08:00 AM: I’m up because I must schedule some appointments and rides for Mom first thing this morning.

09:00 AM: Got Mom up and into her easy chair, and dispensed her Morning meds.

09:30 AM: All appointments and rides for Mom scheduled / rescheduled.

10:00 AM: Facebooked a little bit.  Friend count: 338.  Fan count on Facebook page: 81.

10:15 AM: Worked the   Christmas Lighting: 2010   project.  Added more lights to the indoor Christmas tree.

11:00 AM: A reported called from Altoona Mirror, wanting to do a story on our blue Christmas lights here.  Cool!

11:45 AM: Mom’s nurse visited to get some blood.

01:00 PM: Dispensed Mom’s lunch meds.

04:00 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   on the DVR.

04:15 PM: Sister Christine stopped for a visit and we chatted about the cats and their fleas for a bit.  She also said that the family is planning another progressive Christmas dinner this year; our third year in a row doing this.  Unfortunately we won’t be able to get Mom around to the various places this year given the weakened condition of her legs.  But the last stop will be here at Mom’s place.  So she won’t miss out on the entire event.

05:00 PM: I set up a little work bench in the kitchen for the photographer, like the one that I repair our Christmas lights on in the basement.  But this one is minus the mess, clutter, and irrelevant tools.  :-)

06:45 PM: We experienced a couple power outages during the past twenty minutes or so.  Fortunately, they only lasted a few minutes in total, and I was comforted, as I walked down into our basement after the lights went out, to see the warm, orange-blue glow of our natural gas heaters.  They still churned out the heat, even without electricity.  This is good because they’ll keep the house pretty warm without the primary furnace.

07:30 PM: Dispensed Mom’s evening meds.  She’s a bit cold but sleeping nonetheless.

08:00 PM: Upgraded my iPod Touch to iOS 4.2.  No problems discovered so far.

09:15 PM: Facebooked for an hour tonight.  Friend count: 339.

09:20 PM: Today’s repeater song:  Silent Night Medley   by   Hanson.  Excellent, excellent Christmas slow dance tune.

09:30 PM: Sometimes, I feel like I’m mourning Mom even though she’s still with us; like I know I’ll feel once she’s gone.  I’ve watched her health decline over the years, and am quite saddened that there can be only one ultimate outcome from it all — that we’ll eventually lose her.  On that day and during that week, in that month and in at least a years worth of days that follow her departure, I will hurt.  I so want her to enjoy her Christmas, and am thrilled that she’s residing here at home and not in some strange place where I can’t visit her but several times a week.  Thinking of her situation while listening to Christmas music on the radio gives all those old songs a new and highly special meaning.  That music makes feeling happy a little easier though the threat of Mom’s final departure looms larger and larger with each passing year.  Merry Christmas Mom.

11:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   Hawaii Five-0   with   [Emmy]   over the phone.

12:45 AM: Visited with Mom in her sitting room for an hour plus.   We both felt the need to talk and lean on each other; her with her health situation, and me with my romance-related monsters.

01:10 AM: Helped Mom to bed and dispensed her night meds.

01:30 AM: Well, time for bed again.  Man, the days just seem to fly by so fast these days.  So good night and I hope you’ll come back for more prosaic drivel tomorrow.  Take care.

08:30 AM: I’m up.

10:40 AM: iPodded to Ke$ha’s   Your Love is my Drug   repeater song.  I chuckle when recalling [Emmy's] disdain for this hit — maybe that’s why I like it so much, I don’t know.  :-)

02:15 PM: Puttered around in the front room downstairs (downstairs office), filing papers and discarding manuals and receipts for appliances which I no longer possess.  I found perhaps ten pounds of rubbish doing this.  I suppose I’ll have to go through my files at least once every five years instead of what I currently do, which is once every ten.  :-)

02:30 PM: Cheerios with sliced bananas and almond “milk.” Positively orgasmic flavor! But don’t store your Cheerios in basements for long; lest you get cereal that tastes like your cellar smells. Seriously. Yuck!

