10:45 AM: I’m up.

11:00 AM: Facebooked for perhaps ten minutes. Friend count: 614 (unchanged). Fan count: 114 (unchanged).

12:30 PM: Cooked a pancake breakfast for   [Emmy]   and   [Mentat], which they seemed to enjoy thoroughly.  I made buttered buckwheat pancakes with natural maple syrup, and gave them juice, milk, and tea to drink.

01:30 PM: Went to Sheetz to pick up three cups of hot cocoa; they give it away free on holidays like this one.

03:45 PM: Then, we hung out here in my office, gabbing and saying good-bye.

04:15 PM: [Mentat's]  sister arrived to take him back to his mother’s place.  I believe he’ll spend the rest of his visit to this area with her before he heads back to his home in Ohio in several days.

04:25 PM: Almost immediately upon [Mentat] leaving, he called back to tell me that he forgot his pocket radio.  He left it in my upstairs bedroom.  I quickly located it for him, and he said that someone would come by to retrieve it sometime tomorrow.  Got you covered ]Mentat].

06:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of CBS’s  Face The Nation   via the DVR.

02:00 PM: Worked on getting this blog caught up; I’m perhaps ten days behind on these journal entries.

07:40 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   broadcast via the DVR.

09:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of NBC’s   Meet The Press    weekly news broadcast via the DVR.

11:00 PM: We’re heading to bed.  Good night and do stop back tomorrow for more content.  :-)    Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count for this run is ???, up from ??? at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

08:15 AM: I’m up.

08:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 586 (up one).  Fan count: 113 (unchanged).

10:30 AM: Conducting final cleanup, in preps for the Steelers football party I’m hosting this afternoon.

11:00 AM: Sister Mary Ann arrived.  She brought me some new throw pillows and a throw blanket for the couches and floor in the living room, some Buffalo chicken dip, and some sauerkraut and hot dogs for our half-time dinner.

12:00 PM: Sister Mary Ann assisted me in further furniture organization around the first floor here at the house, vacuuming, and laying of some mats around the first floor to help cut down on the mud and dust that seems to so quickly build up on the floors around here.

12:30 PM: Sister Jojo and her family, Sister Christine and her family minus Grant, and sister Diane arrived, bringing ice cream, carrot cake, ketchup and mustard, and snacks for the party.

12:45 PM: Sister Jojo helped me wipe up the cellar steps; much cat dirt of all kinds from foot prints of litter to vomit and other excrements.  But the steps are clean now.

01:00 PM: The Steelers football game begins as Mary Ann’s girls along with Joann’s Catie play Monopoly in what used to be the east sitting room.

03:00 PM: Half-time, approximately.  Everyone’s eating.

03:30 PM: The other men and I carried one of the two picnic tables from the yard up onto the east porch.  These tables, which Dad made back in the early nineties, are beginning to look a bit ragged from sitting out in the weather for so long.  The wood itself looks pretty good but it’s the paint that’s peeling profusely.  So, I’ll keep one picnic table here, under cover of the porch roof, and sister Christine will take the other one down to her place and sit it near their fire pit.  They’re not going to burn the table.  No.  Instead, it will provide there some additional table space for the 4th of July and Labor Day parties we often enjoy there.

03:45 PM: Brother in-law Richard, showed me how to measure the windows here in the first floor office, and came up with some great ideas on the type of glass to get, and how to install it for maximal traffic noise reducing effect.  We took rough measurements, and I’ll call the glass company tomorrow for an estimate on the three panes of laminated glass needed for these windows.

05:00 PM: The game is over.  The Steelers lost to the Houston Texans.

05:30 PM: All relatives except for sister Mary Ann have gone home.  She and her family stayed in order to visit Mom tonight, and to take me up to Sears to check if the treadmill I purchased there a few days back has fallen in price at all.  We’re leaving now.  Back later.

06:30 PM: We visited Mom.  She’s doing well.  I think part of her wanted to join us at her house to watch the Steelers.  But she feared that had she come, she’d have not wished to leave again.  She thought therefore that such a visit would be too hard emotionally.  So she declined.

