08:00 AM: I’m up.

11:00 AM: Began the weekly system backups for all my blogs.

11:30 AM: Completed the weekly system blog backups.

11:55 AM: Posted the   Weekly Backups: 2011-07-30 piece.

12:00 PM: Spent much of the morning reading about writing scripts for the JAWS screen reading software from Freedom Scientific.  I’m doing this to help   [Emmy]  troubleshoot a problem she’s having with entering data into Winamp’s media library window.

03:00 PM: Solved [Emmy's] JAWS and Winamp problem and will post details about this presently.

05:00 PM: Talked with [Emmy], and talked her through the installation of the JAWS script for Winamp that I revised to fix her trouble.  She now reports that the difficulty has been eliminated.

07:30 PM: Leaving now for walk 37 of 100 for 2011, around the south cemetery.  Back later.

08:30 PM: I’ve returned home.  It was pleasant walking in the evening sun with temps in the upper eighties.

09:35 PM: iPodded on the east porch for an hour plus.  I just couldn’t let thie beautiful weather go yet.

10:00 PM: Watched tonight’s episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News via the DVR.

11:00 PM: Talked with   [Emmy] via the cordless phone from the first floor office.

11:55 PM: Followed the continuing debt ceiling crisis coverage on CNN for nearly an hour.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count rose some, and now stands at 1640; up from 1637 the last time I checked.  The record high for this dimension remains at 1788.  The next goal: 2000.

12:35 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

07:55 AM: I’m up.

09:35 AM: Upgraded to Winamp 5.61, and noticed definite speed improvements in Winamp’s media library searching.  Searches that used to take anywhere from 0.75 to 1.5 seconds to complete now take 0.25 to 1 second.  This should be particularly helpful on my laptops, where ML search has traditionally run slowly; particularly when I included ALL my files (including old time radio) in the index.  Terrific.

11:00 AM: Leaving now to visit Mom.  Back later.

04:00 PM: I’m back home.  Nap time.  Back later.

06:00 PM: I’m awake again.

06:05 PM: Skipped the 2011-06-06, 2011-06-07, and 2011-06-08 rerun episodes of   Dr. Phil.

06:55 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   via the DVR.

07:15 PM: Watched the 2011-06-05 episode of   NBC’s Nightly News   via the DVR.

08:45 PM: Talked with   [Emmy]   early, so I can attend nephew Grant’s graduation party.

09:20 PM: Leaving now for the graduation party.  Back later.

11:00 PM: I’m back home.  We enjoyed lots of pizza, cake, and potato chips.  Grant seemed to enjoy himself and people were playing the speech he gave at his commencement on sister Christine’s computer.  He did a swell job.

12:05 AM: Reviewed the daily traffic stats from yesterday for my blogs.  The monthly keyword hit count increased again, and now stands at 1300; up from 1284 yesterday!  Looking wonderful.  Next goal: 1500.

12:10 AM: Bed time.  More tomorrow.  Good night.

Log

10:00 AM: We’re all up.   Today, now that I’ve got all the new music I have in my music library, I’m syncing all hard drives and performing final computer tests to make sure that the   DJ Gig: 2010-12-31  gig tonight goes without any glitches.

01:00 PM: I went over to Sheetz and bought us all foot-long steak subs and hot chocolate for lunch.  We thought we’d fill up on some relatively decent food before going to the party tonight, so that we’re less apt to eat a lot of junk there.

03:30 PM: All music hard drives have now been populated with the new music except for one.  This drive, upon connection, started this rhythmic clicking noise, and my computer would not read it.  I think this Seagate unit is still under warranty.  But I’ll check on that next week.  Hopefully, they’ll send me a new one for free.

05:30 PM: We’re leaving now with nephew Grant for the New Years party.  Back later.

