09:00 AM: I’m up.   Again today, I’ll work final push on the preparations for the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   event and finish tagging the EADFF music  files and adding them to my music library.

01:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

02:10 PM: Finished with the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   project for today.  I’ve added all remaining months of Promo Only’s EA DFF music series for 2010 to the library.

03:15 PM: [Mentat] arrived.  His sister drove him here.  He’s brought some eggnog with him which, I think I’ll try, as I’ve had none yet this holiday season.

06:00 PM: [Mentat] and I had a chance to catch up while [Emmy] napped upstairs.  Things are going well for him in Ohio; aside from some settling in adjustments and compromises, over all, he’s enjoying the experience of living with his girlfriend.

06:45 PM: [Mentat], [Emmy], and I sat at the kitchen table or in the front den for the past couple hours, catching up.  We’ve decided to order a pizza for supper.

07:30 PM: We hung out at my book shelf in the front room, talking about our favorite books and how [Emmy] and I had just finished reading Frankenstein.

07:45 PM: The pizza just arrived.  So we’re digging in right now.  Yum!

08:30 PM: The pizza, topped off with a cup or two of eggnog, was quite delicious.  Now, we’re heading up to the office to sync all my music drives and to choose some tunes for tomorrow night.

11:00 PM: [Mentat] and [Emmy] picked out some songs that they’d like to hear at tomorrow’s New Year’s DJ gig, and I wrote them down.

01:00 AM: Then, we listened to some Eric Clapton songs that featured Marcy Levy (Detroit).  To this point, I’d only ever known well her background vocal work with Clapton in his hits: Lay Down Sally,   Promises,   Wonderful Tonight, and   Hello Old Friend.  But we found some lead vocals she performed with the group Shakespear’s Sister in a 1992 song called   Stay.  I’d heard this chillingly memorable piece before, but never realized that it was Levy who sang it.  Beautiful.

01:05 AM: [Mentat] also informed me that R&B vocalist   Teena Marie   passed away last week on Christmas Day.  So we read an article or two about her on the Internet and added her song   Sucker For Your Love   to the play list for tomorrow night.  She died unexpectedly and wasn’t that old either.  Sad.

01:15 AM: Bed time.  Back in less than twelve hours to write more.   Good night now.

11:00 AM: We’re up.  Again, I’ll spend most of today working the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   project.  I’ve finished converting all remaining 2010 music to MP4 format, and am now tagging all those files and adding it to my music library.

04:30 PM: Cooking supper for [Emmy]   and me.  We’re having fried squash and sloppy Joes on whole-grain buns.

06:00 PM: Mom just got home from the hospital.

07:00 PM; [Emmy]  is listening to tonight’s Penguins hockey game while I’m continuing to prepare for the    DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   project.

09:30 PM: Heard from   [Mentat].   He’s in town now, and will join us for a couple of days starting this Thursday afternoon for the New Years activities around here.  Neat!

10:00 PM: Applied the next dose of fleas medicine to the cats.  I expect that they will not need another dose this season, and the infestation has diminished greatly.  They hardly scratch at all these days and I’ve seen no fleas around where they sleep.  So perhaps we’ve turned the corner on this particular issue.  I certainly hope so.

11:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.  Skipped today’s rerun episode of   Dr. Phil

12:45 AM: Watched   Frosty The Snowman    on the DVR; one of my most treasured Christmas time rituals.

01:15 AM: Finished putting away all pending laundry and am now going to bed.  Sweet dreams, and I’ll have more to say about my own real-world experiences tomorrow.  Good night.

05:40 AM: I’m up, temporarily.   Mom requires assistance.

06:00 AM: All is taken care of, and I’m headed back to bed for a while more.

07:50 AM: I’m up.  Mom has a doctors appointment later this morning and she must get ready for her ride, to arrive shortly.

09:00 AM: Put a pork roast into the crock pot for supper tonight.  They coated this one with bacon bits and spices, and it appears to have a “tomatoy-looking” sauce.  Looks like it will be good eating tonight.  Can’t wait.