07:00 PM: It turns out that the treadmill I purchased at Sears last week went on sale a day or two afterwards.  Tonight, it’s $600 cheaper.  So I got a refund for that amount.  Plus, the floor model treadmill I had originally purchased, the found to have some structural troubles.  So they’re shipping me a brand new treadmill from the factory.  Wow.  No only did I get a much better price, but a “virgin” treadmill as well.  I’m glad sister Mary Ann pushed me to investigate the sales and lower prices that can sometimes happen.  Now, I’ll have more money for this year’s Christmas lighting project.

07:20 PM: Since sister Mary Ann saved me so much money on the treadmill, I offered to buy her whole family supper.  So, they opted to purchase dinner from Best Way Pizza, not too far from here.  We’re there now, ordering.

07:45 PM: We’re home.  We’re eating the pizza here, while watching tonight’s episode of CBS’s   60 Minutes    news broadcast.  Andy Rooney is doing his last regular commentary tonight.  He’s finally retiring, at 92 years of age.

08:30 PM: Sister Mary Ann and family have left for their home in State College.  What a nice day, filled with great company of family.  Hmmm.  I think I might have to start hosting more parties and get-together, as it sure helps stifle that proverbial cold draft of loneliness around here.  I truly enjoyed myself.

08:50 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

09:35 PM: Watched today’s episode of NBC’s   Meet The Press   weekly public affairs news show.

10:20 PM: Heard from   [Mentat].   His girlfriend is looking into buying a new Dell computer, and so he was wondering about a cheap or free email reader.  I suggested either Thunder Bird or Windows Live Mail.  He may purchase a cheap version of Microsoft Office in order to get Outlook.  But I think they’re just gonig to wait until they actually get the new machine in-house before deciding.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count held steady this time, and currently stands at 1036; unchanged from 1036 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

Watched a couple more of my old favorite Star Trek original show episodes via Netflix and my new TV: The Tholean Web   and   The Alternative Factor.

01:00 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

Log

07:30 AM: All three of us are up.

08:00 AM: Put the air bed away and folded up and stowed the blankets as well.  Stripped   [Emmy's]  bed.

10:00 AM: Cooked and cleaned up from a buckwheat pancake breakfast for the three of us.  We enjoyed some pure maple syrup with them as well.  Quite tasty, and all who ate agreed.  :-)

10:55 AM: Our taxi arrived.  So we’re leaving   [Emmy's]   and heading for the Megabus stop at the convention center downtown.

12:15 PM: Stood at the Megabus stop with [Mentat].  We talked about our respective relationships and aspirations.  He’s looking forward to coming home for New Years.

12:20 PM: I’m leaving the convention center bus stop now, to walk the few blocks to the Amtrak train station.  Mostly sunny and warm today.

12:30 PM: I reached the train station.

01:00 PM: Ran into a couple of the folks who also attended the fun day social yesterday.  They’re also riding the train, but way further than I.  They’re getting off at Paioli.  I was unable to sit with them, as the Altoona folks (myself) must sit near the rear of the train.

03:00 PM: Took an hour-long nap.  The stopping at Johnstown woke me up.  The train is moderately crowded today, but lots of empty seats.  I nearly always am able to sit by myself.

03:50 PM: Just after leaving Johnstown, we got behind a couple of slow-moving freight trains that will delay our arrival in Altoona significantly.

04:25 PM: We’re rounding the Horshoe Curve now.

04:40 PM: We’ve finally reached Altoona.  Sister Jojo got tired of waiting. So she drove on over to visit Mom.  She communicated this to me via my cell phone.  I told her to go ahead and that I’d walk over once I got to Altoona.

04:45 PM: I’ve arrived at Mom’s nursing home.  Mom is in bed.  So we visited with her in her room.  Though in bed, she was quite awake.  I gathered up all her dirty clothes into a laundry bag.  I’ll wash them and take them back up to her later this week.

06:00 PM: I’m home.

08:00 PM: Watched all pending episodes of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.  I got a couple episodes behind due to the Pittsburgh trip.

10:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 582 (down one).  Fan count: 111 (unchanged).

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  She says that she really enjoyed herself this weekend.  Good night.

12:05 AM: The daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count fell this time, and currently stands at 1042; down from 1048 at last check.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

07:30 AM: [Emmy]   and I are up.  We’ll let   [Mentat]   sleep a bit longer.

09:35 AM: Leaving now for WPSBC, and the fun day social.  Back later.

09:40 PM: Twisted my ankle on a pothole on Centre Ave.  It took several minutes for the pain to subside enough to resume the walk.  But it slowly loosened up and we could continue our trek to the school.