07:00 PM:  The    DJ Gig: 2010-12-31   gig is under way.  I experienced some Winamp Media Library configuration issues that scared me a little.  When double-clicking on single songs in the library, instead of just one song being copied to the play list editor, all the songs in the library view were copied.  This made it difficult to manage the play list and to find the song I wanted to play next, as I had to scroll through lots of “noise” songs in the play list first.  But fortunately, close examination of Winamp’s Media Library settings revealed some values that had changed when I installed the latest version of Winamp a couple days ago.  I changed these back to my preferred settings and the above problem disappeared.  *Phew!*

09:00 PM: The dance floor began to fill with mostly younger folk, but curiously, they did not request as much music this year as last.  Still though, there was plenty of dancing by all.  The adults hung out in the kitchen for the most part, and it seemed that everyone had a camera.  All my sisters stopped by the “DJ Booth” to make sure that [Emmy] and [Mentat} had plenty to eat and drink, and to chat a little.  Very nice.

10:00 PM: Noticed that music searches take noticeably longer at this gig than at previous ones; probably due to all the extra audio files I have in my collection these days.   I now have just over 92040 files, and the Winamp Media Library search engine appears to be bogging down.  Searches now take several to ten seconds to complete.  I'm used to them taking  less than a second on this computer.  Oh well, I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet in the new year and switch from Media Library over to Windows Search.  That seems much faster.  However doing this will involve writing an updated search filter DLL file that follows Windows Search communication protocols.  Unfortunately, the filter I wrote several years back for the Windows Indexing Service is not compatible with Windows Search.  The bigger my media collection becomes, the more necessary will be this effort to complete.  In the meantime however, I'll narrow the selection of watch folders I include in my Media Library index so as to exclude my old time radio shows or audio books.  I never play these at gigs anyhow, and this should shrink the number of indexed files considerably and therefore, reduce search times commensurately.   This will be especially helpful on my older and thus, slower laptop computers that I use at the gigs.

11:50 PM: I ended the formal part of the gig with a couple slow dances and finished up with Hanson's Silent Night Medley piece.  This drew many onto the dance floor that had not been there before, although I can't take all the credit for this as people had started to gather in the dance area to watch the ball fall in Times Square.

12:00 AM: 2011 is here!

12:20 AM: I began an informal music session, where I took requests from mostly the adults in the room.  These mostly consisted of classic and modern rock tunes.  No more dancing though.

01:35 AM: Mom called from the hospital to wish us all a happy new year.  She sounds better than yesterday but we still don't know much about how long they'll keep her, or if she's even going to be able to come right home after discharge.  She may have to return to the nursing facility to build back up her upper body strength.

01:45 AM: We're all running out of steam.  So I ended all music and packed up my equipment and headed to the kitchen to socialize a little and to get one last bite of holiday food.

02:15 AM: Well, the New Year celebration is over and we're back home.  Sister Christine and her husband drove the three of us  ([Mentat],  [Emmy],   and myself) back home.  I am very tired.

02:45 AM: We talked fondly of the celebration that just ended.  But sleepiness is getting the best of us.  So we’re off to bed.  Happy New Year to all, and check back often, as I hope to write much more into these blogs in 2011.  Good night.

DJ Gig: 2010-12-31

This year, as I’ve done every year since 2002-12-31, I’m DJing a New Years celebration party at Richard and Christine’s garage, in Sinking Valley.  I do not charge them, because this is my way of paying them back some, for all they do for me during the rest of the year.  Besides, it’s my way of ringing in the New Year, Hesley-style, with lots and lots of great-sounding   Tommy’s Tunes.

In this post and the attached comments, I’ll mention all that I do over the next several weeks to prepare for this gig; everything from getting the computers ready and testing the sound and lighting equipment, to assuring that my hard drive-based library contains all the latest hits I’ve purchased this year.

This will show that there’s a lot more involved with DJing a party than just sitting down, turning on the lights, and playing music when the get-together begins.  It’s not as simple as it looks.

So, enjoy.

08:00 AM: I’m up. My weight did not change from yesterday.  It’s still 173.5 Lbs.    See   here   for a summary of the progress on this goal so far in 2010.

08:05 AM: Read more of the   Classics For Pleasure    book overnight.

11:45 AM: Mom and I are spending this Easter afternoon with sister Mary Ann and her family.  We’re leaving at 12:30; Mary Ann’s sister-in-law shall drive us there.