03:25 PM: I have a new all-time favorite song for the week. It’s Ke$ha’s hit  Your Love Is My Drug. Hey, this way beats out Beethoven’s   Fifth Symphony, Frampton’s   Do You Feel Like We Do, Led Zeppelin’s   Stairway to Heaven, and Charley Pride’s   Kiss An Angel Good Morning. It even surpasses Hampton the Hampster’s   Hampsterdance Song; though I had to ponder that last one for a bit to know for sure.   :-)

05:40 PM: Filed papers (receipts, manuals, information pamphlets, and so on) in the downstairs office all afternoon.  Still not done yet, but there’s only one pile of stuff left, and I’m hoping to finish that either tonight or tomorrow.

07:00 PM: I had a couple of olive oil sandwiches for supper. Take two slices of whole grain flatbread and smear about a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil all over the insides. Then, sprinkle on some fresh oregano or basil and a bit of garlic salt, and there you are. Tastes just like the dipped bread served in the finest Italian restaurants. Mmmmm mmmmm!   But it’s not very filling however. ;-)

10:00 PM: Talked with [Emmy] on the phone.  Nothing new to report.  We just help each other keep from getting too lonely.  It’s nice.

11:00 PM: Watched the 2010-08-26 and 2010-08-27 episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News   news show on the DVR.

11:50 PM: Watched tonight’s episode (the season premier) of CBS’s   60 Minutes    news show on the DVR.  They covered the mosque near ground zero.  An interesting tid bit: Muslims have already been worshipping at this site for over a year, and the developer has gotten near-unanimous approval from community leaders four times now.  It seems that republicans are campaigning against this mosque the loudest.

01:00 AM: Watched   Larry King Live   on CNN.  Tonight, King, interviewed President Jimmy Carter for the last time.

01:15 AM: Signing off for tonight.  Have a good one and I’ll be back here again later on.  Take care.

08:45 AM: I’m up.

09:00 AM: Sister Jojo just called; wanting to go shopping this morning as well as to visit Mom.   Since we need lots of groceries to restock the food supply here now that I’m back home, I eagerly agreed.

09:45 AM: Sister Jojo arrived and we left for Altoona.

12:00 PM: We left Mom and went about our   shopping trip.

02:05 PM: I’m back home now from   today’s shopping trip,  putting the groceries away.

03:20 PM: iPodded, and just walked around this house alone.  I’m already looking forward to [Emmy's] next visit.

03:30 PM: Nap time.

06:30 PM: I’m awake again.  I have a lot of blogging Facebooking to catch up on.  So I’ll work on those activities this evening.

09:00 PM:  Blogged and iPodded a bit.

10:00 PM: Sister Christine and husband Rich stopped by to chat for twenty minutes or so.  I enjoyed the company.

10:30 PM: Talked with [Emmy].  Her cold is a little better — less sniffly and more normal-sounding voice.  But she’s got a little ways to go for complete return to health.  She’s not coming tomorrow, to allow herself more time for rest.

10:35 PM: Completed   this week’s site backups.

11:55 PM: Watched the 2010-07-10, 2010-07-11, and 2010-07-13  episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News.  Bed time now.  So good night, and I’ll write more tomorrow.  Sweet dreams.

01:30 PM: Watched a bit of the news and today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless

02:30 PM: We’re back from lunch at are favorite Indian restaurant.  Now, it’s nap time.  Boy, if not for naps, I might get bored.  Naps.  What a wonderful pastime.  :-)

05:00 PM: I’m up again.

06:00 PM: Leaving to visit Mom.  Back later.

06:40 PM: Stopped in at Dunkin’ Donuts.  I can’t get enough of their hazelnut-flavored decaffeinated coffee.  I also bought a couple bottles of diet Pepsi for Mom, per her request.

08:45 PM: I’m back at [Emmy's], blogging and listening to CNN’s   Larry King Live   show in the background.

12:33 AM: Finished the    Frankenstein   book.

01:45 AM: iPodded for the past hour; listening to Internet radio and some of my favorite tunes from my own music library.  In spite of the near-perfect transmission of signals over the Internet, music still sounds better when I play it from my CD collection.  So Internet radio will not replace CDs in terms of equivalent fidelity anytime soon.  Perhaps it will once everyone has gigabyte Internet speeds available; but not today.

02:00 AM: Now heading to bed.  More tomorrow.  Take care.

06:30 AM: I’m up.

07:45 AM: Leaving now for [Emmy's] nerve test appointment and after that, to visit Mom.  Back later.

10:00 AM: [Emmy's] nerve test is done.  Now, we’re headed to Mom’s room.