09:45 PM: We arrived at the school to find a throng of other folks getting out of their para-transit (Access) vehicles.  We then headed back to the cafeteria area, where they were serving doughnuts and coffee.  Quite a crowd (perhaps thirty) was already there.  Hmmm, guess we should have arrived a half-hour earlier.

01:00 PM: We bowled a few frames at the school’s newly revamped bowling alleys, that now include automatic pin setting and score keeping equipment.  We did not play a complete regulation game, though these remodeled alleys appeared more “regulation” than what was there in the 70s.

02:15 PM: We then wandered down to the darts room (which used to be the biology classroom when I was a student).  A couple “experts” taught [Emmy] how to aim and throw the darts.  Eventually, she could hit the board most every time she threw.

04:15 PM: We then headed upstairs and outside to the old boys side playground area (now turned into a driveway and parking lot), where the remaining crowed was gathered.

05:30 PM: We spent the next hour plus saying goodbye to everyone and expressing how much we are looking forward to the 2012 alumni convention.  The weather all day was mostly sunny, cool, and dry with gentle breezes; a classic fall day.

05:35 PM: Then, we, along with [Tad] and his wife, were the last ones to leave the school grounds.  We headed back to   [Emmy's]   apartment.

05:45 PM: We’re back at   [Emmy's].  Boy, what a fun day we had!

06:00 PM: Leaving now for supper at   Pizza Pronto.  Back later.

07:30 PM: We finished most of the pizza we bought, and have returned to   [Emmy's].

10:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 583 (unchanged).  Fan count: 111 (unchanged).

10:30 PM: We spent the rest of the evening talking and rocking in [Emmy's]  glider rocking chairs, as syncing the hard disk drive [Mentat] brought with him with [Emmy's] drive.  But like last night, we’re quite tired.  So we’re going to bed.  Good night.

09:30 AM: I’m up.

10:15 AM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 583 (up two).  Fan count: 111 (unchanged).

11:00 AM: Spackled a small hole on the door wall in [Emmy's] bathroom.  I made this hole a year or two ago, when I put up a hand towel hanger ring for her.  We discovered that we could not use this hole, as the electrical box on the other side of this wall prevented sufficient penetration for a strong mount.

11:50 AM: Heading out to lunch at our favorite Indian restaurant.  Back later.

01:15 PM: Walked   [Emmy]   back to her apartment.  Now, heading to WPSBC to meet [Tad].  We have some banking business to take care of today for the   WPSBC Alumni Association.

01:45 PM: [Tad] and I are leaving the school for the bank.  We’re walking.

02:00 PM: The meeting with the banker begins…

03:15 PM: As [Tad] is the current president of the   WPSBC Alumni Association,   he must be authorized to sign checks and conduct any other necessary business with the alumni association’s checking account.  However, due to missing information and inconsistent data that the bank had on file pertaining to our current checking account, the banker suggested that we start up a new business checking account.  We initiated that process today, and [Tad] has been fully authorized as a signer on the new account.

04:00 PM: [Tad] and I then walked to Dunkin’ Donuts for some coffee, to sort of, unwind and get out of business banking mode.  Then, with the rain beginning to fall, his wife came along in her car and graciously offered me a ride back to [Emmy's].  I indeed took her up on it.  I bade [Tad] and his wife [Morra] farewell.  I’ll see them tomorrow at the alumni fun day.

04:10 PM: Arrived at   [Emmy's].

06:00 PM: [Emmy] and I walked to CVS Pharmacy to pick up some WD-40 spray lubricant.  She’s got a kitchen faucet that squeaks obtrusively when actuated, and I hope that spraying the WD-40 underneath its coverings and into the inner mechanism will quiet it.

07:00 PM: We also stopped in at SuperCuts, where I purchased my monthly haircut for $10.

07:30 PM: We’re back at [Emmy's] apartment, preparing for   [Mentat's]   arrival in a couple hours.

09:00 PM: We made up   [Mentat's]   bed as we waited for him.

08:50 PM: [Mentat]   arrived as   [Emmy]   watched a new prime time show on CBS: A Gifted Man.

11:00 PM: We spent the rest of the evening catching up and syncing hard disk drives.  But we’re all tired though excited about the social at the school tomorrow.  So we’re heading to bed.  Good night.

08:45 AM: I’m up.  It’s overcast outside, and temps in the  60s.