11:55 AM: Began the book:  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

12:30 PM: Leaving now, for sister Mary Ann’s house.

07:15 PM: We’re back.  Nice day, but I am STUFFED!  They served ham, corn, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie, asparagus casserole, celery sticks with cream cheese and peanut butter, and assorted desserts.

07:30 PM: [Emmy] called to say that her first Comcast bill just arrived in email that includes her new phone service from them.  $305.00.   Surprised, and not pleasantly so, she griped about how this would set her back; a lot.  Nor did she like having to pay for 411 information calls; they were free on Verizon.  So, tomorrow, she’ll have to call and find out how to sign up for free directory assistance on Comcast, or if they even have such a no-fee service available.

07:35 PM: Nap time.

09:00 PM: I’m up again, and reading  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

09:30 PM: Calling [Emmy] back, though I probably won’t talk very long.  I’m wiped.  Must have been all that food today.  Oh well.  Time to get back on the diet tomorrow.

10:00 PM: Finished with [Emmy].  Now, reading more of   The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

11:30 PM: Recorded audio journal episode:  AJE-2010-04-04-22-45.  Talked all about Easter afternoon today at sister Mary Ann’s place; a great time we enjoyed.

12:15 AM: Repaired a few playlists that I have set up in iTunes.  I discovered upon syncing my iPod Touch to them tonight, that twenty one of the songs did not transfer because the original location of the file (where it was when the playlist was created) has changed.  This often happens as my music collection grows, and I subsequently decide to move things around on my music drive to keep it simple to maneuver.  Plus, over time, better ways to organize all these audio recordings emerged.  But unfortunately, anytime I change file locations, I must update any playlists I have that reference those files.  It’d sure be nice if iTunes, Winamp, et al, could detect these changes and update the links in any referencing playlists automatically. But they cannot at present.  So I’m resigned to working through the tedious and painstaking processing of periodically fixing any broken links in these lists.  *sigh*   Life could be so much worse.  :-)

01:05 AM: Well, so ends another day.  Good night, sleep right, and I’ll see you back here again tomorrow.

01:30 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless.

03:00 PM: Nap time.

04:05 PM: I’m up again.

05:45 PM: [Emmy]   and I just got back from Pizza Pronto.  Yum.

07:30 PM: Watched today’s episodes of   NBC’s Nightly News  and  The CBS Evening News.  This is a real change because I’m not used to watching live TV; usually, I catch these shows on the DVR, where I can skip the commercials.  :-)

07:45 PM: Upgraded   [Emmy]‘s  Wimamp to 5.572.

10:00 PM: Resolved [Emmy]‘s iPod syncronization lockup problem.  See details   here.

12;00 AM: Fixed 32 broken links in the playlists that   [Emmy]   syncs to her iPod.  The links broke because I made changes to the paths of various music on my library drive to promote easier finding and overall better organization.  However, any playlists that reference the changed music must be updated to account for the location changes.  This is what I did tonight.

12:15 AM: Time for bed.  I’m sleeping on the floor tonight, as   [Emmy]  has but one twin-sized bed; she’s sleeping on that.  So good night, and I’ll be back out here later on; probably in the morning, while   [Emmy]  is watching the   Pittsburgh Today Live   TV show between 9:00 and 10:00 AM.  Take care.

05:00 PM: Worked the   Christmas Lighting, 2009   project.  Took down some more lights.

06:00 PM: Disabled the automatic saving of post revisions on all my blogs.  Installing new versions of WordPress always re activates this feature, which I wish not to use at this time.  So, each time I upgrade WordPress, I must run through the blogs, turning it off again.  I wish WordPress would provide an option for toggling this on and off in the admin pages.

07:30 PM: Played with this IRIS Internet WebRadio some more and posted more information about it on this blog.

08:15 PM: Watched today’s episode of   The Young and the Restless   from the DVR.

10:00 PM: Hung out with   [Emmy]   on the phone, listening to the Penguins game; they lost to the Washington Capitals.