10:15 AM: I’m listening to Internet radio here in Mom’s room at the hospital on my iPod Touch.  It’s cool that they offer free WiFi Internet here.  The signal is strong and the available bandwidth is quite high.

10:45 AM: Mom’s been sleeping the past half-hour.  So we’re headed to lunch at McDonald’s.

11:40 AM: We each bought two quarter-pounders at the Oakland McDonald’s.  Total cost: $16.53

01:15 PM: We’re home again.  [Emmy's] nerve tests revealed that she’s still suffering from moderate carpel tunnel in her right hand; though there was some improvement in the readings since the last time she had this test, which was just prior to her surgery in August of 2007.  Her left hand is also still showing mild carpel tunnel which is the same level of severity as before.  This is to be expected, since she’s not had her left hand treated for this yet.

01:30 PM: Nap time.  Back later.

05:00 PM: We’re back up again, and we’ll head back to the hospital in an hour.

06:30 PM: Watched some news and are now heading back to the hospital.  See you later.

09:40 PM: We’re back home.  Mom’s doing a little better this evening.

10:00 PM: Now, we’re watching   CNN’s AC 360   news show.

10:15 PM: We tried making a bag of popcorn in  [Emmy's]  new microwave oven.  We cooked it on high power for two minutes.  But it came out a little scorched.  So we’ll try a minute ad forty-five seconds the next time.  Her oven uses 1250 watts of heating power, which must be a bit stronger than the one at my place; which requires two minutes and forty-five seconds to make a bag without scorching.  Interesting how the coot times can be so variable depending on which brand and size of oven you use.  The industry might consider standardizing ovens more across brands to reduce this variability some.  But hey, I don’t mind a little trial and error with a new oven.  It’s a good thing we don’t have to buy new ones too often these days.

11:00 PM: Bed time.  We’re bushed after two walks to the hospital on this particularly warm day.  More tomorrow.

09:45 AM: I’m up.

09:55 AM: We didn’t read any of the   Frankenstein   book yesterday, as we’ve been busy with numerous activities reserved for summer — swimming, lounging on the porch, visiting friends, and so on.  But hopefully tonight, we’ll read a few chapters.

10:00 AM: iPodded and Facebooked.  Friend count: 271,  and the fans count on my official Facebook page is now 48.  Interestingly, 37 of my friends like my fan page but the total people who like it is 48. This means, that 11 strangers (people who have not yet befriended me) have discovered and decided to like the page on their own; without any solicitation from me.  So with an admittedly small voice, my writing nonetheless is starting to speak people on its own; without my help; an encouraging development to be sure.

12:25 PM: We read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

02:15 PM: Heading out for an afternoon with sister Mary Ann.  We’ll return later.

05:40 PM: We’re back home again.

07:55 PM: We read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

08:30 PM: iPodded.  Today’s repeater song: Fly by Sugar Ray.  I skated to this song my first year living in Philadelphia in 1997 and 1998, at the Palace rink and the far northeast and the Wow Family Fun Center nearby.  Wonderful fun, and great memories.  I truly miss the Palace, the boulevard, and the Wow Family Fun Center.  Every so often, I get the urge to move back.  But as a writer who is only just now beginning to bud, my finances are too constrained at present for such a big change.  So for now, I’ll just keep dreaming.  I may go back someday.  I don’t know.  While my memories of Philly are sweet, I also realize that it’s quite the dangerous place to live, as I found out from my experience of being mugged down there in 1999.  Plus, Philly did not bring the women into my life that I’ve missed for so long; though I thought when I moved there that within a year, I’d be living with my dream girl.  So if I do decide to return there, I must be sure not to do so based on delusions.  Philly can only do so much for me.  It, in and of itself, will not fill the emptiness in my heart.

10:20 PM: Watched the 2010-07-09 episode of   Dr. Phil   on the DVR, about parents losing control of their households to their children.  He and his guests also discussed how to determine what you really want to do in your life.  Their Answer: Ask yourself what you would do if you only had 24 hours to live.  If you’re honest with yourself, the answer to that question is probably what you would want to do with much of your life.

01:30 AM: We read more of the   Frankenstein   book.

01:40 AM: Bed time.  Good night.

11:52 AM: Yes, that’s true. There’s nothing more frustrating than having a discussion with someone who knows not what they know not. :-) In that situation, I don’t even bother trying to teach them; unless of course, they’re a boss or something. Then, it becomes necessary to cope with the ignorance. Grrrrrrrrr.