09:15 AM: Leaving now for walk 61 of 100 for 2011, to the south cemetery.  Back later.

10:20 AM: I’m back home.  For the past few days,

I’ve taking my podcast iPod on the walks with me, and thus, I’ve been catching up on the many Dr. Joy Browne episodes that I’m behind on.  Listened to all hours of the 2008-10-28, 2008-10-29, 2011-10-30, and 2011-10-31 shows.

10:30 AM: Sister Diane was waiting for me when I returned home from the walk.  She had planned some running around today and invited me to join her.  So, off I went.

11:00 AM: We drove to the recycling place in Pine Croft to drop off some of her rubbish and recyclables.

11:15 AM: Next, we drove to Oak Springs Winery, to pick up a few bottles with customized labels (birthday gifts for a few of sister Diane’s friends).

11:45 AM: Then, we dropped off some clothes she wanted to give to the Salvation Army.

11:50 AM: Our last stop on the trip was a visit to sister Jojo.

12:30 PM: We hung out on Jojo’s porch, talking of the coming fall season, end-of-summer flowers, and other light topics.

12:40 PM: I’m back home.

12:45 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

01:30 PM: I’m awake again.

01:35 PM: Heading out now to cut the grass, for the fifth time this year.  Is barely grew throughout July and most of August.  But over the last week or two, with all the rain we’ve been getting, the grass has turned green again and grown several inches.  It needs cut.  Back later.

04:00 PM: I’ve finished with the lawn tractor portion of the grass cutting.  The next time we have good weather, I’ll break out the weed whacker.

05:30 PM: Talked with [Mentat] to prepare for our get-together in September in Pittsburgh.

05:50 PM: Facebooked a bit.  Friend count: 564.  Fan count: 111.

06:20 PM: Watched the Hurricane Irene coverage on CNN.

06:20 PM: Leaving now for walk 62 of 100 in 2011, to the south cemetery again.  Back later.

06:40 PM: I’m back home, early.  Had to end the walk after just 20 minutes due to the appearance of threatening weather, including dark clouds from the south east, mildly forceful wind gusts, and rain.  I know we weren’t supposed to see any weather from the hurricane.  Yet those dark clouds appeared in the south east part of the sky, which would in fact be the direction of the hurricane.  So I think we did get a little something from it.

10:00 PM: Downloaded lots of music via Promo Only’s POOL application.  It’s getting harder to keep up with their updates, as they’ve begun publishing lots more music to this service.  But though I’m not really a DJ anymore, I’ll keep updating my music library just in case I get requests to play at occasional parties.

10:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy].  She’s been following the hurricane news coverage for much of the day too.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count dropped again, and currently stands at 1341; down from 1374 the last time I checked.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:10 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

WPEZ Radio Memories

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

I discovered   WPEZ FM Radio   (AKA: The Stereo Z) upon return to school at WPSBC, in the fall of 1973.  They filled the void left by the format change of 13-Q FM (WSHH) from top 40 to beautiful music format during that summer.  Though I was devastated to learn of the passing of WKTQ Radio’s FM side back to softer musical fair, my sadness was countermanded by the new WPEZ, which offered a similar format to 13Q, and a much stronger FM signal.  Plus, they broadcast in stereo from the beginning.  13-Q FM was mono.

Like radio station WKTQ, WPEZ FM 94.5 ran many cash radio contests though they didn’t pay nearly as much per win as did 13-Q.  Yet the winners seemed to get just as excited at their telephone triumphs of $50 or $100 (typical); probably because they got to talk to a live charismatic DJ in addition to winning the money, which the WPEZ DJs tended to be indeed.

WPEZ radio’s big slogan was “WPEZ plays less commercials,” and during the first year or so, that seemed to be quite true.  They indeed did run very few commercials, and this was a big lure for us kids, who just wanted to hear the big hit music and not a bunch of talk and squawk.

However, they also played the same songs quite often; highly repetitious.  In late 1973, I think they spun the Steve Miller Band’s hit: The Joker, every fifteen to thirty minutes.  I remember commenting in amazement to [Mentat] about it one fall Friday afternoon as we waited for the bus home.  He said that he’d asked a WPEZ DJ why they played the same stuff so much, and the DJ grumbled that he didn’t like playing songs over and over.  But that’s what the listeners wanted, he told [Mentat].  So they must have also gotten many requests for Grand Funk’s   We’re An American Band, and The Locomotion  singles, along with Led Zeppelin’s classic  Stairway to Heaven, Paul Simon’s Love Me Like A Rock, and the Edgar Winter Group’s Free Ride hits.  They ran these songs into the ground.