11:20 PM: Created audio journal episode:   AJE-2010-01-21-23-14   on the Victor Reader Stream; the topic of this episode is [Linda] and how she no longer does foot sessions at the parties.  Hmmm.  I wonder if I had something to do with that?  :-)

11:30 PM: Pulled out my newest laptop and installed Winamp 5.572 on it.  It’s indexing my music library now, on one of the new hard drives.

12:00 AM: The indexing finished just now.  So I can use Winamp’s media library to search my collection.  It sure is fast on that laptop.

12:50 AM: Well, I’m finished with another day.  Man, the days go by fast these days.  Anyway, good night all.  See you here again later.

Upgraded to Winamp 5.57

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The latest version (5.57) of Winamp became available sometime today.  I just downloaded and applied the music player software to this computer.  Hopefully, this new version will not introduce any problems with the rest of the importations I have to finish for the   DJ Gig: 2009-12-31   project.  I’ve rarely experienced any troubles with Winamp upgrades.  So I’m confident that this one will go as smoothly as the rest I’ve done since 2002.  I’ll play with it here for a week or so before applying it to my laptop DJ computers.

Right off the bat, I’ve noticed the following changes / improvements:

  • Searches in the media library run much faster.  What used to take three to five seconds to finish, now consistently completes in around one-half of a second.   I’m quite eager to try 5.57 on my Dell Inspiron laptop, on which media library searches have traditionally taken upwards of thirty seconds to finish.
  • The rescanning feature of the media library happens more quickly.  The first part of the rescan operation, which involved much disk activity in prior versions, appears to have been streamlined in the latest version; much less disk access was noted.

Problems either still persisting, or discovered fo the first time in this, latest Winamp release are:

  • Winamp still won’t play Promo Only’s Express Audio DFF files (m4a files).
  • Winamp still does not play ANR Wideband Audio files (3gp) that one creates with the Victor Reader Stream device.
  • Winamp appears to leave the current audio file you’re playing open, even when you pause or stop it.  Apparently, it does not close the file until either you exit Winamp entirely, or play another file.  Normally, this would not be an issue.  However, when you use the View File Info window to edit its tags, Winamp appears to open the file for exclusive access, and keeps it open in that mode until you move to another file.  This causes some of my batch processes to fail that I run immediately after editing a file in Winamp.

Winamp Skips EA-DFF Files

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

The M4A audio files currently appearing on Promo Only’s   Express Audio Digital File Format   (EA-DFF) discs,  do not play in Winamp 5.56.  This is inconvenient, as I prefer Winamp when DJing over the numerous other players out there.

However, it’s still possible to use Winamp with these files.  To do that, you must first convert them (using QuickTime et al), to a format that Winamp understands (mp4, wav, Etc.).    In fact, I was able to convert an original m4a file to mp4 or wav, and both of these played in Winamp without problems.

But, getting the music data converted is not the only hurdle to cross.  In fact, the original files have tags that contain the album name, year, beats per minute, artist, and song title.  But unfortunately, these data are lost during conversion.

This isn’t a terribly big deal because I’ve written some PERL scripts that put some of the data into the tags, including the BPM field if desired.  However, beats-per-minute fis not displayed on the card inserts that come with these CD ROMs, though it does appear in the original file tags.  This means that you must look at the original tags in some sort of editor to get it, or go to Promo Only’s web site.  Doable, for sure, but this is a pain.

Yet, however you getthe data in the first place, whatever information you wish carry forward from the originalM4A tags to the output of the conversion, must be applied to the converted files manually.  Or, software must be written to do this.  I’ll go with the manual route for now, though I may write programs at some point if I grow tired of hand-copying the data.  Shouldn’t be too hard to write, as the M4A files provided in the EA-DFF subscription, appear to have tag (box) structures similar to the mp4 files I already have in my library. Since I already have a library of PERL functions to handle these files, adaption to Promo Only’s M4A file should be pretty easy.  Famous last words, ‘eh?   :-)

I mentioned this to the   Promo Only   staff this afternoon.  They were not aware of it, and weren’t sure what they could do to fix it.  But maybe they’ll be motivated to look into it, as many DJs rely on Winamp to play their music in the field.  At least now, they know about this issue.