04:45 PM: I got notified by [a big appliance store in Philadelphia] like that once when I ordered an entertainment stand. When I got there, they told me that I’d already picked the thing up. Well, we went around and around; to the point where the sales person and I were shouting at each other. I then called their main headquarters, and they instructed the store manager where I bought the unit to give me a new one; pronto. Then, when I went back again to finally get the furniture, that manager wouldn’t even speak to me; just stuck her nose in thei air and walked away while her subordinates carried it to the car. That happened back in 2001 and I never bought anything from them again; at least, not until this past February when I purchased my iPod Touch. Still though, they lost much business from me because of that fiasco in Philly.

09:41 PM: I think that books by self-described “average-looking” guys on how to seduce beautiful women, would be more believable if those fellows would include pictures of themselves. They rarely do however. That and their misleading tactics of trickery virtually destroys their credibility. Sure, they’re fun to read. But most  offer little practical value IMHO. Hmmmm. The things people say to make a buck. :-)

06:00 PM: Facebooked for the past couple hours, and told my friends about Mom’s need to go to the hospital.  I’ve received numerous well-wishes.  That’s nice.

07:20 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   on the DVR.

07:45 PM: Watered all of Mom’s plants outside per her request while she’s away.

09:00 PM: iPodded at the pavilion for the past hour.  The new iOS 4.0 does work better.  Should play be interrupted by a weak WiFi signal, the AOL Radio app recovers now.  Before the station would stop playing, but not start again even after the signal strength rose until you pressed the play button again.  But now, it automatically restarts when I walk into a strong portion of the WiFi bubble.  Cool.  The Touch seems a bit more sluggish than before; I get some long pauses when touching the screen to switch to different stations.  But perhaps this is something they’ll work out in a maintenance release soon. I do hope so.

10:00 PM: Bought a late supper at Sheets, during    tonight’s shopping trip.

10:30 PM: Tried calling [Emmy] tonight.  But there was no answer.  She’s been getting tired earlier in the evening these days.  So she probably just went to bed.  I’ll catch her tomorrow.

10:58 PM: Watched tonight’s episode of    CNN’s AC 360   live.

11:00 PM: Looked for some older pictures that I was sure I’d stored on this computer.  But a whole folder was missing.  I checked my backups from as far back as a year ago, and apparently the folder has been gone at least that long.  So, fortunately, I was able to find many of those pics in my older email files; I’d sent them to numerous folks and saved copies of all my sent email.  Still though, I’m curious about what could have happened to that folder.  Hmmm.

01:00 AM: Facebooked a while.  Friend count is up to 215.

01:05 AM: Well, I’m going to pull out of here for the night.  Have a good one yourself, and I’ll be back out here again in under ten hours.  Good night.

01:20 PM: Since you’re not using your furnace during the summer presumably, and assuming that you have a gas furnace, your carbon monoxide levels would tend to be low anyhow. You’d get a far better idea about the contamination if you ran the test during the cooler months of the year.

06:13 PM: Have you tried adjusting the temperature in your warming refrigerator? Some refrigerators have a conduit between the refrigerator part and freezer part whose size you can adjust. Try making this opening smaller. Otherwise, a technician may be able to add more refrigerant for you if the compressor has not gone bad. But this will cost you some bucks to have the person come, and there’s no guarantee that this will fix the trouble. However twelve years is not that old for a refrigerator. So it’s hard to fathom that the compressor would be bad already.

07:00 PM:  I’m upgrading my iPod Touch now. I love software releases. They’re like getting a while new unit without having to buy a thing. :-)

08:15 PM: Testing a Facebook post from my cell phone.

09:05 PM: Just finished upgrading my iPod Touch to iOS 4.0.  Haven’t tried it out yet.  But I’m curious if the new platform will make the Internet radio apps more stable.  In the last version, these didn’t do very well in WiFi fringe areas — they’d stop playing and apparently not attempt to restart when the signal got good again.  I’ll have to take a walk to the pavilion and see if that behavior has improved any.  Plus, I’m tickled at the new multi-tasking support.  That will make it much more like a PC.  :-)   Yes!

09:15 PM: Yippe. The cell phone test worked!

10:13 PM: A freezer should be 0 degrees F. Sounds like yours is warmer than that; though it is still below freezing.  This is likely why your ice cream is soft though you still can make ice in it.