In the morning, Jane Clark read the news two or perhaps three times an hour, opposite of morning drive DJ Striker McGuire.  Originally, McGuire worked the 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM slot but got promoted to the 6:00 to 10:00 AM shift sometime in 1975 if memory serves.  I used to listen to him on my portable GE TV radio just prior to assembly at 8:30 AM, and get a chuckle from his jokes.  One time he said something nasty that I’m sorry I missed.  But for months afterward, WPEZ periodically ran this announcement from their general manager, apologizing for “the comments of Stryker McGuire.”  To this day, I still do not know what he said, and regretfully so.

DJ Jim Ryan hosted the 6:00 to 10:00 PM spot throughout the mid 1970s.  He was funny in the style of 13-Q’s Jackson Armstrong in that he’d try and see just how much he could get away with saying, and when he’d utter something totally outrageous, he’d play this tape of a bunch of guys going, “Whooooah, whooooooah, whooooooah!” to call even more attention to his borderline risqué’ comments.

Several of us rode a weekly bus from our home towns in and around Altoona to our school in Pittsburgh.  We’d make this trip every Sunday, and come back home again each Friday.  Most of us carried FM radios on these trips, and WPEZ 94.5 FM was perhaps the last Pittsburgh station to fade out as our east-bound bus topped Cresson mountain on Fridays.  At 50,000 watts effective radiated power, WPEZ had perhaps the “loudest” FM signal in its region and beyond.  I could even get them here at home faintly, if I swiveled the radio antenna the right way.

However, the local cable company (Warner Cable at the time) also offered an FM radio service during the 1970s through sometime in the early 2000s, and they carried The Stereo Z as well.  Once I learned how to hook this up to my radio, I fooled no more with those telescopic antennas that I was always breaking anyhow.  Cable made those obsolete, and my parents, wishing not to buy me new ones all the time did not help matters either.

Until I upgraded to cable service in my bedroom though, and after I’d broken the antennas off all the radios I had, I spent many a weekend trying to pull in WPEZ Radio FM clearly in my Bellwood bedroom using other sorts of antennae.  I’d string wires from old extension cords and motor windings all around the ceilings in my room as well as in the hall and up the stairs into the attic.  I even bought an FM dipole antenna from Radio Shack, hoping to get WPEZ  better.  A sympathizing ham radio friend, aware of my struggle to receive “the Z” DX-style, gave me a tube type RF amplifier that functioned between 54 and 98 Mhz.  So, it could amplify WPEZ’s 94.5 Mhz. signal, making it quite strong.  But the darn thing added so much hash and noise to the signal that, though stronger, the reception was no clearer by any means.  Still though, trying to listen to WPEZ at over a hundred miles away taught me much about radio basics and making antennas. I sure wish I would have owned a Beam Box FM antenna.  That might have worked better than the amplifier and strengthened the signal without adding all the noise.

On one warm spring day in 1975, I awoke to find WPEZ’s signal coming in just as strongly as if I was in Pittsburgh hearing it.  For the entire morning, it reverberated wall-to-wall.  Had I finally found an antenna configuration that worked?  Well, I had.  But my antennas weren’t what brought it in on that day.  Indeed, it would be decades before I’d learn of tropospheric ducting (a phenomenon on VHF frequencies that allows broadcast signals to travel much greater distances than is typical for them).  Changing temperatures and air pressures in the atmosphere create the so-called ducts, in which the signals travel quite far, just as water is carried through pipes to distant cities.  Unfortunately, these “air ducts” constantly change position, length, and number.  It turned out that I was lucky to receive WPEZ as long that day as I had.  Just after lunch, their signal began to fade, and by 2:00 PM, had all but completely disappeared.  Learning that my antennas were not all that brought WPEZ from Pittsburgh to Bellwood depressed me for some days, and I had to seek counsel from my electronics teacher to feel better about the whole incident.