09:15 AM: Leaving now for the doctor’s office.  I’m accompanying Mom, and so, I’ll be back later.

11:45 AM: We’re back home and eating some leftover pizza from yesterday for lunch.

01:30 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

03:15 PM: We’re back up again.  Now, watching our favorite TV shows.

04:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:05 PM: Skipped today’s episode of   Dr. Phil   because we’ve seen it already.

05:30 PM: Dispensed Mom’s evening meds.   Then, we ate some of the pork roast which just finished cooking.  Very good, but we have too much left over for us.  So I’m giving it to sister Jojo for her family.  She’ll pick it up tomorrow.

08:00 PM: Sat with Mom through the early part of the evening, watching MSNBC.  Then,   [Emmy]  discovered that at Penguins hockey game is in progress.  So she went upstairs to listen to that on the Internet radio.

09:50 PM: We listened to tonight’s Penguins hockey game.  They won.

11:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   Hawaii Five-0;   a rerun but still good.

11:20 PM: Dispensed Mom’s night time meds and helped her to bed, and we’re going there as well. So good night, and I’ll say more in less than twelve hours.  Take care.

04:45 AM: I’m up.

06:05 AM: Nephew Garrett and [Mentat] arrived.  We’re leaving for Ohio now.  Back later.

09:00 AM: Crossing into Ohio now.

10:15 AM: Arrived at [Mentat's] girlfriend’s house; into which he is moving.  Wow.  I can see why she did not want to give it up and come live in this area with [Mentat].  Nice, quiet residential neighborhood, where the houses are far enough apart (perhaps 20 to 25 feet) that you don’t hear much from the neighbors.  But then, we have neighborhoods like that here as well (Tipton et al).  So I still wish she would have visited [Mentat] at least once before making up her mind.  But it is what it is.

11:00 AM: All of [Mentat's] cargo has been moved into the house; into the guest room, into what’s now become his office / den.  Not bad.

12:00 PM: We decided to eat at Steak ‘N’ Shake for lunch.  Never dined here before.  But it’s clean, bright, shiny, and spiffy.  Their portobello mushroom steak burger tastes heavenly.  Plus they serve these finely sliced French fries with it that rivaled McDonald’s fries.  Finally, to top it all off, I enjoyed a vanilla milk shake with cream and a cherry on top.  Upon entering the restaurant, I was bound and determined not to have one.  But watching [Mentat] and Garrett sucking down theirs throughout the meal, wore me down eventually.  So, I on this lapse in will, I told myself that I’d burned off about as many calories moving [Mentat] out here; which is probably true actually.   That worked, and the guilt I was feeling over being so gluttonous disapated quickly.

12:45 PM: We finished lunch and got back on the road for home.

04:55 PM: We arrived at the 17th Street Altoona U-Haul store and turned in the truck.  Garrett’s father soon arrived to drive us the rest of the way home.

05:30 PM: Talked to [Mentat's] girlfriend for a bit while nephew Garrett and his father went into Lowe’s for some duct tape.  She was overflowing with grattitude for our help getting [Mentat] moved out there, and she said, “You are SO invited back, anytime.”

05:50 PM: First expriences today: Visited the Akron, Ohio area and ate at Steak ‘N’ Shake for the first time.  I enjoyed both experiences immensely.

05:55 PM: I’m back home once again, and boy am I tired.  I’ll try and nap.  Back later.

07:15 PM: Well, I slept a little but not very well actually.  So I turned on the Penguins hockey game and listened to it for a bit.

07:30 PM: I called [Emmy] to catch the rest of the game with her.

09:45 PM: The Penguins lost again.  So far, they’ve lost all (two) of their regular season games.  Grrrrrr.

11:00 PM: Then, I journaled; recording a new audio journal episode and listening to some older ones from last year.

