap time.

05:45 PM: I’m back up again.

07:55 PM: Talked to   [Ron]  just now.  He’s going to camp and I was just telling him how much I was going to miss being there with him and the crew.  He and a few others are definitely the high points of camp.  Perhaps we’ll go next year but I’m glad we took this year off.

08:30 PM: [Mentat] called to confirm about tomorrow, and to ride me for not yet sending in my alumni convention check.

09:15 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.

09:30 PM: Bleached my sheets and pillow cases tonight, in preps for [Mentat's] visit tomorrow.  They came out looking much whiter than is typical; probably because I used two cups of bleach instead of my usual one cup.  Plus, I let them soak for six hours in very warm water, and I only filled up the washer with just enough water to cover them (about a half-tub full).  I’ll have to remember this recipe the next time I do them.

11:20 PM: Talked with [Emmy].  Told her that I spoke with [Ron] earlier about camp.    She asked about him and enjoyed hearing that he’s really looking forward to attending next week.

12:40 AM: Put the clean sheets and pillow cases back on my bed and iPodded for a little while.  Repeater songs today include:

  • Dream Baby – Glenn Campbell
  • Una Paloma Blanka – George Baker Selection
  • I Like It [With Rap] – Enrique Iglesias with Pitbull
  • The Things We Do For Love – 10cc
  • Dynamite – Taio Cruz
  • Telephone – Lady Gaga
  • Turn Me On – Kevin Lyttle
  • Your Love Is My Drug – Ke$ha
  • No Sugar Tonight – The Guess Who
  • Hooray For Hazel – Tommy Roe

They’re coming out with some highly energizing music these days.

01:15 AM: Watched a bit of CNN’s AC 360 but now, I’m done for the day.  So good night, and I’ll be ready for more of life as soon as I get some rest.  :-)   Sweet dreams.

08:57 AM: You’re pining for Friday already? This was a short work week too.

10:39 AM: Yep. I know days like that. :-) In fact, I’ll be doing laundry this weekend.

11:10 PM:  Oh, I’m great, Barb! Things are very different now though. No more large-scale software development. Instead, I write full time, DJ now and then, and care for my Mom and her property the rest of my waking hours.

I’m so glad to hear from you. Always wanted to thank you for supporting my move to Philadelphia all those years ago, for that … See Moretransition really got me moving in the RIGHT direction. But now that you’re not my boss anymore, I must admit that I’ve always wondered whether you pushed to help me get to Philly so much because you really wanted to help me, or you just wanted to get me out of your hair. *smile*

So, what have you been up to? I see that you’re no longer in Ohio either. I hope you are well, and that you stop by any time.

Take care.
Tom

11:29 PM: Thanks for [the compliment], Barb. You were a great manager by the way. My problem was that I just didn’t like being managed — by ANY one. :-) Then, by the time 2003 came around, I realized that this would never change. So I decided to get out on my own. There’s a lot less money out here at present. But I’m a hundred times happier, and that’s worth so much more than a fat paycheck. I have no regrets about leaving.

You’re RVing? Wow! That sounds like an awesome lifestyle. Enjoy yourself, because you deserve it. I hope you get some great pictures, and that you have a very long and healthy retirement; whenever that is, you decide to retire.

12:00 AM:  Tom Hesley   attended his last Lions Club meeting, as he must now devote more time to writing. He wrote 2500 words, browsed around the Internet radio spectrum, laundered three loads, listened to Rick Astley’s hit song: Together Forever a total of eight times (it’s a great repeater song), followed the oil spill coverage on CNN, and reconnected with a former boss (so nice) here on FB. Now, he’s out of words. So he’s going to bed. He says good night to all, and that he’s looking forward to returning here tomorrow.

02:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:00 PM: [Emmy] and I grabbed a couple of blue beach towels and went down to lay out on the grass beside the pavilion.  With the warmer temperatures today along with the blazing sun, it didn’t take us long to break a hearty sweat; and all we were doing was relaxing.  :-)    So now we’re back here at the house.

05:00 PM: I napped while [Emmy] chatted with [Jack] on the phone.

07:30 PM: We bought   chicken wraps from Sheetz   for supper.  Delicious!

08:55 PM: We walked for the past hour and a half at the cemetery, and watched the sun set.  First time in nearly two years that I’ve visited there.  The countless aromas of the various flowers that people had placed on loved ones’ graves made the leg-powered cruise most pleasant.

09:15 PM: Posted the  Found Judy After Twelve Years  and  Hello Again To Judy  pieces to the    Tom’s Love Quest   blog.

10:30 PM: Watched today’s episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   and   the    Love Triangle   episode of    Dr. Phil   on the DVR.

12:20 AM: Facebooked a while, took the garbage out, and iPodded.  Today’s repeater song: Grand Funk’s  Some Kind Of Wonderful.

12:30 AM: My eye lids are getting heavy; my  “alarm clock”  that’s telling me that it’s time for bed.  So enjoy your night and I’ll see you right back here in less than twelve hours. Good night.