From the fall of 1974 to the fall of 1976, WPEZ FM was my primary source of new music and news while at school.  At the beginning of 10th grade however, WTAE FM changed into an automated-style top 40 station that for the first several months anyhow, played absolutely no commercials.  This new station on the block (96 KX) captivated me; particularly the no-commercials part, the automation (everything was run by computers), and the KX Call Girl sweetened the KX pot even more.  Then, WPEZ failed to measure up; the same that happened to 13-Q when WPEZ came to town.  Though WPEZ continued for several more years, I tended to listen to them less.

But WPEZ’s role in my teenage musical evolution was as profound as 13-Q’s had been in pre adolescence.  During seventh and eighth grades, you could have taken the tuning knobs away from all of my radios, and I probably wouldn’t have cared so long as they were all tuned to WPEZ Radio.   They changed format again in the early 1980s and changed their call letters back to what they’d been before the WPEZ hoopla; WWSW FM.

02:00 PM: Heated up some ham and bean soup for lunch.

03:00 PM: We’re listening to this afternoon’s Penguins hockey game against the New York Rangers.

03:45 PM: I’m taking a nap.  Back later.

04:25 PM: I’m up again.

04:30 PM: I just heard from   [Mentat].  He’s looking for replacement bearings for his Best glider rocking chair.  Before he moved to Ohio last October, I rotated the bearings for him, to solve a squeaking, grinding noise his chair was making.  At that time, one of the eight bearings was binding, and applying oil to it did not help.  It seemed to be coming apart with the center shaft showing much side-to-side play.

04:30 PM: I recommended that he check out the    Glider Chairs   web site.  They have all sorts of parts for these chairs as well as what appear to be the correct-sized bearings for his  Best rocking chair.  I find gliding rocking chairs to be the best rockers that money can buy.  But they do have their problems, especially for people like   [Mentat]   and myself, who rock in them for hours a day.  That’s why I have several gliders here at my house; to spread the love (and wear) around.

I have not installed these, no.   But yes, one would have to remove the nuts on all eight bearing joints of [Mentat's] chair, and separate the top of the chair from the base, just like I did in October, in order to replace these.  I don’t think he’d be able to swap out the noisy bearing simply by removing its nut alone.  Why?  The wood in that chair is hard and will not bend much without cracking.  So, I’d advise against force-separating the two pieces between which the bearing is located; not without removing all the other ones as well to loosen up the whole assembly.

04:41 PM: The second period in the hockey game just ended.  However, the Pens are losing to the Rangers, 5 to 2.  They started out looking very good with a 2 to 0 lead in the first period.  But it’s been downhill for the Penguins ever since.

04:57 PM: It warmed considerably outside today.  Currently, the temperature is 48 degrees on our east parch.  It’s been windy and partly sunny all day.

07:00 PM: Our “pre Valentine’s Day” dinner here tonight consisted of two loin beef steaks, fried vegetables, and pomegranate blueberry juice. Simple, compared to sister Mary Ann’s, which consisted of steaks, real crab cakes from Maryland, and several other courses.  Still though, ours was plenty tasty just the same, and a whole lot cheaper to boot.  :-)

09:40 PM: Watched the 2011-02-08 and 2011-02-09 (Bossy Husbands) episodes of   Dr. Phil   on the DVR.

11:25 PM: Surfed the Internet and Facebooked in little sessions throughout the evening.  Friend count: 426, Fan count: 102.

11:30 PM: Gave [Emmy] one of her Valentine’s Day gifts.  It’s a red and white bear with a puffy heart in its left hand that says “Kiss me” on it.

12:25 PM: We sat around and talked for an hour before growing too tired to think strait.

12:30 AM: Bed time at last.  More later.  Good night.

12:00 PM: We’re all up.

01:00 PM: I went over to Sheetz and fetched us all some hot chocolate.  It’s free today.

04:00 PM: We just hung out throughout the afternoon, talking about our plans and resolutions for this new year.

04:30 PM: [Mentat's]   sister came to take him back to Tyrone.  He’s heading back home to Ohio early next week.  It was sure nice seeing him again after a couple months, and we’re already looking forward to July, when he comes in for the July 4th holiday, and fireworks at DelGrosso’s amusement  park.

07:45 PM: [Emmy]   watched a bit of television while I admired our Christmas tree in Mom’s sitting room, iPodding a bit.

08:00 PM: They’re running the NHL Winter Classic tonight at Heinz Field (unusual location for a Penguins hockey game).  The Penguins are playing the Washington Capitals, and we’re listening to the game on the Internet radio in the front room.  Man, I’m still wiped out from last night’s celebration; though I drank not a drop.  It must have been the lateness of the hour and the stress of preparing for the event that tired me so.  Anyway, I’m planning on getting lots of sleep tonight.