11:15 PM: I’m off to bed now.  Looks like another great day tomorrow is on tap for us, and I’m hoping to work in the yard, trimming bushes and trees back.  So good night.  I’m sure I’ll have more to say then.  Take care.

09:25 AM: Posted the   WPSBC Alumni Association –> Pittsburgh Day Of Giving   piece for Ellen Goldfon.

10:15 AM: Followed up with our financial planner on yesterday’s meeting.  We’re still working out ways to pay for Mom’s long-term care.  In hindsight, we should have taken out that long-term health care policy when it was offered in 2005.  Darn!  But, hindsight’s always 20 / 20.  At the time, we deemed that policy too expensive, and we weren’t sure if we’d really ever use it.  But here we are.  Oh well.

11:00 AM: FAXed the power of attorney papers to one of Mom’s business vendors so we can make choices on her behalf.  That will require fourteen business days to take effect.

12:15 PM: Finished up this week’s load of white laundry.

01:00 PM: Talked with sister Diane, who talked with someone at Blair Senior Services about the financial side of long-term, skilled care for Mom.  There’s too much information to post here now.  But I will record it in an audio journal episode and perhaps post it in detail later.  However, the gist of the conversation was that there are many options to protect Mom’s estate from total depletion, and she told me of several avenues I can travel to minimize our out-of-pocket costs. Looks like the relevant information is available online at http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/ Cool!

02:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

03:15 PM: Leaving now for [Mentat's] place.  I’m helping him repair a glider rocking chair.  It squeaks and grinds when you rock on it.  Back later.

04:30 PM: Found that [Mentat's] chair has some bad bearings (the sealed type).  However, I rotated and blew the dust out of them, and that silenced the grinding; at least for now.  Hopefully, that will last him until he can order some replacements once he gets to Ohio.

06:30 PM: We then went to U-Haul with nephew Garrett and his father to get the truck.  We got it, and a dozen blankets too, and [Mentat] has some rope and tape.  I think we’re good to go on all the moving supplies we need.

07:05 PM: I’m back home.  We’ll move [Mentat] in the coming days.

08:15 PM: Listening to the first regular season Penguins game with [Emmy], on the telephone.  They’re playing the Flyers.

10:00 PM: Well, it looked for twenty seconds near the end of the game that the Penguins would tie.  But they didn’t.  So, they lost to the Flyers.  A shame that they were beaten in the first regular season game at their new arena.  But, there’s the whole season minus one game to go.  I think if they play as they did in the pre season, they’ll do quite well overall this year.

11:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of CNN’s   AC 360   news show.

11:50 PM: Watched Letterman’s monologue, where he continued poking fun at Christine O’Donnell for her  “I’m not a witch”  ad.  That’s funny.  But, bed time now.  So good night, and I’ll have more to say tomorrow.  Later.

10:00 AM: Scheduled van ride to [Mentat's] place for later this week, where I’ll help him prepare for his upcoming move to Ohio and repair a glider rocker for him.  He has one that makes squeaking and rubbing noises.  Hopefully, it will be a simple gluing or screw-tightening job.  I’ll ready a tool box to take with me in the coming days.

03:00 PM: Recorded audio journal episode   AJE-2010-10-05-14-20

05:20 PM: I was saddened to learn that CNN’s afternoon drive news anchor, Rick Sanchez was fired over this past weekend for making offensive generalizations about Jews during a radio interview late last week. Hmmm. I’ve got to hear that interview. Was what Rick said any worse than the sort of stuff you hear on Limbaugh or O’Reilly?  Perhaps CNN is attempting to distinguish themselves by setting a higher standard than the popular crowd.  But nonetheless, I’ll miss Rick.

06:00 PM: I don’t know Jon Stewart; the commedian who news reports claim that Rick called a bigot. But still, I was curious why CNN has taken such a reactive step as to fire Rick. Perhaps they want to distinguish themselves as being a cut above organizations like Fox that tolerate, and at times, even encourage name-calling.

06:10 PM: I tried to friend Rick, but got a message saying that he already has too many friend requests. Imagine that. :-)

07:35 PM: Watched the 2010-09-22 episode of   Dr. Phil;  titled   A Brandon Intervention   on the DVR.

10:00 PM: Talked with [Emmy].  Her phone connection went down about half way into our chat.  She was unable to get a dial tone and I could not get through to her, except via her cell phone.  This is the first time in a few months that she’s experienced a phone outage.

11:00 PM: Watched CNN’s   AC 360   news show, which focused tonight on the severe problem of bullying in schools.  Good show.

11:15 PM: Heading to bed.  So good night, and I’ll peck out some more tomorrow.  Take care.

06:00 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Got maps and driving directions printed out, that show how to get to [Mentat's] new dwelling in Ohio.  Nephew Garrett and myself will help [Mentat] move next month.

10:20 AM: [Tad] called to ask if I’ve sent out the $1000 payment on behalf of the   WPSBC Alumni Association,  to repair the braille embosser at WPSBC.  I told him that I have not yet because I’ve been so busy, and I wasn’t sure to whom to send it.  He’s finding that out for me and should call back in the next few days.  Then, I filled him in about Mom and found him very sympathetic.

12:00 PM: Replaced the batteries in both Mom’s and my cell phones.  Will this lengthen the talk time between charges?  We’ll use the phones for the next couple weeks to figure this out.  In the meantime, I’m holding off on recycling the old batteries.  However, as these are lithium ion batteries, they’re probably less chargeable now that they’re nearly three years old.  Batteries of this type only perform well for just two years or so after they’re made.  So they’re probably indeed bad.  We’ll see.

12:30 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

01:15 PM: Worked the   Water Heater Replacement: 2010    project.

05:00 PM: Worked the   Gutter Maintenance: 2010   project while the weather was still nice.

06:05 PM: Sister Jojo took Mom’s borrowed books back to the library.  But I need to call the library and make sure that there are no other books out.  Trying.  It’s busy.  So I’ll keep trying.

06:30 PM: Just talked with the librarian.  All Mom’s books have been returned except for one.  It’s called   The Proposal, and it’s by Lori Wick.  I’ll see if I can find that laying around here anywhere.

06:45 PM: Talked to sisters Christine and Diane.  Mom is being moved tomorrow to a physical therapy facility, and we had to be sure everyone in the family knows about the move and agrees that it’s best.  I think we agree on that.

07:15 PM: [Mentat] called.  He’s in the midst of arranging for a U-Haul truck for the move we’ll be doing for him in October.  However, we’re faced with the problem that many of the ten foot trucks (the size that [Mentat] needs) only have two seats.  But we need three.  So in order to guarantee that we’ll get a three-seater, we need to reserve a seventeen foot truck, which is way too big.  Plus, nephew Garrett has never driven a truck that big before.  so there’s a learning curve to negotiate as well.  Our best bet is the try for the ten, and if they can’t reserve one in Tyrone, then we’ll go to Altoona to get one.

07:20 PM: I’m cooking some cat fish fillets for supper, seasoned with basil, olive oil, and garlic.  Yum!

07:45 PM: I’ve finished that wonderful fish dinner with two courses: fish and strawberries for dessert.  Delicious, like I just knew it would be.

08:20 PM: Posted the    Mom’s Status: 2010-09-21   piece.

10:00 PM: {Emmy] and I chatted on the phone and listened to the third period of the first pre season Penguins game tonight. Yep fall is here.

10:30 PM: Heard from Mom’s friend Holly.  She’s offering to take me shopping on Friday as well as to visit Mom.  Yes ma’am.  That’s sweet.

11:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

11:50 PM: Signing off for tonight.  More tomorrow.  Take care.

08:30 AM: I’m up.  Sunny this morning, again.  So I woke a little early.