10:30 PM: The Penguins lost the Winter Classic this time.  The Caps played and indisputably outstanding hockey game, and so, deserved to win.  Congratulations Washington.

12:15 AM: Heading to bed now.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

10:00 AM: We’re all up.   Today, now that I’ve got all the new music I have in my music library, I’m syncing all hard drives and performing final computer tests to make sure that the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31  gig tonight goes without any glitches.

01:00 PM: I went over to Sheetz and bought us all foot-long steak subs and hot chocolate for lunch.  We thought we’d fill up on some relatively decent food before going to the party tonight, so that we’re less apt to eat a lot of junk there.

03:30 PM: All music hard drives have now been populated with the new music except for one.  This drive, upon connection, started this rhythmic clicking noise, and my computer would not read it.  I think this Seagate unit is still under warranty.  But I’ll check on that next week.  Hopefully, they’ll send me a new one for free.

05:30 PM: We’re leaving now with nephew Grant for the New Years party.  Back later.

07:00 PM:  The    DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   gig is under way.  I experienced some Winamp Media Library configuration issues that scared me a little.  When double-clicking on single songs in the library, instead of just one song being copied to the play list editor, all the songs in the library view were copied.  This made it difficult to manage the play list and to find the song I wanted to play next, as I had to scroll through lots of “noise” songs in the play list first.  But fortunately, close examination of Winamp’s Media Library settings revealed some values that had changed when I installed the latest version of Winamp a couple days ago.  I changed these back to my preferred settings and the above problem disappeared.  *Phew!*

09:00 PM: The dance floor began to fill with mostly younger folk, but curiously, they did not request as much music this year as last.  Still though, there was plenty of dancing by all.  The adults hung out in the kitchen for the most part, and it seemed that everyone had a camera.  All my sisters stopped by the “DJ Booth” to make sure that [Emmy] and [Mentat} had plenty to eat and drink, and to chat a little.  Very nice.

10:00 PM: Noticed that music searches take noticeably longer at this gig than at previous ones; probably due to all the extra audio files I have in my collection these days.   I now have just over 92040 files, and the Winamp Media Library search engine appears to be bogging down.  Searches now take several to ten seconds to complete.  I'm used to them taking  less than a second on this computer.  Oh well, I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet in the new year and switch from Media Library over to Windows Search.  That seems much faster.  However doing this will involve writing an updated search filter DLL file that follows Windows Search communication protocols.  Unfortunately, the filter I wrote several years back for the Windows Indexing Service is not compatible with Windows Search.  The bigger my media collection becomes, the more necessary will be this effort to complete.  In the meantime however, I'll narrow the selection of watch folders I include in my Media Library index so as to exclude my old time radio shows or audio books.  I never play these at gigs anyhow, and this should shrink the number of indexed files considerably and therefore, reduce search times commensurately.   This will be especially helpful on my older and thus, slower laptop computers that I use at the gigs.

11:50 PM: I ended the formal part of the gig with a couple slow dances and finished up with Hanson's Silent Night Medley piece.  This drew many onto the dance floor that had not been there before, although I can't take all the credit for this as people had started to gather in the dance area to watch the ball fall in Times Square.

12:00 AM: 2011 is here!

12:20 AM: I began an informal music session, where I took requests from mostly the adults in the room.  These mostly consisted of classic and modern rock tunes.  No more dancing though.

01:35 AM: Mom called from the hospital to wish us all a happy new year.  She sounds better than yesterday but we still don't know much about how long they'll keep her, or if she's even going to be able to come right home after discharge.  She may have to return to the nursing facility to build back up her upper body strength.

01:45 AM: We're all running out of steam.  So I ended all music and packed up my equipment and headed to the kitchen to socialize a little and to get one last bite of holiday food.

02:15 AM: Well, the New Year celebration is over and we're back home.  Sister Christine and her husband drove the three of us  ([Mentat],  [Emmy],   and myself) back home.  I am very tired.

02:45 AM: We talked fondly of the celebration that just ended.  But sleepiness is getting the best of us.  So we’re off to bed.  Happy New Year to all, and check back often, as I hope to write much more into these blogs in 2011.  Good night.