09:00 AM: Working on transferring some songs from a hand full of CDs that nephew Garrett brought on Sunday, onto a “Collection” sort of CD for him.  First, I tried burning the CD in iTunes 10, and about a third the way into the operation, iTunes would crash.  Then, I got the same results when attempting to burn in Winamp on this computer.  So, I set up a laptop and attempted to burn in Winamp there.  That probably would have worked except that it would only burn at 2X as the version of Winamp on the laptop hasn’t been licensed for Pro operation, and I didn’t have my license key immediately available. So then, I tried rebooting this machine and trying it here.  It worked that time.

04:20 PM: After encountering numerous problems, Garrett’s CD has been successfully created.

05:45 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

07:00 PM: Nephew Garrett picked up the CD I prepared for him, along with his CDs that I took selected songs from for the compilation.

08:45 PM: [Mentat] called to say that he’s back home from his girl friend’s place, and we’re beginning the planning process of his move to be with her.  He’s going to move in with her in October.

09:35 PM: Watched The History Channel’s mini series:  America: The Story of Us; Part Two   on the DVR.  This one covered the early colonization of America’s west, the utilization of slavery, the cotton gin, the hardships faced by the migrant pioneers as they crossed the Rockies, the underground railroad, Fredrick Douglas, and the start of the Civil War as Abraham Lincoln became President.  Again, an excellent show, and I’m looking forward to seeing part three tomorrow.

12:00 PM: Facebooked and listened to some music.  Followed today’s primary election coverage, and it does appear that the Tea Party is diluting the Republican party.  But we won’t know for sure until November.

12:15 AM: Whipped up a batch of lime-flavored cream cheese Jello for [Emmy].

12:25 AM: I’m signing off for tonight.  Look for more dribble tomorrow.  :-)   Good night.

07:00 AM: We’re all up. [Ann] again came through all the dorm halls just now, loudly proclaiming that it’s time to get up.  This time, she had a strap of bells that she shook loudly.  I slept better overnight; despite Sasquatch’s snoring.  I really must have been tired.

07:45 AM: Now heading to breakfast with [Emmy] and [Mentat].

08:30 AM: Counting up the cash and checks we took in over the weekend.  Filled out deposit slip to be taken to the bank on Monday.

09:15 AM: We socialized a little more with friends in the WPSBC lobby, and checked our rooms for articles we might have left behind.  None found.

10:00 AM: Now, [Emmy], [Mentat], and I are heading back to [Emmy's] place.

12:00 PM: [Mentat] and I said goodbye to [Emmy] and caught a taxi to the train station.

01:00 PM: We boarded the eastbound train for Altoona and Tyrone.

03:50 PM: We reached Altoona, on time, and I said goodbye to [Mentat].  Sister Christine came by to pick me up and then, on to the hospital to visit Mom.

06:00 PM: We visited Mom for an hour or so.  She’s not doing very well today.  She has a high fever.  She appears to have contracted some sort of infection since yesterday.  She slept mostly but appeared very uncomfortable.

09:30 PM: Talked with [Emmy] for a shorter-than-usual time, as we just spent most of the weekend together and because I’m just so tired tonight.

10:00 PM: Unpacked my suitcase from this weekend and watched various shows on TV.  I’m beat; as is the usual case after a   WPSBC Alumni Association   convention.  So I’m off to bed.  Enjoy the rest of your evening, and I’ll write more tomorrow.

07:15 AM: We’re all up. [Ann] came through all the dorm halls just now, loudly proclaiming that it’s time to get up.  She’s funny. As feared, sleep was hard to catch overnight with Sasquatch in the room.  But I did manage to drift out a few times, and I did feel surprisingly refreshed.  But this was likely due more to my anticipation and excitement of the coming day of activities, than the amount of sleep I got.

07:45 AM: Now heading to breakfast with [Emmy] and [Mentat].

09:00 AM: The general business meeting begins.  The WPSBC school superintendent, Tod Reeves, spoke about the school’s mission and his vision of how the school will serve special needs children in the coming years.  He explained the renovations currently underway at the school and told us why they replaced the tiles in the old lower school building with drywall — to give it more of an at-home appearance; like a family room.

I gave my treasurer’s report, which was well-received by the crowd if I do say so myself.  They supported my recommendation to leave our investments as they are and not to move them around at this time.

The issue of how to invest our money the best way given our group’s relatively short time horizon will be revisited in 2012, and in the meantime, the board will watch our funds and, should the stock market show signs of rapid growth or shrinkage, make adjustments as needed to minimize our risks.

10:30 AM: We took a short break.

03:00 PM: Upon return to WPSBC after the walk to [Emmy's], I thought I’d take a nap to freshen up for the banquet this evening.  [Mentat] had the same idea too.  But unfortunately, so did Sasquatch.

04:00 PM: The two of us tried in vane to sleep.  But with Saquatch’s snoring, slurping, heavy breathing, and flopping around in his bed, shuteye was impossible to secure.  Even when he left for the bathroom, we still found no silence because his cell phone rang.  Grrrrrr.  So I gave up and went downstairs to walk around and see who was about.

Some of the guests took a little field trip to the new Pittsburgh casino on the north shore this afternoon.  But one guest brought some equipment specially tailored for blind and vision-impaired users.  So I checked out her display.  She showed me a talking GPS unit.  But she experienced problems during her demonstration that cast a doubtful shadow over the performance of the unit.  She also showcased an accessible digital voice recorder, which records in stereo and offers completely accessible menus.  It has 4 GB of internal memory, a USB interface, and a memory card.  It offered high fidelity sound; particularly through the powered computer speakers she brought with her. I bought nothing however; didn’t really need any of those devices.

05:15 PM: Heading back up to room #209 to get dressed for the banquet.

05:50 PM: On the way into the banquet hall, we ran into former school superintendent, Janet Simon.  She and [Mentat] talked at length.

06:00 PM: The banquet began.  Preliminary announcements made.  Ellen Goldfon MC’ed the event.  They served salad, fruit cup, steak, potatoes, coffee, and cheesecake.  WTAE TV news reporter Marcie Cipriani addressed us; talking about her typical work day, how she and her crew put a story together, what her happiest and saddest stories were, and she took many questions from the audience.  She did not however, accept our speaker’s fee; saying that this engagement was volunteer and that she was glad to help.  That was sweet of her.  The audience enjoyed her talk and I found her to be highly personable and engaging.  The program committee definitely picked a winner in this popular television personality.  Great job ladies.

We had a highly enjoyable cast of folks at our table, including [Mentat], [Emmy]. [Ron] and his girl friend, a long-time friend of the late Richard Parker, and myself.  Parker’s friend and I got to know each other.  Though I’ve seen this fellow at numerous Parker Christmas parties, I never really talked to him until now, and I’m sorry I waited so long to do so.  I enjoyed talking to him; he, a judge that Parker used to present cases to before Parker became stricken with cancer back in 2002.    This judge had high praises for Rich and reminisced about the parties and Rich’s relentless, careful, and honest work ethic.

08:30 PM: [Emmy] enjoyed the banquet as well as the rest of the weekend for that matter.  I think she’s now glad that she came. We decided to go outside with the weather so nice and to listen to the mid-summer locusts buzz.  They’ve always been very loud at the school, and hearing them brings back memories of the early days after returning from summer vacation, and swinging on the playground.  In fact, [Tad] commented on them.  Apparently, they remind hiim of summer’s end as well.  We marveled at how, when they decide to stop for the night, how they do it, all together, within ten to fifteen minutes of dark.  It takes them about that long to go from completely loud to completely quiet.  :-)

10:45 PM: Like last night, [Emmy] and I sat outside in the driveway (old playground area), and chatted with several members.  We discussed the But unlike last night, I grew tired soon after the banquet ended and now, I’m really beat.  So I’m heading to bed much earlier than last night. Hopefully, Saquatch won’t keep me awake again.  Good night.
